    Thanks, Fred. Back in the day you and Dave were the only reason I got an MTOD subscription. I watched DED on CZcams for years! I noticed that after Discovery came in the show began to be more and more high budget and started to look like Discovery's reality show stuff. Seeing you work on your own gear without the ludicrous timelines and budgets reminds me of the early days that inspired me so much. I love this content and it's got me really fired up to restore grandpa's '94 Bronco! 351 Eddie Bauer with every option and 253,000 miles. I just told him tonight that we're doing it in part because YOU inspired me. Maybe I'll catch you in Moab sometime. So again, thanks Fred. Stay rad.

      @@PolarisEricson I wish, but unfortunately it didn't pay the bills. Production and paying for all that was the issue. Nobody wants to maintain all that for zero profit and out of pocket expenses for production.

    lol , as soon as Fred mounted the wheel , i thought behind it is the perfect place for my squashy recovery gear bag .... and 30 seconds later that's exactly what he said

      Thought the same on my 2001 excursion. But miné currently has a 35x12.5x17 held with an eyebolt in factory mount and a ratchet strap…. Definitely not as secure as I would like

    Could probably find a tub of some kind to put under the tire in case of mud/dirt/debris and it could be used to hold or catch loose things or liquids while on trail.

    Thanks Fred. Lots of great points on your thought process. Two super low profile outside rear bumper swing-outs are made in California near you. Check out 4x4labs in Grass Valley and Dissent in Colfax.

    Maybe I'm just a dummy but ONX off-road is hard to figure out how to use. It's not very user friendly

    This is super cool! I keep my spare in the roof basket and I have to say I absolutely hate it. Having a 60~70 lb tire on the roof (plus tools and gear) makes it feel like I'm going to roll the truck at speed. And it kills my mileage.

    Aside from making hood (bonnet) opening more difficult, what options are there for mounting a spare there ala old Land Rover? Aerodynamics would be a mess but in a offroad situation those are not so critical. Thanks for the video and profile of another small business product. Buy local when possible.

    • @donhappel9566
      @donhappel9566 Před rokem

      It really obstructs visibility with any sort of modern tire size. Additionally, the weight of a modern tire/wheel (My Disco wheel/tire package comes in around 130 lbs) is likely to cave in a hood that wasn't designed for it. Even the stock tiny Series wheel/tire would eventually cause the hood to dent. It does look "right" for an old Series Rover, but only if you're going for a stock size.

    What about a roof rack spare tire. how often do you have problems with roof clearance?

    • @donhappel9566
      @donhappel9566 Před rokem

      Roof rack is probably the worst place to put a spare (or jerry cans or anything heavy). It kills your lateral stability both on trail and on road. Additionally, who wants to huck 100-150 lbs of tire 6'+ into the air to get it up there? It also really hurts your aero so expect a noticeable hit to economy on the highway. I'm a Rover guy and so many Rover people seem enamored with piling tons of crap on the roof rack...it's just a terrible idea but everybody wants to look like they're going to cross the Sahara circa 1950.
