The iridium sounds like a really closely mic'd amp. I think that is it's limitations, it's inability to simulate the air/distancing of a mic'd cab.

Seemed to my ears that with the Iridium, the mids were more forward in most of the comparisons. Amps were silkier. I wonder if some of that could change with slight eq adjustments, boosting the treble and cutting some of the mid projection. It all sounded good, maybe in more complex mixes with vocals and other instruments, the differences might seem even more subtle. I now have a stupid long pedal rig but the front line preamp and compressor and a new UA interface really help me get DI tones I like a lot of the time. Beautiful playing and tones in this video! Thank you!

@@gibs8412 Yeah, I'm sure there's a difference in using a real preamp. I just think, or at least noticed within my own experience, the bigger gap in the digital technology is the cab/speaker/microphone simulation. Strymon, Line 6, etc... have come really close on the preamp side for my ears. The one difference I do notice on the preamp side is the interactivity between my volume knob and how it drives the preamp. The real thing responds to the input volume subtlety a bit more. Regardless, this sort of technology has come a long ways in the last decade. Cheers!

For anyone interested in Fender style capability of Iridium, it actually has 6v6 type amp in the round setting,
it's more like Deluxe Reverb with added mids knob. It sounds much different than Hot Rod Deluxe IV (i had both Iridium and HRDIV,
i sold the amp due to the valves and channel switching popping problems and i use Boss Nextone Stage as a pedal platform for loud playing
now and didn't look back even once, it's great!).

what a great video. The real amps are clearly superior, to a tube amp loving guitarist. That said, I just picked up an Iridium, so I don't have to mess with recording my tube amps in my condo. The iridium is a great sounding unit for sure. Listening to this, part of me was thinking the Iridium just sounds "different", not so much a better/worse thing. I never intended to replace the sound of a tube amp. Just replace the CPU eating amp sim plugins, which I think it does rather well.

Gracias!!

Iridium is great but sold mine & went back to my tube amps. You have to consider what happens if the Iridium bricks itself (heard many instances). Mine had a few glitches that were resolved via firmware update. This is a $400 computer chip/locked box. Power surges, etc can all cause an issue. Assuming you are original owner & under warranty (Strymon warranties are not xfer-able) Sending it to Strymon for a month or more for repair or replace doesn’t appeal.
