- "In 1974 I was the world's foremost female playing card manipulator. By default, actually. There was no other woman doing it at the time that I knew of. I'm talking about card fans and other various flourishes. I did a sketch with Johnny Carson (his character "El Mouldo,") and he brought me out to be on the panel right after it. This is a clip from that panel appearance."

Hundreds of people in the audience, countless thousands watching at home... and Johnny talks to her like they're the only two people in the room. THIS is why he always will be the greatest. AND, it REALLY allows me, as a viewer, to focus on his guest and her talents. Thank you so much to the both of you for this!
Johnny made it look easy. However, he did much show prep and did not like to appear with scripted personalities. He only appeared to be extemporaneously funny.
Ditto !!!....He was a truly great person ,so talented , and generous . ( 2 ...and the Newman sisters too )....
I just found you today. Musician, comedian, card manipulator, what a gal!
I know, right?! What a catch!
@@harbourdogNL -- Thanks!
There's a wonderful moment when Tracy cuts the cards and you can hear in Johnny's voice how impressed he is, and Tracy hears it and knows shes talking to someone who shares her fascination and she smiles.... A lovely little moment of shared pleasure. Love it.
Tracy you are truly a Renaissance woman ... you've done it all and continue to do it still ...kudos to you !!!
AMAZING skills! Found THIS interview AFTER watching the Cripple Creek performance. Mesmerizing, decades later. Thanks
Wow me too!
And me, too!
Same here!
Johnny Carson - the classiest host on late night TV. How I miss him!
When 'late-night' was almost always a great night.
And Johnny was the only game...er, talk in town at that hour.
Leno was pretty good, but no one measures up to Johnny. And today.....well, if you can't say something nice........
Johnny really liked you, its obvious. Man he was the and still is the best host ever. Thanks for posting this.
I'm such a fan of yours. After discovering your 1965 PBS "What's New" songs about a year ago, I was very quick to subscribe. I love all of those songs dearly. The internet is blessed to have them. Thanks for showing us this too!
What a life you've had! The cute little beatnik gal with her own folk music show, then a decade later a card trickster on the Tonight Show :D
Amazing and talented woman! I was checking out your musical videos, well sung and played. Then I find out your're also pro at cards, wow!
I'm a fan of that girl. She's got poise and charisma and smarts too!
When she was young, she was just 'STUNNING', IMO... Not only, that- her personality was just PHENOMINAL-!!!!!!!! 😁😍👍✌🤣
Johnny was reallly an amazing guy. And Tracy, what can I say! Loved this, thank you for this upload.
When late night TV was worth staying up for...
This is so lovely and natural comedy. Enjoyed the card shuffles. And humour:) Tracy, "I write songs sing and playing guitar" Johnny, "While doing this"
Wow! Life sure has taken you in some awesome places!
I remember watching you play "Cripple Creek" when I was nine in 1965.
Wow! I don't get many comments from people who actually watched "What's New" back then! Thank you for writing.
@@tracynewman3256: I just learned of you today and saw you play that song on the banjo today - great video! Enjoyed the card tricks too - thanks!
Your banjo style is magical, I saw that clip too. Thanks!
@@christopherbarnett5554 Thanks, Christopher!
@@janishart5128 !a!!
Johnny I just choked on my ice tea LMAO 🤣 😂 😊😅
That's really awesome and impressive! Thanks for sharing.
A woman of many flourishes. Wow
That was friggin' awesome!!
Darn! I only knew you as a fabulous string player. It’s like a superhero alterego.
Johnny is clearly having a good time on this segment.
Because he truly respected what she did. And maybe envied her talent?
So cool Tracy. Thanks !
Thank you.
"When I started I practiced 6hours a day"
Totally relatable
Great comment!
Hope you meant it the way I took it. ;-)
That's you? Wow! You made me happy!
Iirc, 8 minutes was quite a long time for Johnny to have someone on. He was enjoying talking with you.
Carson loved magic and card tricks.
Great that she mentioned Ricky Jay and The Magic Castle ( The Academy of Magical Arts) and I understand the time it takes to learn a one hand shuffle.
Such a smart, beautiful and talented woman.
I hope you continue to be blessed in all your endeavors.
Love it!!!
That, is SO cool!
After hearing you on the Carson Podcast recently, I found you here. Very interesting.
You are an inspiration for me to learn the Banjo....Thx...
I found this quote in a post elsewhere: "By the time I did Cripple Creek, I had no idea whether I would "nail it" or not. This was the only song I knew how to play on the banjo. My teacher was banjo virtuoso, Doug Dillard. I only learned the song to audition for The Andy Griffith Show, (which I didn't get.) "
So, probably many hours a day of practice to only do one song, and that, taught by a virtuoso. Good luck Dave!
Me, I can't carry a tune in a bucket.
That was fun
She is SO FREAKIN' AWESOME, IMO... I wish I could have met and knew her when we both were young-!!! Just MY KIND OF GAL... She is BEAUTIFUL, TALENTED, CHARMING, FUNNY AND SO OPTIMISTIC SEEMING (AND, HUMBLE)-!!!?? Need I say, MORE-??? 🤔😆😍✌
Tracy is so darn cute🙂
The one person that didnt like this vid got whipped by Tracey in Go Fish!🤣
looked you up after hearing Larraine on Marc Maron, loved the early folk music
She’s great on the banjo, too.
Good looking and talented. SO few of us.
Very cool indeed.
What a beautiful woman.
Awesome
Damn! She can shut your mouth with her beauty, music or flourishes (cardistry).
SNL's Larriane's sister...What a Babe she was...is....
Her sister is Laraine Newman. Very accomplished musician and tv producer.
Wow to have met Burt Reynolds and Johnny Carson. I do so hope to meet you. M-9348
Michael Rovno met his hand in the bathroom.
Love her hair
This chick is awesome.
And a great banjo player, but most of all a sweet personality.
I wish these late night talk shows would go back to bringing "non-stars" from the general population on the show.
Interesting piece of cardistry history here! What are your thoughts on the current cardistry community?
I'm not really involved in it anymore. There's are soo many sensational card manipulators out there today and it's fun to watch, but I can't really do it that well anymore. I guess can still make a mean fan, though!
Salute to Ricky Jay! RIP.
Johnny should've married Tracy. They looked good together... natural, organic.
LOL. Thanks!

I don't understand why others in the comment section cannot see what is so obvious. Many fledgling stars would sell their soul to get called over after their act, but with you... he was falling over himself to compliment and showcase your talent and personality. In all the Johnny Carson interviews I've seen, I've never seen him act like a bumbling schoolboy in awe of a girl like in this video.
@@20alphabet I was there with my boyfriend, so I don't really know what might have happened. I found him to be very charming (duh) and interested, as you can see. He was 17 years older than me at the time. And married, so...
@@tracynewman3256
Lol, your boyfriend had to be (A) floating on cloud 9 at the attention lavished on his girlfriend by the biggest name in showbiz, or (B) feeling as secure as a man in quicksand. Thank you very much for sharing that.
Still alive in 4/22.
Talented and pretty lady.
What a cutie.
the johny moment ..he really likes her
So this is the banjo lady from a different video?? Oh, it's SNL's Laraine Newman's big sister.
I wondered if there was a connection. Something about her voice reminds me of Loraine Newman.
LoL
damn tracy. i just saw your "banjo" video and here you are doing card tricks on carson. talk about multi-tasking.. i see now, these aren't tricks but actual card manipulations. interesting. can you still do this?
I can still do a good fan and some of the other moves. If I practiced for a month, yes.
She looks a fair bit like someone I used to play trivia with. Her mannerisms are really similar too. I could almost swear she's the same person I'm picturing.
Don't you love people like Mike Poitras who incorporates his bullshit life and steals some ones thunder.
@@frankwallace5934 My ''bullshit life?'' Who's ''thunder'' am I stealing? Is she your sister? Did you grow up with Johnny Carson? The bullshit is coming from you. I was simply making an OBSERVATION. For fuck's sake, get some help! Lighten up!
I just found out about Tracy Newman and now I'm convinced she's secretly my mom. I too play banjo and mess around with playing cards.
She's so cute.
Is this the same lady that plays a banjo?
Yep.
@@tracynewman3256 Awesome my hat off to you. You are very talented. Love your music and your card tricks..!!!
I want to see Tracy play music
Is there no end to your talent???
Great time capsule of cartistry. Not taking away from Tracy, but if you seek out current performers well….there’s little comparison. Things have progressed so much that the Tonight Show performance looks quaint.
How did anyone ever watch this show? The women's boobs weren't even hanging out. They didn't even have micro minis on. Their eye makeup didn't look like tarantulas. She wasn't even telling risque stories. Guess they didn't have anything better on. Good thing we've evolved from these primitive times.
Tracy, I know you still sing and play on CZcams. How about showing your card manipulations nowadays? After all, you've had 46 more years of practice.
I'd have to practice for many months to get my manipulations back to anywhere near what I'm doing here. Thanks for watching!
@@tracynewman3256 really you?! I just listened to the first thirty minutes of your podcast with Mark! Very enjoyable! Magician became your boyfriend. 🙂
@@jeffzest8393 Mark who? I do a lot of podcasts these days.
She also appeared in an El Mouldo sketch.

@ the 0:40 mark
Must be the same night as this clip. She's wearing the same clothes.
Neither one playing with a full deck? 😊
She’s totally hot !
Yowza! Is there anything this woman can't do?
Queen of Cardistry
Carson looks like a younger James Hetfield……
if only more women were like her...
Free the breakfast
She play a banjo and now a boring card shuffle , Not impressed. How did she make it onto the Tonite Show ?
Interesting that Johnny mentions Bob Hope and his mother in this segment. Both people he hated with a passion.
