  • To raise money for Rethink Mental Illness, I cycled 1150km in 7 days whilst working full time because in the UK according to the office of national statistics 150 people a week die due to suicide. It was so lovely to have friends with me on this ride.

    The monsters and demons we "create" in our own minds are infinitely worse than reality. The avoidance of dealing with problems almost always makes them worse. There are alot of different supports groups avialable, don't be afraid to try more than one to find the one that resonates with you.

    Yippee, you made it! I’m Knick Knacked just watching your videos for the last week. I’m so proud of what you are doing and the message you are promoting. In 2020, during the COVID lockdown, I was 55 and had developed an upper respiratory condition that made me highly susceptible to Covid. I was also obese at 260lbs with several other co-morbidity factors. My high school aged daughters couldn’t understand the restrictions I imposed on them due to my health issues. I could not stop thinking about dying in a hospital hooked up to a respirator and all alone. Every exposure I had started a countdown clock in my head waiting for the symptoms to start and I usually had multiple going at the same time. The pressure was intense and unbearable. I also couldn’t stop doom scrolling the internet and the social divide over social distancing and masking made me feel that nobody really cared. Ultimately, I figured that if I was going to die anyway, I might as well choose to go out on my own terms so I started planning how best to take my own life. It had to appear to be an accident to lessen the impact on my family but I figured the life insurance would actually be better for them than I could ever be. This decision seemed so rational at the time and actually raised my spirits after making the decision. I enjoyed my family for a bit for the last time before implementing my plan. I felt good and more content than I had in a long time. I failed and got the help I needed. I look back at those decisions and wonder how my normally logical mind could make those choices. It’s really scary to think like that. I’m not proud but I think it’s important to be honest. I couldn’t be at first.
    Shortly afterwards, a friend asked if I had a mountain bike and wanted to ride some trails. I had an old bike that I hadn’t ridden in over 20 years. I loved riding the trails and it made me feel like I was 13 years old again. I loved it!
    I began to realize that it had been a long time since I had been happy. I was in a job I was no longer satisfied with, my marriage had deteriorated over the years and I no longer was present in my own life.
    I decided to do something about it. Over the next year, I lost 90lbs and started running. I ran a 5K, 10K and half marathon. Since, I’ve run a marathon and a 70.3 Ironman. I took a promotion, moved and changed my relationship. I’m more present in my day to day life, I have more energy both physically and mentally. It’s hard at times, but I keep moving forward and making progress. Exercise is my daily practice just for me and keeps me grounded and feeling good. It also helps me to be more mentally focused.
    At first, I felt like a failure. Previously, I looked down on those people who were struggling with mental health issues and was probably deflecting from my own issues. I’m trying to embrace all my experiences now and being honest with those around me and mostly myself. It is so good to see someone as open and honest as you are about this issue. Most of all, you are trying to do something about it. Congratulations and keep up the great job!
    Tomorrow is another day so let’s do everything we can to make it a good one.
    Thanks for letting me share. TTFN, good day!

      Well done John, that's an absolute fairy tale of a story about how you turned your life around 👏👏👏👍, and thanks for being so honest about it.
      I'm having massive issues that make me not want to be here, and the 'accidental death' thing resonates loudly with me too because of my son's feelings. It's why I'm still here actually.
      I appreciate your struggle, I'm pedalling my way through mine right now and it's working so far.
      All the best and keep going mate 🙏🚴‍♂️👍

      @johnrwilker Před 10 měsíci +1

      Tony, if I can do it anyone can. I’m pulling for you and anyone else dealing with this “life”. Take it one day at a time. Some days are better than others, but I’ve tried to build in small habits and routines to get me through the bad days. On days I don’t feel like exercising, I have no excuses because I have everything ready and laid out so there really is no excuses. Once I start, things become automatic and I always feel better afterwards. Take care and Ride On! 👍

      Yes, once I'm actually out and pedalling (or paddling) I cheer up very quickly. Even with all of my kit laid out the night before, I find that I'm procrastinating and it often takes between 3 and 5 hours after waking up before I get out. I desperately need to figure out this issue.
      Cheers 👍

    The most important first thing to do when you’re feeling depressed to the point of wanting to harm yourself is tell someone. Preferably someone that can help you or steer you toward someone that can help you. People that are in that condition can commit suicide without anyone else being aware of how dyer their situation is. Sometimes the signs are subtle or sometimes people are just good at hiding it, because of the stigma that goes with mental healthcare. People will try to avoid getting the help they need. If you have someone close don’t be afraid to ask them if they’re struggling in a way that lets them know that you care and support them fully. Most of the time they will let it out which may call for a large box of tissue. With this the road to recovery is started. I’m happy you’re riding your bike. It’s helped be to cope with stressful periods of my life. Prolonged stress without coping mechanisms often leads to depression and anxiety.

    Crazy! Great effort that took guts and commitment to complete. As for your question, my advice for somebody struggling with their mental health is to talk to somebody. Share how you're feeling. Once someone knows how you feel, then you have taken the first step and that is always the hardest, but it also means that you've taken that first step to get help. And people will help.
