Softball Hitting Tips: Increase hitting power with the balloon tape/grip - tutorial

  • Another video on softball hitting tips. Here is a tutorial of how to install the balloon tape/grip on a bat in order to increase hitting power (note: I've also heard this called the bubble tape/grip). This is for hitters who like a thicker handle knob (i.e. tapered handle, knob cuffs, etc.). The video demonstrates how to keep the same feel as a knob cuff but with less weight. It also shows the weight difference, and how this moves the balance point of the bat, which can increase the pop on the ball.

If I remember rightly I didn’t understand what he was talking about the first time. Then he took what must have been a good chunk of time and spelled it out step by step for me. I read the description slowly several times before I finally understood what he was saying and the benefits. Super glad he was patient with me and kept trying because I love this new route 👍😂. Adding weight to the knob will not change the MOI(Moment of Inertia) of the bat as the pivot point is still above the knob cuff you installed regardless of whether it weights .01 or 1.0 ounces. In short it doesn't change the balance point of a bat when swung

    Hey bud, I liked the video and I don't wanna sound like I'm hating but, I was doing this back in 2010. I like how you did the pyramid/cone grip but if you just do the one piece of tape at the beginning of the "cone", you don't have to put a second piece at the bottom. Just take your hand as though you're tripping the bat and squeeze. That will form the bottom and it will be tight without the last piece of tape. Try it out bud. Again, not hating and yes, ppl that like to do the athletic tape, I say go for it. The knob cuff/self made cuff to me, makes the bat lighter and been trying to tell ppl I play with, the same. Enjoy your new bat too.

    Hi, I'm trying to see how it wouldn't collapse the air bubble with the horizontal tape? Or is that the idea? It looks good though I'm gonna try it, I have missed 4 home runs because I lack 10-20 more feet. In softball I use a 2 finger grip with my top hand 2 finger with the rest on my bottom hand, the whip is amazing, but, for baseball that grip doesn't get it, I am looking for a similar hack though, this might be it.

    • @bathound
      @bathound  Před 5 lety

      I find that if you put a horizontal piece of tape at the base of the bubble portion, it more "locks" in the bubble (knob cuff replica), so that it is tighter. I do that horizontal piece fairly tight. It took me a couple tries before I was able to get it all work out. If you give it a try let me know how you like it.

    • @bathound
      @bathound  Před 4 lety +1

      I've never actually swing a bat with one on, but I've purchased one - maybe two - used bat that had one on it. I recall weighing it, or looking up the weight, and if I remember correctly the tape alone still weighed less. That said, that would still be a better option than a typical knob cuff. However, for me, since doing this method for a year now I've really come to love the feel of it, even more than the knob cuff.

      @@johnnydarter The old ASA standards , dating back when we used 47 cor balls ( yes I know I just dated myself , been around a long time ) They limited any Endloads to not exceed a balance point of 21 inches . Most endloads balanced at 20 1/2 to 20 3/4 , so we figured out that by doing up a bat this way we could at least get to 21 or maybe exceed it . The 21 inch came from certification testing by ASA / USSSA . A bat with a 20 to 20 1/2 will not feel as endloaded nor it get the same type of whip as a 21 or greater . Plus using a knob cuff and leaving on the factory grips adds over a 1/2 ounce of weight into your hands , slows down your hands . Faster hands faster bat speed . Want to increase your hand speed more cut off a broom handle , add that old grip you just took off your bat to it ( cut the broom handle 34 inches . Practice swing it everyday in sets of 12 a couple times , before games do it . It will build your fast twitch muscles ( hand and arm speed ) There is no fast way to improve everything but a combination of workouts , practice and exercises you can preform anyone can learn to bust a ball traveling at you 12 MPH LOL Man I feel like I am coaching again , sorry so long , these responses way to long

    Apparently I’m late to the party but how do you think putting a bat grip on top of the balloon would hold up? I know it defeats the weight benefit but I’m thinking more about comfort.

      Good question. I've never tried it. I personally like a thinner handle so I like going with the hockey tape. But I would imagine it would work fine.

      @@bathound thanks for the reply but I used it today and can hole heartedly say I agree with you. I didn’t even finish wrapping with the hockey tape bc I wasn’t sure what I was going to do and it still felt great. 👍👍

    The bat was never balanced. Touched on either the barrel or the handle every time.

      Thanks for watching. While taking the first measurement, around the 2:30 mark I state, "It will be enough to demonstrate." My goal was to do it all in one take so I wasn't editing things like crazy, and so it was clear you could see the results without any funny business. What I meant in that statement was that if I spent more time trying to get to the half milimeter or whatever it would be, so that the bat totally floated, well sure the line may be a smidge up or down the barrel. But for the purpose of the video I was aiming to show that the balance point moves with the balloon grip.
      Anyhow, have you been able to try it out? If you get a chance to I'd be interested to hear how you like the feel of it and also the results you get in terms of weight and balance point differences.
      Again, thanks for watching.

    Why not just get a bat with a heavier end load and use the cuff

    • @bathound
      @bathound  Před 4 lety

      But even with the extra end load I would still not want to add more weight to the handle.

    I'm late to the party but the weight of the knob cuff is completely irrelevant, it's on the other side of the fulcrum created by your hands. The balance of the bat on the table isn't a good representation of the balance of the bat in your hands, which the weight of the cuff won't change.

    • @bathound

      Sorry I don't quite understand what you mean. Is there another way to explain it?

    • @jeremypitts9883
      @jeremypitts9883 Před 3 lety

      @@bathound the fulcrum is the pivot point created by your hands that little weight on the other side of your hands won't matter as it won't add to the swing weight of the bat.
