You need to check out their newest release, a cover of âThe Prayer.â It is truly the best so far.
As many pentaholics say, "They don't do covers; they do upgrades."
Scott 'Dolf' Hoying, if you watch him, he is gripping the back of the chairs. He uses his hands so much when he sings, and they wanted this video to show little motion so he had to grip the chairs to keep from using his hands. The emotions that they convey just screams 'break up' I love this one and the way you two reacted to it! and BTW: Kevin's Cello is named Beyoncé
I second The Prayer. We're talking Hallelujah country, Thank You, last year Christmas, piano and cello!
Bowing...cello is played with a bow. Plucked notes are the style called pizzicato.
It's also called col arco.
I played the cello when I was 12 years old. Believe me, it was sawing. LOL
Bowing, with the "o" as in Boeing, NOT like "au" in Bauhaus
Kevin is so talented. Avi's solo part just gets me in the heart. Can't wait for you to see their new video for The Prayer. The tall blonde is Scott.
Avi stares into your soul when he sings.
@@bridgethaines7127 that's the perfect way to describe when he sings
I didnât see âImagineâ in your PTX playlist! Dudes, that is a MUST! You guys will absolutely LOVE it. I hope thatâs coming soon! Thanks for the fantastic reactions!
Kevin Olusolaâs version of Down by Marion Hill is a MUST if you want to hear him play the cello, beatbox, sing and see how he can produce a song in all its parts all on his own! Also, their version of The Prayer is insanely good! Just came out the other day!
This is gorgeous. Yes, you must do them with Lindsey Stirling on "Radioactive." And for more beatboxing while playing strings, Imagine Dragons awesomeness, check out VoicePlay's cover of "Warriors." Geoff's drop at 1:56 is typical Geoff blowout. Thanks, guys!
Canât wait to see you do their latest: âThe prayerâ!
I second the nomination of "Down", the cover that Kevin does. It's a mindblowing example of just how talented he really is.
Scott just had his hair dyed extra blond a few days earlier. They filmed the video while they were in tour rehearsals. They vlogged their tour that year and every year since, which can be seen on their PTXVlogs channel.
Kirstin actually had an infection in her eyelid from getting her eyebrow pierced. Her swollen eyes make her look sad, like she was crying. Shes an amazing actress, but she used her real pain in her performance
I did not know that! Thanks for the info! Learning something new every day! đ€
Radioactive is the song you were talking about with Lindsey Stirling. BUT they also collabed with her on their brand new Christmas album for a crazy version of Over The River. You just wouldn't expect that to be a beautiful song and yet here we are.
I also like Mitch's beard. Alas, some years ago, Kirstin said in an interview that she would also like its return and Mitch wasn't having it... he snarked that she just liked Masc Mitch đ€Ș
Echoing the earlier commentors in requesting a reaction to The Prayer. They released the video two days ago and it NEEDS more attention. The original was Celine Dion and the Italian opera singer, Andrea Bocelli. They killed it. And people don't seem to be having trouble getting it blocked * knock on wood *
I'm also not much of a fan of Christmas music... but I got Evergreen and have been listening to it obsessively already đ
They also collaborated with Lindsay for a song in French, Papaoute.
so happy to see you guys doing PTX again! love you guys! :)
they just released The Prayer. a MUST see!
also, yes, PLEASE, react to Kevin's cover of Down. it will melt your brain.
Hallelijah, Amazing Grace land but for ME,⣠higher
Matt and Chris âgeekin outâ over good music. That is just the sweetest AND coolest thing to witness. Another example of instrument and beatboxing, âWarriorâ by Voiceplay. Lane does a bit of that in their video. Thanks Ronny/Ronnie; visual video touches are fun.
Thank you so much, gentlemen, for reacting to this. This great-grandmother only discovered PTX during this awful year and a half and 307 a few months ago. Any to which you opt to react are so welcome, but if I might suggest, some of PTX newer releases will be wonderful.
Yes, you have to check out more PTX/Kevin stuff that includes his celloboxing! Their cover of Imagine Dragonâs âRadioactiveâ with Lindsey Sterling is badass. And their cover of Ed Sheeranâs âPerfectâ and Lady Gagaâs & Bradley Cooperâs âShallowâ also have similar vibes to this song (both feature a lot of celloboxing and background vocals that mimic stringed instruments). Also check out Kevinâs videos for âStay With Meâ and âDownâ. He uses lots of looping to build up the songs, and the manâs many, many talents will blow your mind. đ€Ż
I basically squealed when you said you would dedicate a week to PTX Christmas music. đ I associate the two so much that âChristmasâ and âPTXâ are basically synonyms in my mind. LOL. They just released âThe Prayer,â and itâs an absolute must! Some of my other top suggestions would be the live version of âHallelujahâ from their TV Christmas special, the live version of âSilent Nightâ that they recorded on a whim in the hallway of a cathedral in Europe (you will swear that a choir of angels is singing you a lullaby), âMary, Did You Know,â âThe First Noelâ (that one really shows off Aviâs range), âO Come All Ye Faithfulâ (has a really cool African/tribal vibe to it - sounds like you would imagine âA Very Lion King Christmasâ would sound like đ), âYouâre a Mean One, Mr. Grinchâ (Matt shows off a fun, theatrical side in that one), âThank Youâ (an original that Scott and his boyfriend wrote reflecting on everything that happened in 2020), and âAmazing Grace/My Chains Are Gone.â
Then thereâs also âColdest Winter,â âLittle Drummer Boy,â the Grammy-winning âDance of the Sugar Plum Fairy,â etc. Maybe just dedicate a month? đ€·ââïžđ
I recommend their original 'Run to you', for lots of feelings.
THeir live performance of this song is fantastic! Imagine Avi singing opera - which he did in college.
Aviâs voice is incredible â€ïž, so underused in Pentatonix.
Almostly love this song by them. Gosh Kirsten and Avi grab hold of your heart the whole time. Kevin is bowing his cello, so talented.
They now own this. Beautiful. Powerful.
Love your reactions and the knowledge you share. Thanks
I second checking out The Prayer, canât wait to see your reaction!!
Fingers crossed for a week of PTX and Christmas Reactions. âLittle Drummer Boyâ sealed my love for them. âYouâre a Mean One Mr. Grinchâ really shows Mattâs voice. And if Santa finds I havenât been naughty, maybe I will get a reaction for HomeFree âDo You Hear What I Hearâ:and âGrandma Got Ran Over By a Reindeerâ. A Mix of pure singing beauty and arrangements with a mix of flat out fun and smiles. And icing on the cake, Chris and Matt. Yeah!
The choir/chord conversation at 13:00-ish--that feeling when you go from singing the notes to making music. Ohhhh, that feeling. Best ever.
Kev does a beautiful cello rendition of a connecting role on âShallowâ! Their version of âShallowâ is killinâ! Oh, and donât forget they did this early in their career! Kirstie is blowing up now! Sheâs belting now like the boys! The Trio has been best friends since they were 10 years old, so they intuitively know how to arrange!
I always love how Scott and Mitch are basically the violins and Avi is the standing bass when their not so going words. They sound like they're sliding the bow across strings along with Kevin on his cello.
âThe Prayerâ is the best theyâre ever sounded
FYI, when Kevin is playing his cello, plucking the strings is called pizzicato, and using the bow is called BOWING! đđđ You guys just kill me. Love â€ïž your reactions. Do "Shallow" if you haven't already. Kevin plays in that one too.
ABSOLUTELY the best Pentatonix vocal is "The Prayer". This one finally tops "hallelujah".. it is that good. GREAT harmonies and emotional.
Gentlemen, welcome to celloboxing!
Your reactions are truly entertaining and while your comments are musically spot on, watching your friendship is just as entertaining. Thanks for sharing it with us.
This continues to be one of my favorites of Pentatonix for several reasons. It was the first time I heard Kevin and his cello (see suggestions below from the others for more). It is indeed one of the most solemn/stoic and yet powerful covers they've done. I believe I heard that they were supposed to minimize their posture and hand movements as if they were painted in a framed portrait. It adds to the emotional angst of the song and lyrics. But I can only imagine how hard that was for them when filming and if you rewatch it, you see occasional movement but it is very minimal. Kevin is the only one who really moves much and it's because you can't play a cello without it. One of my favorite parts is when the cello is silent and Scott starts, then Avi joins, then Mitch, then Kirstie, then the cello reenters and it builds.
Thanks again for another delightful reaction.
đđđđđđ thanks a million Wendi we Appreciates your comments for real!
@@307Reacts Did a travel nursing assignment up there in Wyoming so you guys always touch a soft spot in my heart when I see you. Miss it up there! You remind me of my home peeps here in Texas.
They said somewhere that the layout is supposed to be a family portrait. That's why there is very little movement.
Oh man, I canât wait for yâall to get to Home Freeâs most recent video for Brothers in Arms. Just, like, prepare yourselves as best you can because itâs gonna be All The Harmonies and All The Feelings.
As far as Christmas music, I totally get the fatigue but Iâm glad youâre going to do some reactions anyway. I would suggest that yâall check out some Home Free Christmas stuff, though, because they have some great originals as well as some covers of less well known or expected songs, especially on their most recent album, Warmest Winter.
I can't wait for them to do American Pie, Down to the honky-tonk, Moonshine, Folsom Prison Blues and the Butt's Medley
This one tugs at the heart and when Kirstin wails it just gets to me. Only PTX can pull off an arrangement like this with the vocals and Kevin's incredible ability to play cello while beat boxing. Loved your reaction!!!
They are magical for sure. 2 new ones to hit "I just Called to Say I Love You", "The Prayer".
Pentatonix just released their new Christmas album. Itâs has a really cool vintage vide to it. And they just released a video for two if the song. The Prayer is the best song I have EVER heard them cover and the other is a Stevie Wonder song I Just Called to Say I Love You. Also crazy good! đđ»
It's called "bowing" the instrument.
went down comments and didnt see it up near top but on cello or any classical stringed instrument it called "bowing"
They did a cover of "Mary Did You Know". It is so beautiful. The contrast in that song is incredible! Definitely should react to that one.
You know Kevin is using a bow, therefore he is bowing.
You can tell it is a cello, not a viola, because he doesn't have to stop and tune it once every minute.
đ€Łđ
Another fire reaction I'm here for it all
Thank you. Iâve been waiting for yâall to do another Pentatonix. I canât wait for the next one.
Bowing!!
Loved your reaction. Using the bow the most common way is called "bowing". Plucking it for classical music is called "pizzicato", for country or bluegrass, it's called "picking".
This song gives chills, no matter how many times Iâve hear it! Thx for reacting!!!
Bowing. He is sliding his bow over the strings of the cello.
Kristin looks sad here because she had an eye infection after a piercing when this video was made. Also, Kevin is so good he was in an international cello competition being judged by the great Yo Yo Ma. Kevin came in #2, but Yo Yo Ma was so taken by KO's celloboxing that he offered to be KO's mentor. Not too shabby!
Love your reactions and conversations. So fun to watch â„ïž cannot wait to see your reaction to their lates cover of Prayer đ which is absolutely breathtaking
Love y'alls reaction.....a couple of PTX songs Imagine, Shallow. Perfect. Amazing Grace, The Prayer and one of their originals released recently Prayers for this World...beautiful...thanks
This is one of my top favorites, and you guys did a wonderful reaction. This song brings so many feels.
Check out Kevin's cover of "Down." He is a force of talent!
Kirstie gives voice to the pain in any doomed relationship. My heart breaks a little every time I listen to this. Great reaction, guys.
Scott Hoying (baritone-tenor-bass) is your Dolph Lundgren doppleganger. Classic baritone, goes wherever needed no matter how crazy the intervals get. Then he pops out a mid tenor lead with an interesting voice texture.
He's really fun in their EDM original, Love Again.
This has absolutely nothing to do with music, BUT when you mentioned Dolph Lundgren, it brought back memories of working with his cousin at a care center for teens with connection issues. Talk about a doppleganger!
Omg the dolf lungrand comment had me rolling.
I can not wait for you to do The Prayer that they just released, and also, O Come All Ye Faithful which has a Caribbean vibe!
This one really hits hard and itâs even better sharing it with you. This is music at its best doing what only music can do to the heart. Eargasmic!
the term for moving a bow across strings is called bowing, plucking is called pitzicado
What a Great reaction!! Thank You Guys!!
It's so fun to hear you guys react...It's like you are exhausted from trying to keep up and respond to all the parts.
I love the use of call and response in this version. It adds so much.
Be the "307 Dangerous Duo."
Home Free sings some fun Christmas music "Full of Cheer" and "Full of More Cheer" are great albums, end to end.
Where the hell have you two been?!?! I only come see you two react to Pentatonix. đ€đ
When Scott saw a CZcams video of Kevin playing chello while he was beatboxing, that is what clenched it to reach out to him to join the group for the Sing Off competition. Kevin was about to go to medical school, and he decided to remain with the group instead.
I think y'all should be the "307 Players" ! Their version of The Prayer just hit last Friday. Y'all should check it out...it's phenomenal!
Great reaction! Thank you both for sharing your time with us. âźïž
Absolutely one of my favorite acapella covers. For whatever reason it also made me think of Straight No Chaser - I'm Your / Somewhere Over the Rainbow which I love as well.
I love Pentatonix, they are amazing â„ïž
This is late but just so you know ... When he plucks the strings it's called pizzicato (derived from the Italian word "pizza" no kidding...) and when he uses the bow, big anticlimax here, it's called bowing.
The original of this song is legit, and YES this is the best version of it.
Kevin did cello and beatbox videos before he joined Pentatonix. That's how they found him.
Yea! Youâre back with more PTX! Sooo many more to do...PLEASE!
Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies - 2nd Grammy
Imagine - John Lennon cover
Sound of Silence - Simon & Garfunkel cover
SING! - original (star studded)
The Prayer - (Just Released off new album) Celine Dion/Andrea Bocelli cover
Sing-Off, Superfruit, Individual stuff, Original works,
Love to see you do Xmas...but if you started today, and did TWO reactions everyday, you MIGHT finish by New Years!
Yes to all of these...
Since he is using a bow it shall be called bowing.
Toddletonix!!! They're so young!
Guys, if you want to hear some of Kirsties talent, try listening to Shallow, or, one of the best, in my opinion, showing her quality and talent, from runs, to whistle notes, and everything in between, plus some great smiles, from her, and Scott, when they nail there parts is there video with a choir background in SEASONS OF LOVE. She's feeling it, and does her own fantastic job.
I have been happily subscribed and loving your reaction and interactions for a while. I just turned my notification button on so I don't miss any of your Pentatonix Christmas reactions. My favorite is "Mary Did You Know?". Thank you and Merry Christmas!
Scott Hoying. You were mixing it up with Rob Lundquist. You guys never fail to make me laugh!
awesome
Dude...are you wearing a kilt? Cool. Thank you for your reactions.
Love this song, great reaction!
This was one of their earliest videos, back when they were producing them themselves in their own living room. You bow a cello.
No, this one was done on a set. They were on tour and took a break to do this. Its in one of the PTX Vlog episodes.
Kevin is solo with 'Down' (Marion Hill cover). Honestly, this showcases his truly amazing talent.
Bowing the cello.
Plucking to bowing.
For something different but absolutely amazing, please react to
âLet Freedom Ringâ by The Gaither Vocal Band live at Carnegie Hall.
The guy in blue is David Phelps and he is so powerful. You will want to see all of his solo performances đđ»đđ»đđ»
Yay! Finally some PTX! I love your reactions and especially to PTX! Really enjoy your musicians perspective đđ¶đ§Ą
Pray that you manage to do your PTX-mas week without problemsđ Looking forward to it SO MUCH đđđ
The tall blond is Scott. And Dolph Lundgren? Ha! Incongruous, because Scott is about the most adorable, overgrown goofball who ever goofed.
Did you notice the really restrained, no movement singing in the starting section? For a group used to moving around, it's kind of neat to see them start building and building in that movement.
Great reaction. It was highly entertaining. Thank you. Please react to Pentatonix new video for "The Prayer".
Enjoying watching you both...glad you're back with PTX covers...will definitely be watching your reactions on PTX Christmas songs, pls start with their cover on the Prayer..
The theme for the video was "old fashioned family portrait where no one wants to be there" so they are barely moving. Scott Hoying is Dolph Lundgren lol. Also poor Kirstie had an eye infection for the video shoot and STILL killed it dead. Can't wait til you get to The Prayer which they just released. If it doesn't get them a 2023 grammy we riot.
Here is Kevin's background pre-Pentatonix
Kevin Olusola, Pentatonixâs beatboxer, is a Yale graduate (pre-med). He speaks fluent Mandarin Chinese, loves classical music, and plays piano, cello, and saxophone. He had performed at Carnegie Hall twice as soloist on the cello and saxophone and has appeared on NPRâs âFrom The Top at the age of 17! âczcams.com/video/cg-WQl3YCVY/video.html
In 2009, he won second place in an international cello competition hosted by Yo-Yo Ma. In 2011, his âJulie-Oâ CZcams video was featured by CBS, AOL, Huffington Post and the Washington Post, among others. czcams.com/video/2TK3KvDwubI/video.html
He was named one of 100 âHistory Makers in the Makingâ by TheGrio and was chosen by Quincy Jones to represent him in concert at the 2012 Montreux Jazz Festival alongside Bobby McFerrin and Chick Corea.
He also beatboxes strongly in "Shallow" along with playing Cello. It's another GREAT from Pentatonix. Other favorites of mine (no beatboxing): "Are You That Somebody", "Blinding Lights", and "90's Dance Medley", "Can't Hold Us" & "Radioactive" (THIS is the Lindsey Stirling collab they did with Kevin beatboxing and playing.
I am a crazy-mad Avi Kaplan fan! I can't resist a good bass, and I've never heard better. đ„°đ„°đ„°
Its BOWING !!!! LOL
If you've not seen it already, you need to check out their project The Wizard of Ahhh's with Todrick Hall. It's freaking genius. You also then need to check out Todricks stuff (he's made entire visual albums)
Start your PTX Christmas with âOh Come all Ye Faithfulâ and get off to a great upbeat start!!!
307 snaps
đ€đŒđ€đŒđ€đŒđ€đŒ yessss
It would be called "bowing". Hilarious.
