I love Phoebe Bridgers so much. Funnily it wasn´t me, but my 57 year old Dad, who discovered her and spammed me on whatsapp with her songs until I finally really listened and started loving her. Ever since then, Phoebe (and other artist in that genre like Alice Phoebe Lou or Courtney Barnett) has been something that my Dad and I bond over. We keep sending each other new discoveries and just rn l sent this video to him (I expect he´s gonna answer that he already knows it and I´m way behind on what´s happening in the music world). Our mutual dream is to see Phoebe live on stage and we hope one day she´ll come to the south of Germany and play a concert. I´m so looking forward to this day. [Verse 1]
    A green plastic watering can
For a fake Chinese rubber plant
    In a fake plastic earth
That she bought from a rubber man
In a town full of rubber plans
    To get rid of itself
    [Chorus 1]
    It wears her out
    It wears her out
    It wears her out
    It wears her out
    [Verse 2]
She lives with a broken man
    A cracked polystyrene man
    Who just crumbles and burns
    He used to do surgery
    For girls in the 80s
    But gravity always wins
    [Chorus 2]
    And it wears him out
    It wears him out
    It wears him out
    It wears
    [Verse 3]
She looks like the real thing
She tastes like the real thing
    My fake plastic love
But I can't help the feeling
I could blow through the ceiling
If I just turn and run
    [Chorus 3]
    And it wears me out
    It wears me out
    It wears me out
    It wears me out
    [Outro]
And if I could be who you wanted
If I could be who you wanted

I'm the 41 year old daughter of one of the best dads to ever exist and unfortunately, he passed away a few days ago. I probably am Phoebe's typical demographic but I never looked into her or Arlo Park's music but this has inspired me to. Not sure it'll help my fragile state of mind while grieving but in case I ever wake up and say "Wow I really am not bored of crying all day so let me turn on one of the most beautiful covers of Fake Plastic Trees", I can now do so :) Also, the comment section is one of the best I've seen in a while. I'm even willing to listen to the extremely loud and startling "BBC RADIO 1" intro that has probably busted someone's ear drum by now. In conclusion, amazing cover of an amazing song by amazing artists!

Someone else may have pointed this out by now, but I believe this song was inspired by a Jeff Buckley performance (he used to cover "Just Like a Woman" which has a similar lyric delivery as this song), and Phoebe has been on the record saying Jeff Buckley's Live at Sin-é was a favorite record growing up (and I believe his cover of "Je n'en connais pas la fin" probably inspired "Savior Complex"), which would make this cover of "Fake Plastic Trees" a full circle. Jeff Buckley -> Radiohead -> Phoebe Bridgers.

Tom York wrote this song after a night out drunk. When he got home he felt extremely depressed and Fake Plastic Trees was born. It’s an incredibly difficult song to sing despite it sounding effortless. And she makes it sound totally effortless and angelic all in one go.
