I love the Sakura Micronpens! And they last forever too. I still think regular pens are really good for crosshatching, especially to give it a more woodcut style, but yeah, pens like these have a great smooth feeling.
Of course I'm biased, but I love the look of California Poppies! They were much more wild and around everywhere when I was younger, since you're not allowed to cut them down... But with climate change, I don't sadly see them as much in the wild as before. I think this was a great interpretation of Cottagecore, and defintely love the look of these.
There's a set of books I think you'll like, technically made as a reference for TTRPGs but it collects like various lore and the science based on teh natural world and has some lovely illustrations. Herbalist Primer is out now, and Geologist Primer should be out soon. Both by Double Proficiency.

I totally agree, I think it’s mechanically easier to crosshatch with a ballpoint rather than felt tip……but the smudging was killing me 😅😅😅
