    Masterpieces that stayed in the mainstream repertoire for a long time tend to be played slower and slower over the years. But not here. Towards the end they really went for the tempo Prokofiev himself used in his own recording of this concerto! Amazing!

      @MattWeisherComposer Před 6 lety

      Heather I don’t think that’s true at all. I think conductors push tempos in both directions. Look at Baroque pieces that today are played at almost twice the pace that we heard them in the first available recordings. I think any good conductor should be in a sense a historian and a performer as well and be able to feel the tempo that makes the most sense to serve the music. And as someone who conducts myself, I like music that feels it should go fast should go Fast.

    • @Heather-im5sg
      @Heather-im5sg Před 6 lety +3

      "Baroque pieces that today are played twice the pace that we heard them in the first available recordings" does not imply they are played twice the pace they were when they were premiered. Playing Baroque pieces the way we do today is a relatively new development and the fact that they were played that slowly when recordings first became available before people became aware of historical practices exactly underlined my comment. Prokofiev and Rachmaninoff piano concertos are played slower today than the masters themselves played them; the same is true for Wagner and Strauss operas where we do have timing information over the years.

      I mean, I’m not here to argue with you. Historically Informed Performances may not have even been the best argument here. After all, composers and pianists of Prokofiev’s time had to perform as as fast as they could for recordings to fit in the discs. Rachmaninov had to make extra cuts.

    • @Heather-im5sg
      @Heather-im5sg Před 6 lety +4

      In the case of Prokofiev, he did not need to play as fast as he did. His performance ran about 25 minutes and was presented on 6 sides of 78 rpm records, where each side was about 4 minutes and a half, so he had time to spare.

      You'd be surprised. For example, this is what the super sophisticated Berlin critic Andreas Göbel has to say:
      "Das dritte Klavierkonzert von Sergej Prokofjew enthält aberwitzige Schwierigkeiten - eigentlich genau das Richtige für die chinesische Virtuosenspielerin Yuja Wang. Zu Brahms oder Beethoven hat sie wenig Zugang, aber Prokofjew sollte doch eigentlich ihr Ding sein. Technisch bewältigt sie alles ohne Mühe (so dass sogar - selten in Philharmoniker-Konzerten - schon nach dem ersten Satz applaudiert wird), aber musikalisch bleiben fast alle Wünsche offen.
      "Gerade einmal zwei grundverschiedene Spielarten zeigt sie: Entweder donnert sie in die Tasten oder es wird farblos und nichtssagend. Wo das Konzert mal auf Technik verzichtet, wirkt es hilflos. Das ist ein reines Technik-Abliefern. Als Akrobatik und Artistik kann man das noch akzeptieren, als ernsthafte musikalische Gestaltung nicht. Wie Yuja Wang mit diesen Defiziten eine solche Weltkarriere starten konnte, bleibt ein Rätsel."

    You have to give Stravinsky, Shostokovitch and Prokofiev A for effort, I prefer the calm
    and beauty of baroque music, I love Tchaikovsky, and sit enthralled by this Prokofiev on the edge of my seat
    But would not take it for my desert island disk collection.

    If my preferred P3 is the unsurpassed Argerich/Previn/LSO (it's here on YT on film), I actually liked this. Not so much because of Wang who, as I said, cannot surpass Argerich, but because of the very good, very musical and very responsive and idiomatic conducting and playing by the orchestra. One can hear here Prokofiev's signature wit, playfulness and sarcasm/irony. Wonderful. Previn/Argerich strike me as more serious and sombre, even emotional, all also valid, of course.

      They're rotary trumpets, commonly used in most German/Austrian orchestras. They have a slightly darker sound than piston trumpets at offer some advantages when hitting certain high notes in the form of the pinky levers.

    • @Chrisspher
      @Chrisspher Před 6 lety +5

      Yes, but a top and experienced orchestra and conductor will always slow down the speed a little bit when a soloist is too ambitious and too passionate. The same thing also happened when Mutter was recording the Mendelssohn concerto with Gewandhausorchester accompanied.
