My clarinet teacher would do that with me except he would rotate the mouthpiece 180° and face me. I know this this sounds like a fairy-tale, but I started my son when he in 4th grade and as he became older, middle school and high school, I would do the same with him. He is now a 2nd semester college Jr and has changed his major from applied physics to music ed (his idea, I had nothing to with it, he seemed rather guilty about it). Recent repertoire includes; Osbourne Rapsody, Poulenc Sonata, Messager Solo de Concours, several mvts of the two Brahm's Clarinet Sonatas, Finzi Clarinet Concerto, sections of the Goodman Clarinet Concerto, Debussy Premiere Rhapsody and just this week auditioned for the up-coming University concerto competition with Freebirds (they didn't win, beaten out by a senior on the Debussy). As a parent, one hopes your child might be interested in and enjoy one of your areas, but that doesn't happen to often. I think he was surprised too. It kind of sneaked up on him. Go figure........
