  • From my 1965 "What's New" public TV series for children on WNET out of Brooklyn College. This is a Phil Ochs song. I love it.

I discovered you in 65. You led me to playing guitar and to folk songs from all over the world. I remember photographing you from the tv. I still have those photos, and I still play my twelve string: singing songs from here, there and everywhere. The great songs from the mid sixties seem to need being sung and heard now more than ever! I have sung " Turn Turn Turn" in church and people love I. Also I have carried " What's This I Hear" in my heart for decades, and now I can here it free and new, get the lyrics right, stars performing it again. Thanks for your music and for once again being a part of my life. God Bless, David

Another version of this song was taught to us by LAURA WEBER also on public TV in the mid sixties. (God rest her lovely soul) I was eight years old when I learned it and I still play it today at 63. AND now I'm finally learning to play and hopefully remember all the words to "Changes". Wish me luck. Some things worth it take time. Thanks for bringing this video back to us.

I have a guitar instruction booklet by Laura Weber, published by the station her show was on. Some previous owner gave her a mustache. :-)

Really neat, as are the other videos a few of which I've viewed so far. I wish all NET footage was this well preserved. I'd love to see a complete show.

I met Phil a few times. (Each time I had to 'meet' him again, because he didn't remember me.) In LA at the Troubadour bar I ran into him, and he tried to fix me up with the guy he was sitting with, whose name was Jack. I declined, for some reason, and later, after I saw "Easy Rider," I realized it was Jack Nicholson. I'm not sure if I dodged a bullet or missed an opportunity. Probably the former.

Al - Sorry this took me so long to answer. Two years! Yikes! Yes, I did know Phil and he once tried to fix me up with a guy at the Troubadour bar way back then. The guy was Jack Nicholson, but I hadn't yet seen Easy Rider. I said no. I don't know what I would have done if I had been star struck!

@@tracynewman3256 That's very interesting. My impression of Phil (I'm currently reading Michael Schumacher's biography of him) is that he was rather careless with his personal relationships, but then again, he was on a mission.

@@tracynewman3256 I'm not finished the book yet, but Phil put enormous energy into succeeding in his chosen career. "He was up every day at dawn, sitting with his guitar, working and writing for hours everyday..." (related by a colleague who travelled with him on page 55 of The Life of Phil Ochs). Not much time to attend to the niceties of life, but he seemed well loved anyway.

That's rather nervy of you. You could've said "Nice version, but Phil's is still my favorite." As for passion, she was singing it for kids, not a civil rights match! Kudos to you, Tracy, this IS a pretty tricky one to sing.
