You left out the most important step. Once the load is secure you have to slap it and proudly state “that ain’t goin’ nowhere”. :)

This might seem random, but I was having trouble threading my new ratchet strap and I got a little upset because that’s something I’d have asked my dad to help with, but he passed about 5 years ago. This was the next best thing. Thanks for the concise and clear demonstration! I watched other videos that didn’t actually help but this got me there before the end of the video.

I have been using these for 40 years in trucks with etrac to secure road cases, one thing I have to disagree with is pulling the slack as tight as possible. In my situation if you pull the slack as tight as possible the strap will not spool enough to keep the strap from slipping. the way we avoid this is to yes pull the slack until its tight, but leave a few inch's from the load you are securing. this ensures the strap spools enough times to not slip. this is why sometimes when you travel and go to release the ratchet there is slack and the strap is not holding correctly.

If your load is rigid, leave a little slack and you'll get enough wraps to not slip when you ratchet. If your load is squishy (like a load of branches or a pile of carboard), pull the slack tight before you ratchet, and the squishiness of the load will give enough wraps to have enough friction to hold.
I should've watched this video last week when I hauled 50 feet of gutters and their fascia boards. But it was getting late, so I borrowed some straps from a friend and just tossed them in my SUV and went to Home Depot. When I tried to use them they were threaded wrong and I had to rethread them -- and did it wrong too, of course. I had too much slack to secure the load. It was dusk and getting darker fast. It wasn't a very big or heavy load, so I used 'Red-Neck Ingenuity' and duct-taped the gutters and boards together. Then I secured the load with a set of 5 ft long, heavy-duty Bungie straps instead. They did the job well but I was nervous driving the entire 3 miles home. Thanks for showing me how easy the ratchet straps are to use -- properly!

Thank you. Perfect. Very interesting note about the twist. I drove from UK to Morocco (that time i got lucky with fixing the straps) and the vibration amplified through the car shell was literally deafening. I had to do something! I stuffed towels under the load wedged against the roof bars. Now with this tutorial I gave a little load to take across country and I feel happy that I can finally use the ratchet straps competently

Best video I've seen on the subject - showing how the ratcheting mechanism works at the start of the video is a huge help, rather than just blindly following "do this, then this" type tutorials.

I learned yesterday that I have no idea what I'm doing with ratchet straps. I spent an hour trying to release an over wound ratchet strap (needed pliers!). I vowed to learn how to use one so I'm not in this situation again. Thank you for the close ups, tips and pausing. Very informative video! I'm ready to roll now

I watched this video a while ago and Thank Goodness I saved it. I don't use my Ratchet Straps very often but I'm usually hauling a 3 Ton tractor on my trailer. I bought expensive good quality heavy duty straps that would hold my Tractor in place. I bought the straps about three years ago when I bought the Trailer. Luckily for me I found your video on the day I was going to use them for the first time and watched it as I strapped down my Tractor. I'm so glad I found this video. I watched it again today to refresh my memory and realised at least two of the straps are on wrong. I'll go out to my workshop later and re-strap them. THANK YOU for taking the time and trouble to make and post this GREAT VIDEO. I'm still going to save it for future reference. THANK YOU ACAIN.

I had never had a reason to buy a ratchet strap until now, to hold a split tree together following a storm. The directions on the one I bought at Harbor Freight were absolutely useless. Thank you! I usually leave the ratcheting to my husband but he wasn’t available when our son had to move out of college for the summer. So I left the ratcheting up to my son and his frat friend. What a mess. Thanks to your video, after I pried the twisted stuck webbing out, I was able to use the ratchets correctly- and securely!

I am very happy to have found this "CZcams U(niversity)" video!! I'm a 55 y.o female who felt very much belittled by my Dad recently. When my Dad, whom i admire, said my ratchet straps weren't useful to tie down a bookcase onto the roof rack of his car and a menace to use, i realized it was simply cuz he didn't know how to use them. I then became determined to learn the proper way of using them.

Thank you very much for this video! I've just spent half an hour trying to work out how this is done. Mine came with what I thought was an instruction leaflet in the pack, but was just a safety notice in 12 languages printed in 4 pitch! It's all very well getting the things tight, but getting them undone again...!
Oh we must have gotten the same brand. And I had to break out the magnifying glass even to read them.
Better to open up the ratchet and pass through the middle. So strap comes over the load and through the open ratchet and continues in same direction. This makes it easier pull the strap out when undoing it. I sometimes do 20 at a time on my loads.. and yes twist in the strap stops vibration and also what i call a tattoo mark to painted surfaces etc.
Good try but your directions sucked. Bad spelling and not very clear. I tried to read it but it was hard to comprehend.Leave it to the guy in the Video.If not re-read what you typed and try to type out your directions clear and precise.Not like you hear it in your head.Keep trying!

I have 3 rachets and straps for my canoes but instead bought self tightening straps with knurled strap holders because I could never figure out how the ratches worked! Now I have all I need to tue down my canoes and anything else! What a fantastic video, thank you!!

When you first released it - the release mechanism has an extended handle ‘higher’ than where you inserted your left thumb. I’ve purchased the identical brand & design ratchet, so followed closely.. That higher handle extension allows us to keep our digits further from the ..action. Learned a lot though, well done ~

Well explained. Another tip: once the strap is tensioned and holding something in place you can store the excess free strap length by rolling it into an “O” shape, then flattening it and pass it halfway through the locking handle. So long as there’s not an excessive amount the handle will still lock shut. There are other methods for storing the free ends, but this is pretty reliable. A little oil on the mechanisms from time to time if the ratchets are used on flatbeds / outside. Be mindful of stretch if the webbing gets wet - recheck tension enroute if it’s raining. If your straps have them, the number of black running threads indicates strength rating - i.e. five running threads usually equals five tonnes. Also the black running thread face (it’s only one side) tells you which way the hook ends turn. You’d be amazed how many drivers don’t know any of this.

Wow, found an old, rusted ratchet strap all knotted up in my garage and needed to tie down a ladder in my truck. I was just about to cut the straps and just tie it down with knots, then I found this video. Cleaned it up with some WD40 and followed your instructions. The strap works like a champ now, so tight! Great video, keep on!

It's surprising how many videos on using ratchet straps miss the important steps included in this video. One big omission I've notice that you carefully cover, is releasing the ratchet by pulling in the button ion the ratchet handle, then fully opening the ratchet so that the cam releases the lock on the other half is an essential part most video's miss. Making sure the ratchet is fully closed so it's locked is another important point the you explained very well. Thanks great job!

Thanks so much for such an informative video! About 20 years ago I thought I'd worked out how to use a ratchet strap, but thought you're supposed to thread it a bit and then ratchet the whole length until taut. I struggled with it overfilling and being difficult to release, sometimes pulling back the part that stops it. I knew there must be a better way. Cheers!

At first glance I thought why a video about ratchet straps, because I use them every day to me it's second nature, my 70 yo dad tried to use 1 and couldn't work it out so I helped him and it took 2 or 3 goes to get him to understand. In other words what seems simple to one isn't always simple to another so my conclusion is that is a great idea to make a educational vid on ratchet straps. Dad loves them now and will never go back to rope

I’ve been trying to use one of these at my landscaping job to strap down the lawnmowers in the back of the trailer and I wasn’t able to do it for the life of me because I was never taught how to use one properly and had no knowledge on it whatsoever, so I figured I’d look on CZcams for a good video explaining it and this is perfect. Thank you, I’ve learned a great deal. In Europe when taking a bike on a ferry the deck crew will often throw up a racket strap, you have no idea, it’s down to guess work. Occasionally the deck crew might do it for you but almost cut the saddle in half and it’s almost impossible to release on return to the bike, pressure to depart quickly not blocking access for others departing. The following year you are in the same situation having forgotten how the racket worked from last year, it’s down to guess work again, not any more. Very educational video, well explained.

Thanks very much. I have used so many mechanical devices, but not a ratchet strap. I need to secure a VERY expensive e-scooter (180 lbs) to an electric stair-climbing dolly, in order to transport said scooter, down many flights of stairs. After watching this video I am now able to use my new ratchet straps to secure my killer scooter, while transversing the stairs. Oh my goodness! Thank you so much for this easy to follow video. My husband accumulated several open and closed trailers and was very good with his straps. Unfortunately, he passed quickly 2 years ago and there was so much I wish I could have asked about. Now I can take my 0 turn mower to my mother's house to mow without it sliding all over the trailer. I sent this to another friend who loves it as well. Yes even men were using it incorrectly. Saved this video and have watched it multiple times as a refresher.

Many times I end up just tying a knot in the strap and use it like a rope because it's so difficult to thread. Now I know why it was difficult and I am very happy to see this video.

I bought my first ratchet strap recently, concerned that I might thread it incorrectly, I wrote to the manufacturer (Stanley). As you said, no instructions come with them. They replied that they didn't have any instructions and referred me to CZcams videos. What a sad state of affairs! If it goes wrong, I guess that way they reduce any liability.

They recently started making me work as a Waterspider in an Amazon warehouse dock. No matter how many times the other waterspiders tried showing me how to work one of these things, I could never understand it. Doesn't help that everything's kind of busy.
