  • We start with a quick look at the new STEC 3100 front display, and explore the responsiveness and some features of the Aspen Max, recently updated in my panel. Further testing of the 3100 was stopped by lower clouds to the west. There was time for 3 touch and goes. Hope you enjoy it!

    Great video, Keith. I like the way you explain everything you are doing with your avionics as well as the basic aircraft controls.
    And I really missed getting together with you and everyone else this year at Winter Haven.
    Hoping the stay at home orders are rescinded in time for Oshkosh.

    I love my 1000 Pro Max! Great video. I’ll be glad to get my plane flying again. Still chasing a fuel leak in the left tank.

      I had the MFD1000 for several years, added the AOA and SV features during a sale at Oshkosh some years ago. So this was a trade-in upgrade when they were offering the special a year ago at Sun 'n Fun. The change was not as dramatic as I might hope, but it will keep me on current hardware, extends my warranty and will enable the STEC 3100 remote control function if and when Aspen ever completes it. So far they are only a couple of years late...

    Keith, I enjoy your videos and would love to see more. I have a Baron with the Stec3100, Avidyne IDF and dual G5's. The G5's will not show the flight director bars from the Stec3100. I'm thinking of getting the Aspen 1000 Pro Max PDF because they say it displays the FD bars. Would you do the Aspen or something different if you were doing it again since you've been flying a while with your panel? Thanks for your input.

      I am still very much an Aspen lover, so yes, I think that's a good plan. As we know Garmin doesn't play well with others, but Aspen seems to do very well.
      I have a few more video plans, but right now it's engine rebuild time. I had a bearing failure on the case... that might be worth a video also.

    Hi Keith any reason you can't see the runway until you nearly on it, I thought with the SV you should be able to see it a few miles out ??

    • @cardinalflyer
      @cardinalflyer  Před 4 lety +2

      There may be something to do with scale there, in this video I have the scale set pretty wide. That's something I'm still playing with. Also the runway tends to hide under the horizon line. I know on the Avidyne very often it is hiding behind the altitude tape...
      I can see the appeal of a very large PDF screen, if only to still see the runway when there is a large wind correction angle. At times I have played with slipping just to keep the runway on the screen.

    Keith.
    Can you share with me where did you have your avionics system installed and how long did it take

    • @cardinalflyer
      @cardinalflyer  Před 3 lety +1

      Mobile Avionics at Lake in the Hills airport. Funny, I don't recall how long it took. More than a couple of weeks!

    Hello, I liked your air park community, but saw the lake in the hills was near Chicago. Where are you located in Illinois that has terrain?

      We are pretty close to Lake in the Hills. Check out 68IS, Casa de Aero on Maps.

    Did you have to install a ST-670 to get the 3100 FD interface?

    • @cardinalflyer
      @cardinalflyer  Před 3 lety

      That is an interesting question. The log entry says a 'system' was installed but does not mention the ST-670. The schematics do show an ST670 and mention the ST645 as an option. I'm pretty sure it was required and installed, but these days 429 is doing more and more... you should check with STEC to be sure.

    35 yr A&P IA 54 yrs old. From 6:50 to 7:40 it seems that your vertical speed is severely lagging from approach to touch down and into climb out. If it were me I would be checking your static system for blockage. If there's not blockage, I would and am worried about the Aspen interpretation and presentation. This is what makes IFR by hand possible. By hand eye coordination micromanaging the piper to not allow any vertical speed movement. The autopilot would notice internal v/s movement way before we would if it is on. But if off we need there to be no lag in vert speed presentation to keep altitude held constant. Speaking from well over 17,000 hours flight doing this by hand often in my planes at home and at work. There is no lag in my work airplanes electronic PFD VSI presentation but that is in a Boeing. I just bought an Aspen and this worries me. Please check this and respond. It may make your Stec 3100 sluggish as well in Alt Hold. There is no way to email you directly here on youtube it seems or I would have made this private.

      You are making an assumption about video synchronization for that analysis. Unfortunately my cameras do not have a perfect timesync, so you can't really draw any conclusions about the timing between the view out front and the inset video. Scroll back a bit for the timing of crossing over the numbers and you'll see the inset is lagging by a bit... not usually a problem unless someone like you notices that it doesn't quite feel right.
