I saw this in the US shortly after it came out. I think it was 1968. I thought it was terrific. A friend of mine had to figure out the ending for a while. One of the most memorable films I've ever seen. In the 50 years since, there haven't been many as good.
It truly is an exquisite film, one which lingers in the mind long after it's ended. Tragically, Pia Degermark ( Elvira) whose life seemed so full of promise- it was thought that she would marry the Crown Prince of Sweden - descended into crime, drug addiction, homelessness and anorexia, and social services took her child from her.
Based on a true story that occurred in Denmark 🇩🇰 in July 1889 involving two runaway lovers from Sweden 🇸🇪 who succumbed in a forest because their romantic dream was thwarted by the cruel fates of a forlorn world. Very similar to the Mayerling incident 💔 that occurred in Austria 🇦🇹 on 30th January 1889 that involved Crown Prince Rudolf and his mistress Mary Vetsera 💔🇦🇹💔🇸🇪💔🇩🇰💔

A true happening. A seduction , a grooming, a mur,der and a suicide by a degenerate,.who was already married and took advantage of an innocent girl.
