My mom used to cut the scraps into strips and sew them all end to end using them to crochet what we called rag rugs. They are colorful and can be thrown in the washer and dryer and are durable. I still have a few she made from 40 years ago that have been in continuous use, although the colors are more muted.
My mother made a similar rug by cutting the plastic bags a loaf of bread came in into a continuous strip maybe 3/4 inch wide, per bag. With the looooooong strips of plastic, she crocheted round rugs for wiping muddy shoes on at the door leading to the veggie patch. They couldbe hosed off outdoors
My grandmother made rag rugs too! Living through the depression era, she made use of every scrap fabric she had. It became just part of who she was the rest of her life.
A lot of beautiful, simple quilts and colorful rag rugs came her skills using those scraps!
@@lorinelson7523 my grandmother had a large rug loom in her cellar and did exactly what you said. Grandma was smart, she did her rug weaving in the summer bacause it was nice and cool down there
My grandmother made small oval rugs from 2” strips of Men’s suits. This was during WW2. Still being used

Its much easier to do fabric stripes by pinning pin onto ironing board when you pin on one place, come up and pin it about one and half centimetre further back to board. Then you put there folded stripe and as you pull it, it will fold itself. Then you can just pull it with one hand and iron with second. English is not my native language, so I hope my description make sense…

I cut up old striped, drapes and used another fabric with it to make a bedspread. Gorgeous work!
What a nice way of making bias tape in those first few minutes. I always wondered what to do with off cuts and ends.
Yes, to me that is the gift this really delivers. I guess that makes me like the toddler who prefers the box to the 100$ item that was in it. But I'm saving this under "bias tape," cuz I've been wanting to know how they do it.

Being the impatient & lazy,... i mean efficient person that i am, i would tape a skinny length of cardboard along the ends of every 2nd strip so that at least one set can be flipped up all at the same time. I think flipping them 1 by 1 would start to annoy me about halfway through, lol. I wonder if taking the time to set up a simple loom would be worth the trouble.

People used to do something similar using the ribbons from wedding gifts to make a throw pillow cover.
I thought she was going to make a tote bag. But, it is a cute chair cover.
