The Seiko SSC813 Speedtimer After the Hype: Is It Still Worth $675? One Week Review

  • When the Seiko SSC813 SBDL085 Speedtimer was released, I instantly knew that it was going to be a big hit. Anything reminiscent of the almighty Rolex Daytona (especially the ceramic ones) is pretty much guaranteed to do well. I was right because the panda dial variant with the black bezel, which has since been nicknamed the “Seitona,” is still sold out on every site and AD, which adds to the Daytona experience.
    In this video, I take a look at the SSC813 to see whether its worth its $675 price tag now that the hype has started to calm down slightly. I wasn’t so sure of it when I first got it, but after spending some time with it, I’m liking it more and more.
    Alongside the panda dial SSC813 (SBDL085) Seiko also released a blue dial variant SSC815 (SBDL087), a yellow dial SSC817 (SBDL089), and a cool looking black dial variant SSC819 (SBDL091). These versions look pretty cool and I would love to check one of these out at some point, especially the black dial variant which very vaguely reminds me of my Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch. Let me know what you think of these new releases!

    My entire collection is just Orient, Seiko and a beater G-Shock. Couldn’t be happier as I have bought them to celebrate personal victories. E.g I bough this watch after I quit smoking and did not smoke for 6 months. Every time I look at this watch, I am reminded that things that I once felt almost impossible are possible and much easier than I had thought.

    Love the piece - honestly minus the bracelet I think it’s great. I do wish the crowns were screwdown like their old flightmaster model and had a ceramic bezel but it’s a minor thing. The thing I love most about this variant is how versatile it is with straps - this thing is a strap beast. Any colour works.

    Great video! I really appreciate “post-hype” reviews like this one, as they present a more realistic perspective on the watch, rather than the initial gushing reviews everyone puts out. Really informative and got me thinking.
    Despite the flaws, I’ve just ordered the black dial version (SSC819P) and am eagerly awaiting its arrival. At $615AUD ($400USD) from a local AD, I can live with the drawbacks.

    I've had my Seiko SBDL085 (which is the JDM SSC813) for almost a year and I just don't get the hate for the bracelet. It's comfortable, it fits me well, it looks good, and it's secure. Other than that, I love the watch and it's my only daily driver. The accuracy is +5 seconds a month, which is pretty awesome. It looks good on anything I wear, in summer or winter, and I can easily tell the time at a glance.The panda dial is really the best variant of all, it has a very classic Seiko look to it.

      @@AAH909I’m not sure it’s too expensive just because it’s quartz. There is no any similar chronograph with mechanical movement at this price range. On the other hand it is too pricey in comparison with some similar quartz chronographs. Fx Bulova Lunar pilot is better in any aspect other than solar charging. Even the bracelet is better on Bulova plus you get leather strap as addition. Only downside of Bulova is size ( too big for smaller wrists). But i still think this seiko is wonderful and pretty.

    I just ordered the blue dial version, mainly to sit in my watch box next to the one that inspired it; a 1969 Seiko 6139-6000 “Cevert” Speedtimer.
    I’ve loved chronographs since I was a child, and currently (including this order) own five. I don’t wear chronographs often, and hardly ever during the week, but this definitely fits a “sporty, water-resistant casual quartz” sized hole in my collection. My only other quartz watch is a 36mm Cartier Ronde that is extremely dressy, and was my only option when I wanted to wear something without having to set it before leaving the house.

    Do you own an SPB143? I'm curious if the 143 bracelet will fit on this. Strapcode does make a 143 bracelet, but unfortunately it doesn't integrate any better than the OEM bracelet. I personally feel an H-link bracelet would have looked perfect with this and the 143, but alas what can we expect from Seiko. What's even crazier is the SLA017 JDM version comes with the exact same bracelet as the 143 and this Speedtimer by the looks of it.

    I have an older Seiko SSB045P1 chrono with the meca quartz 6T63 movement that I've always liked due to its mechanical chronograph and general resemblance to the Omega Speedmaster and to a lesser extent, the Rolex Daytona (although it is very close to the black dial pre-Daytona ref 6238 with the tachymeter under the crystal). Indeed, having the tachymeter under the crystal keeps it safe from damage. I love the look of the panda dial face on the SSC813, but am surprised at the price tag relative to current SSB series watches with the 8T63 movement (SSB345, SSB397, etc.). The SSC813 loses the meca's mechanical chrono feel, and gains a sapphire crystal and solar power (with the same useless 24hr time dial)... but at *triple* the street price? Maybe I'm cheap, but that price just seems steep when you can get an homage watch (Dan Henry 1964, etc) with a Seiko movement for less than half the price.

      Its a watch designed for motorsport. Sure most people wont use the 24 hour sub dial. Its there for 24 hour races. 24 hour daytona. 24 hour of lemans. 24 hour of nurburgring. The fact it only loses .5 seconds a day means the hands will still read true at 24 hours. Even a real rolex daytona is rated to 2 seconds a day. It needs to be set every 8 hours to make sure no time is lost.

    • @chriskilner4110

    A great review TWI. I really like the aesthetic of this watch and I'm more than OK with it being quartz. Like you though I think the Seiko designer who did the lume may not have been performing at their best on that day. Case proportions look good and as you say the spacing of the pushers is good. Areas that don't quite fit well with me would be that bezel. I'm OK with the tachymeter scale but being that shape in in black and made of steel it is very exposed to scratching so may not age well. A slightly protected steel insert in a stainless bezel may have worked better. One other slight gripe is the date wheel is quite deep set but this tends to be common with some solar watches of this type including Citizen who arguably are best experienced in these movements. Before I would hand over any hard earned cash I would consider Citizen (I have a few that are several years old now) and if you want more complications I'd also suggest taking a look at some of the solar analog G-Shock models. Still a great review and a great classic looking watch TWI.

    • @thewatchidiot
      @thewatchidiot  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks Anthony! Yeah the overall design is great but the lume is definitely a head scratcher! I think I'm in the same boat as you I think I would have preferred it if it had a plain steel bezel or one with the tachymeter etched in. Of course that would end up being a very different watch lol!
      Yeah I would have added the deep date as a negative but stragely enough it didnt bother me as much as I would hev expected it too! maybe my mind see its as "extra depth to the dial" lol. Yeah the analog gshocks have interested me for a while but I have no idea which one to look at first! do you have a recommendation?

    • @anthonystevens8683
      @anthonystevens8683 Před 2 lety

      @@thewatchidiot I have a couple of metal analog solar G-Shocks from some years ago, versions of both are still available I think. A China built (I have no issues with this) GST-B1000 on the bracelet with red accents and a Japan made MTG-B1000 on bracelet with blue accents. They are both have a decent light (for an analog), stop watch, count down timer and alarm, not an LCD to be seen anywhere. Even a dual time. They also have AM/PM indication in a kind of heavily shrunken blink and you'll miss it 24 hour sub dial. For the dual time, time swap and countdown setting it's easiest done when connecting via Bluetooth to the phone app but can be don without. Both of them wouldn't look out of place in a terminator or steam punk movie. The biggest difference between the two apart from the functions is that the MTG has a sapphire crystal, an extra button and multi band 6 and arguably slightly better build. Full G-Shock compliance as well.

    • @anthonystevens8683
      @anthonystevens8683 Před 2 lety

      Oh I forgot to say that neither of the above get that much wrist time these days (COVID and working from home etc) as I tend to gravitate towards the square's. One I forgot to mention if you are on a totally mad hike would be the non Bluetooth solar GWG-1000 ana-digi (this does get more wrist time). It's totally bonkers but will likely outlive me. Big, yes but with a compass, altimeter, barometer, thermometer sensors and multi band 6 it does almost everything apart from make the tea. Other usual stopwatch, countdown, alarms, world time....... I'm not sure if it's still available now but it's full metal and very robust and for the size is very comfortable.

      @@anthonystevens8683 I tried this watch on last week and I'm on the fence. I kinda like it but.....
      I hate the date window squashed in between those indices. Looks terrible and wish they'd left the date window off.
      I dislike the X logo at 12, but wouldn't be a deal breaker. I dislike the male endlinks and prefer female ones. And only two micro adjustment holes isn't great either.
      The date window might actually be the deal breaker for this watch for myself.
      Oh,,, and the bracelet isn't the best. You can't see it on reviews but once you get the watch in hand the bracelet feels weird. Like too light and cheap. It's hard to explain but feels almost like the watch is made from steel but bracelet from rattly aluminium, if you can imagine that feel. I've had cheaper Seikos like the sarbs with better feeling/quality bracelets.
      A few little changes and this watch could have been an absolute smash hit.
      I bought a Captain Willard yesterday and a Lorier Gemini last week so not making a purchase for a little while so plenty of time to change my mind or whatever.

      @@frankdux5693 I agree I'm not a fan of a date at 4:25 - 4:30. A day date I 'm OK at the three position or if the date window is inside the hour marker but if it's a date only I'd prefer it at the 6 o'clock position. I'm not a fan of the Seiko bracelets either, from my series 5 watches experience they felt and sounded cheap, I'd swap them out for something else as TWI has done. Congrats on the Captain WIllard and the Lorier. I'm not on the fence, it looks good but there are other watches that would be on my list so this model is not on my want to purchase list yet. I'd still like to see one in the flesh though.

    We have really similar taste in watches! 🙌 My grail is the Tudor BB58 Silver, but it's going to take some years till I be able to buy it. I want to wear a good watch till then for around 1000-1500$. I just want something sporty and versatile / also to be strap friendly. Some of the watches that I have in mind are this Seikona, also the SNE Solar Diver, the Dress KX in grey, the Longines Hydroconques in grey, the Oris 65 and a Sinn. Which one would you recommend me till I'm saving for the Tudor? Thank you so much and keep the great job. Loving the videos.

    • @thewatchidiot
      @thewatchidiot  Před 2 lety +2

      Yeah we really do have similar taste because i love every watch that you're deciding between! Whichever watch you get, you'll be getting a special watch of course I am very biased towards the SNE solar diver bc it was my most worn watch of 2021 and my watch of the year lol!
      Like P C said, the Oris Divers 65 is a great watch that offers big time quality and versatility however if you really do love the BB58 Silver and you are set on getting one at some point after saving up then I would stick to that goal. If you take a look around you can find SNE solar divers for less than 400 if you get them from japan so that could be a great watch to own while you're saving up the the BB58 Silver. And once you get the BB58 then it will still have its place in your collection because its always great to have a watch you dont have to worry about especially if its quartz! Let me know what you think when you decide!!

I did not purchase it… I’m a Seiko fan, But not a ‘fan boy’… I believe it’s priced at least $150 over what it should be, but that’s par for the course for Seiko nowadays. It’s no secret that over the last couple of years they have raise their prices considerably and In my opinion haven’t added better specifications/quality to the product. Or at least not enough to justify the 30 to 50% increases in price… Thanks for the great review.
