    I'd measure from corner to corner before digging to be sure it's square. I know you did the 3,4,5, method, I still like corner to corner.

    The batter boards also allow you to take string lines down to get them out the way why escavating and setting forms and put them back to verify every s correct becuse the reference points are still on batter boards becuse they set back from the actual work area

  • @colleenscottcarmello5103

    So guys, 7:40-7:45ish check out how the greenhouse roof line meets the land's grass line perfectly. Wow. Right where the greenhouse roof meets the greenhouse walls, that line I'm talking about. it is even shaded with the, far away trees, making a seemingly, continuous line. Plays with the eye.. But, guys, that's some great level build if it is level with nature.. Impressive!!! =D

  • @ChristianandFamily
    @ChristianandFamily Před rokem +4

    I always used 2x6 for the batter boards. That way I could mark and label the string locations so I could move them to drill holes, set forms or just general layout. Then have the squared lines available to use again simply by resting the strings back to the marked lines. Batter boards weren't removed until the building was/is framed and squared.
    But hey, good job Sam. Even better by yourself, mostly. (Sorry Angela)

      Thank the LORD I've not had the debilitating foot issues like I did. I wear high work boots all the time now (even when not working) which helps greatly on supporting and reducing the flexing my foot does. The shoes + stopping the supplements I was taking have stopped the problem from progressing. The damage has still been done, and walking is painful with every step, but nothing like I went through last year and nothing bad enough to make me risk surgery. Thanks for asking, you are so kind!

    Just standard profile boards, you can do so much with them, set out trench lines, centre lines, set out brick or pole lines, set them right you can use them as a datum for foundation height, brick work height to DPC, floor height. but remember to set them back far enough away to get plant to be able to excavate. doing it this way you have a fixed datum that you can setup from rather than working out new datum.

    I really appreciate all your videos. I first found you juuuust before Covid. And I dabble in woodworking and laser engraving. So your Samcraft channel was fantastic for me.
    Since then, you moved and branched out with your video library. It's been great for me as well. I've finished (almost) the inside of my shop with insulation and plywood. Your vids served as inspiration.
    Now, we are starting to build a fully enclosed vegetable garden. I am laying out the posts to be square and straight, and wouldn't you know!? Sam has a layout video for me too!
    Keep up the good work. Your vids are always helpful. I hope there many others out there who share my sentiment.
    Best to you and your family as you continue your journey.

    Had u connected the string several feet from the corner of the shop, it would be easy to get a straight line. Then do the other side the same. Measure the same distance from the shop on both lines, you will be straight with the shop and square.

    Marking the string line is accepted practice BUT, you can not untie the string and then tie it back again. All the marks will not be on the same layout again, unless you’ve managed to tension the string exactly as it was before (highly unlikely).

    • @sam-and-angela
      @sam-and-angela  Před rokem +1

      Concrete was just too expensive. The raw material for the slab alone would have been close to $6,000... and that's IF our land was level. Being 20" slope over the 40' length makes a slab out of the question for us. No biggie though.. our stuff won't care. :) We will add gravel inside after it's built to keep it from getting muddy, etc. :)
