I think I may have just found the best speech in the history of the Academy Awards. Apart from the unnecessary, overly familiar reference to his family member who’s in a different time zone and unable to watch him live, this one begins with a snappy but endearing one-liner (by an actual person, not a comedian), continues with a smart way to avoid a cliché (in the process making a memorable quote), and finishes with a heartfelt dedication to the people that matter. Thank you, Steven Soderbergh. You are a wonderful human being.
Soderbergh: Well. I was not sober at the time. And I had nothing prepared because I knew I wasn’t going to win [Best Director for Traffic]. I figured Ridley [Scott], Ang [Lee], or [Stephen] Daldry would win. So I was hitting the bar pretty hard, having a great night, feeling super relaxed because I don’t have to get up there. So the combination of a 0.4 blood alcohol level and lack of preparation resulted in me, in my state of drunkenness crossed with adrenaline surge ... I was coherent enough to know that [if I tried to thank everyone], that way lies destruction. So I went the other way. There were some people who appreciated that, and there were some people who really wanted to hear their names said, and I had to apologize to them.
As much as I love Gladiator and Ridley Scott in general, I'm glad Soderbergh won this for Traffic. It's a relatively rare case where the Academy not only gave it to the right person, but also, in my opinion, for the right film. So often the Traffics of people's careers go by unrewarded, and then years later the Academy plays catch up and awards a director for a solid, lesser film (Scorsese/The Departed).
