How Rwanda is Improving Their Healthcare System 2023

After the tragic genocide in 1994, Rwanda's healthcare system faced significant challenges. The government knew that something had to be done to ensure that all Rwandans, regardless of where they lived, had access to quality healthcare. In the aftermath of the genocide, the country had to rebuild almost everything from scratch, including the healthcare system. The government was determined to create a healthcare system that would serve the needs of all Rwandans, not just a select few.
One of the key initiatives the government implemented was the use of community health workers (CHWs). These workers are trained to provide basic health services, such as maternal and child health care, in communities. They work closely with local health centers and hospitals, and are able to refer patients to these facilities for more advanced care. This has been extremely successful in increasing access to healthcare in remote areas and has helped to reduce maternal and child mortality rates.
Another initiative that has been implemented is the Rwanda Social Security Board (RSSB) which provides health insurance to over 6 million Rwandans. This insurance covers a wide range of health services, including primary care, hospital care, and some specialized care. This has helped to make healthcare more affordable for people and has improved their overall health outcomes. With the coverage provided by the health insurance, people are able to seek medical help when they need it, without worrying about the financial burden.
In addition to these initiatives, the government has also invested in building new health facilities and upgrading existing ones. This has led to an increase in the number of health centers and hospitals, making it easier for people to access healthcare. The government has also focused on training more healthcare professionals such as doctors, nurses and other healthcare staff, to improve the overall quality of care.
But Rwanda's healthcare system didn't stop there, they've also implemented telemedicine program, which uses technology to deliver health services remotely. This program helps to overcome the challenges of shortage of healthcare professionals and lack of infrastructure in remote areas. Telemedicine allows health care professionals to diagnose and treat patients remotely, using video conferencing, phone calls, and mobile text messaging. This means that people in remote areas are able to receive medical care, even if a healthcare professional is not physically present.
Despite the challenges, the healthcare system in Rwanda has made significant progress in recent years, and the government's efforts to increase access to healthcare have been successful. This is an important reminder of the power of empathy, and how individuals, government, and community working together can make a real difference in improving the health of the whole population. The people of Rwanda, the healthcare workers, and the government have all played an important role in rebuilding the healthcare system, and their work continues to this day.
