From someone who works in museums, just an FYI: many art museums prefer pencil in the galleries so as to not risk accidents, and occasionally gallery assistants will offer a golf pencil if you don't have one available. Natural History tend to be more open to ink!

I'd never heard of dark academia, except for a mention in one of your other videos. I've apparently marinated myself in the aesthetic for decades, though. Except for the clothing. After leaving DC and Moscow, I moved to the U.S. South and traded in my tweeds, cardigans, and leather gloves for short-sleeved shirts, jeans (the only trousers that can withstand the affectionate onslaughts of my hundred-pound dog), and gardening gloves.
The pens. My favorite pen for library research is an Omas Russian Empire with an 18k EF nib. It's a massive pen, lacquered black with raised gold emblems of Russian imperial power. It's flamboyant and as serious as a heart attack and perfect for writing extensive notes in the margins and between the lines of copied books and journal articles. Any nib broader than EF wouldn't do.
The pen I used throughout my PhD program was a Waterman Gentleman, sterling silver in the godron pattern with a 14k F nib. I have binders with hundreds of pages of notes I took in my courses and as I worked out the math in my dissertation. I don't remember the name of the ink I used, but those hundreds of pages of notes are written in a turquoise-blue ink. It's an attractive color; I wish I remembered what it was.
My wife gave me a Yard-O-Led Grand Viceroy Victorian pen this week with an 18k F nib. I've always been partial to silver pens, and this one is the largest and heaviest of the lot. It's a beautiful, handmade piece of craftsmanship that exudes English style without excessive English understatement. It's a pen for a viceroy, for a college professor, for a dark academic.
Is this the video that resulted in the charge of "pretentiousness"? I'd say so from a couple of the comments. I'm glad we cleared up the issue of books. Thank you for your response to my comments on that video. You're clearly a man with a well-defined sense of style and not ashamed of it. Some people would consider the use of fountain pens in general to be a pretentious affectation. Even inexpensive ones of low quality are more expensive than excellent ballpoints, so using fountain pens does make some sort of statement. But it's not usually pretentious. I think of fountain pens in term's of Obi Wan's comment about lightsabers, "an elegant weapon for a more civilized age." Perhaps less cost effective than a blaster (an extraordinarily inefficient weapon in the hands of Imperial storm troopers), but its use makes a statement, and not one of a false sense of superiority, but of a preference for another way of life.
Fountain pens can be an aesthetic repudiation of a technologically and efficiency-driven system of life in favor of something more elegant, slower, more demanding of practice and thought in use. I don't look down on people who reject that in favor of a gel-pen world, or going even further, a meme and emoji and 280-character world. I just don't share their enthusiasm for it. It's not what makes me happy. That's not pretension. Nor is a love of books and classical music. These are just preferences in a world that often doesn't appreciate that kind of diversity.

      Hello My Friend,
You have a wonderful and eclectic collection of pens. Well done. I am also a big fan of Waterman pens, especially the older ones.
Nice to see that Obi-wan quote! I use it often in this Channel. So nice seeing you having a similar thought. We do share many common threads.
I think it was Dark Academia 2 that inspired that comment most recently. That was an ambitious video. I love doing the high concept ones.

Hemingway, I loved this video. I am a dark academic. Who knew? (i will look back at the first one of this two part series). I do cherish my college days, hours at the library studying, note taking, also hours at any museum, library or book store, especially used book stores, I've worked in both old and new bookstores. I love stacks of books in every room (my husband doesn't but I do! ;) I would write by candlelight, read by candle light, (I would also add knit by candle light). I love writing letters and cards. I love tea rooms, with mood lighting where I can sit for hours going between books and journaling. My husband says I love anything with wagon wheels, hats and long dresses, sometimes I feel as though I'm in the wrong century. I love archeology, anthropology, fiction, theology, medieval times. I try these days to focus on Christian things as I can't do it all, thus I prioritize. There are so many ancient writings from our Church fathers and it's so wonderful to imagine their scribes writing away on papyrus, or hides, which later came to influence the whole world. Imagine if you could have a pen and ink they used? As it turns out I have all but two of the pens you mentioned. I can't grip the Homo Sapiens and I can't find locally the Custom 823, but I have a Century 3776. I finally got my grail Montblanc Meisterstuck Le Grande, and while I love you MB, because its vintage, I know mine will last me the rest of my life, come what may, and one day be vintage. I think you could make a book out of this series, it's so clever. Bravo. I'll consider becoming a patron, but until then I will enjoy the lovely free content. Regards, Cheryl

@@HemingwayJones Hemingway, here is one book for your Dark Academia tastes that I strongly recommend because this author must be exactly how you describe, and so is the world he creates. You just have to try it, it has the libraries and weird architecture and quirk characters and because his series is still incomplete, it takes it to a nerdy nail-biting bit of collectors anxiety: Patrick Rothfuss, The Name of the Wind, the first in his Kingkiller chronicles. I am usually a fiction person, but I loved Lord of the Rings, and some other well written fantasy, and this is one of the best I think, dense and detailed and well paced, and I only lament the series may never be completed.

Lovely video. I can tell you put a lot of thought into what you include in each frame.
I am also on team Short Ink Attention Span. I was, at one time, very devoted to Parker Ruby. Alas. These days I've developed modes of work that involve changing my ink color each day or for each project, so while I had CONCERNS about the con-40, experimentation has revealed that I can, with my handwriting, get about 12-13 A5 pages out of it. That's perfectly fine as long as I load the pen first thing in the morning, or stick an Inkvent bottle in my pocket. Those things are so convenient.

Absolutely off the charts AWESOME Hemingway. A+++++ You gave us so much great material to think about. And you are inspiring me to do some things like visit some local museums (yes they have them in Florida :) and read some of those books you mention. Like most people some of my fondest memories are from my days in college. Particularly law school. You live in the library when you are a law student...particularly in your first year. We used to study on the lower floors of the library and we called it "the catacombs"! And the close ups of the butterflies were awesome. You must have a great cinemaphotographer on staff. I will definitely play this tonight during "happy hour" on the big screen TV in the living room. My wife will love it too. BTW, sign me up for the "Dark Academia Club". I'm all in. Can't wait to watch it again...and probably again.
As far as the pens you picked I liked them all except the retractable one. How about the Platinum Preppy? Its a fantastic pen for under $10 and writes as well or better than some $800 pens I have. It blows me away. AWESOME OFF THE CHARTS!!!

Two more pens for the Dark Academic. From Nahvalur (formerly Narwhal), their Nautilus Bronze Corydoras fountain pen. A black ebonite pen, with bronze trim features and three porthole windows to check the ink level. If not the Bronze Corydoras, then the Cephalopod Black version. For a more mainstream pen, possibly go with the Pilot Custom 912 with its choice of 15 different nib sizes and styles (I have the SU (stub) nib, but imagine the others.) And for a book, try Lemony Snicket's POISON FOR BREAKFAST.

As someone who teaches future librarians and archivists and as a second-generation academic how could I not love that video. Lovely choices, although I wonder how many academics can afford MB or Visconti. Maybe one … I picture more of a stealth under-appreciated pen like the old Reform pens from Germany, which were probably mostly reliable student pens but are quality piston-filler workhorses. I do love my Pilot Vanishing Point when taking notes or being inspired by the muse. I’m picturing this ‘dark academic’ as reading Rimbaud or Lovecraft or Poe after hours. Have you ever read Carlos Ruiz Zafron’s works. I think you would enjoy them. I’m looking forward to part III with notebooks, inks, and ideal vintage pens. You must use the word provenance in regards to the latter … as we imagine the past lives of pens and books and the thoughts they transmitted. Enjoy the weekend and I’m pleased you are feeling better. The new academic year approaches….

Regardless, both of your videos mentioned some grail pens for me with the Montblanc 149 in Part 1 and Part 2 including the Visconti Homo Sapiens.

My daily carry pens include a Kaweco Sport in dark blue, an Esterbrook Estie Raven, and the Kaweco Student, which has a bit of colour to it, but is still a wonderfully simple pen that fits well on top of my stacks of books and notebooks.

Excellent content, as ever. Great locations and lovely pens. I've recently acquired a Conway Stewart Winston in the Dartmoor finish, and that would make a great pen for this aesthetic. It's a heavyweight but sits handsomely on my desk. My vintage Conway Stewart 100, with its black/gold look and a broad stub nib, has the right classic look. For a note taking workhorse that's classy but understated I'd pick my Danish 1947 Parker VS. It's one of those pens that's grown on me overtime. Just very reliable. My last suggestion is a Parker 21, a student pen with some style.

I've been contemplating the Pilot Vanishing Point, and while it's undeniably a modern and sleek pen, I'm wondering if it truly fits the Dark Academia style. The black version seems to do alright, but the clicking mechanism doesn't quite resonate with the aesthetic I have in mind. Perhaps a Gold Parker Vacumatic or even a Conklin Mark Twain would exude a more pretentious vibe, which I believe Dark Academia enthusiasts would appreciate. Picture the act of screwing on and off the cap, a bit more refined and sophisticated, perfectly complementing a breast suit jacket pocket. Just a thought worth considering.

    • @HemingwayJones
      @HemingwayJones  Před 11 měsíci +1

I know what you mean, BenJoe, there is something very accessible to the VP. It is always at the ready. But it is also remarkably good for academia and note taking. It is my go to museum pen. Vacumatic is nice. I'm not a fan of the Conklin, but I respect it. Always appreciate your perspective and well reasoned feedback and comments! You are the best.

@@BenJoeMarklandWhilst you didn't connect with the vanishing point, I couldn't see any connection with the Kaweco. However, as per the video, HJ did try to connect each with the theme & I respect his thoughts here as they are his pens. The Kaweco in particular just would not have been mine.
Notwithstanding, it was a fun video & I tend to enjoy these videos on the basis of the joy it must give to the creator.
Alas, I just (literally) bought (another) a new guitar, surprisingly one that doesn't meet my aesthetic, but figured the deal was too good to pass up. On that note, I'm not looking for inspiration for a new fountain pen, although another book can never do harm, albeit I'm not going to learn hieroglyphics, there simply is no point. Although, it seems that's the exact point according to HJ. 😊

This is not really a comment on the video. It's just an experience I decided to throw out to this community. The mystery of two inks.
Since like a year back, I've had plans back in my head to maybe acquire two additional Iroshizuku inks. One was a (in my mind) slightly brown, glowing red/orange red, like an idealized burnt sienna but redder. The other was a sort of brownish grey, cold brownish but mostly grey. And I was convince I liked both colors. So I decided to shop today, but to my great surprise, two such Iroshizuku inks do not exist!? And the current lineup of 24 inks is 10 years old!? So I'm baffled. 😮 I have half convinced myself that they must have occurred in some dream I've had, and then lived on as a purchase plan in my head? There's another possibility, and that is that they lived for a while in some of Diamine's Christmas series, and that I saw them there and then for some reason assumed they were Iroshizuku inks.
Anyway, now I'm disappointed and also obsessed with finding two such inks. 🤪

Currently re-reading Conrad's Nostromo - In Conrad's The N****** of the Narcissus, in the early pages there is a reference to Bulwer-Lytton !?!?
