Tamiya MF-01X Ford Escort Mk2 Speed Test (TWICE!!!)

  • Hi and welcome to this speed test (or should I say "LACK OF SPEED test!)
We took my Tamiya Ford Escort MkII RC rally car (on the MF-01X chassis) to a local car park to test out it's top speed. The first run was slower than we expected, so we fitted my biggest 2S LiPo and reset the throttle end-point on the stock Tamiya TBLE-02s ESC, hoping for better results. I hope you have fun watching and finding out how we got on!
Many thanks to my top buddy, ‪@robbrennanrc‬ for doing a sterling job on the camera and for adding those wonderfully unique Rob Brennan comments and laughs!
The MF-01X is bog stock except for ball bearings and oil shocks.
The kit comes supplied with the Tamiya Torque Tuned brushed motor.

A fascinating speed test guys. Initially my guess was 16mph, but having watched the first pass I changed to 15mph. Both wrong. Oddly on the second run it looked a little faster, but no 14mph again. Strange. As I've said before though RC's ( especially the slower / silver can ones ) tend to look faster off road and slower on large concrete expanses, but this is a lovely looking car...😃👍🏻👍🏻.

He he.... Great minds think alike, I very nearly used the 'jelly mold' term in that previous message!
Unfortunately with today's cad robots designing cars to strict requirements for safety, fuel economy, reliability etc they are going to all look the same. Aesthetics are no longer a design requirement.... Its now all about mpg, aerodynamics, emissions and how good they perform when you crash them. Hence, they all look the same.
Combine that with a government that's forcing electric eco cars on the masses by pricing us who choose not to comply out of the market..... unfortunately, the golden era of motoring is nearly extinct.
But hey, that's what's good about our hobby eh?..... We can still get to drive original vw beetles, mk2 escorts, Ford f100s, dodge chargers, porsche 959s etc!!!! 🤣 😂
Totally understand regarding the motor, this hobby gets expensive eh?
The superstock rz is delightful if/when you decide that you may wish to invest! It's a great brushed motor that seems to work really well in most of the modern and vintage tamiya models. It really does bring them out of their shell without having to go down the brushless route. We generally still use NIMH's and tble02 's and the superstock is a perfect match!
Wishing you a great week matey! 👍

    • @MarkBryanRC

We certainly do think alike, Yoda San! As for electric "Eco" cars, the bloody things create more CO2 than a decent petrol car until both types of car hit around 400,000 miles! It's a complete sham and a travesty! Almost as bad as when the government was pushing Diesel cars without studying the FACTS! But yeah, at least we can play with miniatures of real decent motors!

Oh don't get me started on that one fella!
I recently had a client literally telling me off for driving my 'polluting' 25 year old e36 beema(a car that has long since paid for itself in the production resources used)
It did make me angry, I had to point out to the Liberal snowflake customer that running a car that old is far better for the environment than their actions of scrapping a perfectly good 8 year old car to buy an electric eco warrior mobil!
A car in which used vast resources to produce(and wasted a perfectly good car that was prematurely scrapped), a car made of much toxic non biodegradable plastics(unlike my metal bodied car that will naturally decompose), a car that's power source is a large battery that currently cannot be recycled anywhere in the world/will catch on fire and not be able to be extinguished in the event of a bad accident, a car in which will put excess strain on an already struggling national grid etc etc!!! 🙄
To conclude my rant the chap looked very lost for words when I asked him where the electric to charge it comes from..... Yep, you guessed it- burning fossil fuels!! 🤣 😂
Trust me, the only electric cars I will be driving will be a Tamiya or a Kyosho!! 🤣 👍

That aside it’s a great looking Mk2 Escort, Tamiya showing how our ole skool car looks which were awesome.
I remember i used a selection of spotlights during my ownership of Fast Fords including - Cibie Oscar’s - Lucas 20-20 or the good ole KC Daylighters …. all of which were fantastic company on the cars for those night time roads & lanes we used to love driving.
I brought this Tamiya kit when it was first released along with others that still require building & painting.

You know Pete, a lot of people say that about the TBLE02! But I can only say as I find, and I've used tons of them and never had a problem. Used 13.5T brushless motors and brushed down as low as 15T and never any heat issues. Very strange! If they come with the kit I use them. Otherwise, like you I'd choose a lower turn spec waterproof ESC! All the best, mate! 😎👍

I totally agree, I've had the same experience with mine. I think the chassis is just a little too narrow and top heavy, causing it to roll with very little provocation. A loose surface lets it slide and not roll, the only way to drive this beauty!

@@MarkBryanRC It's not power that's holding back the speed, it's gearing. The motor is revving out to close to what its free speed would be if just connected to a battery with no transmission to burden it. If you want a higher top speed then the overall gearing will have to be raised, or fit a higher kv motor, or add more volts. Mind you, it's doing a scale 140 mph which is plenty fast enough for a Mark II Escort rally car: they are always short geared too

    • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  Před rokem

@@harryspeakup8452 Thanks, Harry, that's a good point you make! It's easy to raise the gearing on this as the mount holes are slotted. But as you say, even 140mph scale speed is a bit much for a real Escort! Cheers!

Again i understand the point you are making, but seriously, it would be pretty boring to play with if it had scale power. But if that's what you want, you can always turn down the max speed on the transmitter (throttle dual-rate control). Another downside of this model is that it's 4WD 🤣 But you can build it with just RWD if you wish. So you see, if you want, you really can have it totally scale. I just prefer it this way! 😁
