Since 1898 Puerto Rico is a territory of the United States, locals are American citizens, and American travelers can enter the Island without carrying a passport. Nor do U.S. travelers require international calling plans for their phones. The currency used in Puerto Rico is the U.S. dollar.

We live in central New Jersey and are fortunate to have a few very good Puerto Rican restaurants. Even better, we have friends who had abuelas who prepared incredible meals. The abuelas are no longer with us, but we are treated to the occasional meal which includes one of my favorites--Empanadas de Camarones!

Watching your trip to my beautiful island brings joy and tears. I haven’t been there in a long time. I miss it tremendously. The best time to do the walk is early morning. You avoid the crowds and it so peaceful. My suggestion is to go to Plaza de Mercado in Santurce. It not far from Old San Juan take the bus. It very authentic and has a lot of restaurants that the food is amazing. And there’s air conditioning. Thank you for sharing your amazing trip. I need to go back.

Places nowadays are so hot, it's like an actual steam sauna which makes anyone so exhausted after walking around the city. It’s the easternmost island of the Greater Antilles chain, which also includes Cuba, Jamaica and Hispaniola (divided into Haiti and the Dominican Republic). After centuries of Spanish rule, Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States in 1898 and has been largely self-governing since the mid-20th century. Hopefully further down the road other doors to the Far East will open. Hawaii is a great jumping off point, and still on my list of states I've never been through yet.
