AHHH! I love that the river GRABS and tries to pull him down..AND I LOVE YOU KEPT OUR PROPHET OLD! Everyone is turning him into a young ff 'hotman' now xDD I will always prefer anyone that keeps him as an older man.
I love that he comes off sort of as more of a judge? in this.. or at least how he points... And that he has this fearful point? like, he has seen some shit - is afraid, but aint afraid to point to the guilty party

Thank you!!! He lived seven lifetimes, he earned his old age! 😆 I always interpreted that even though he can see into the future, he genuinely didn’t realize that the man in the palace was Odysseus. That is until the outburst at 1:51 then it clicks and he’s just horrified at what’s happened to him and what’s to come

Aaaaaa such a good animatic! The last verse where the prophet is literally pointing at Odysseus as he sings, but him being too blinded by his own rage at the thought of his wife being in danger?? It's just so good!

I really love how you gave tiresias more personality here and showed the emotion that matches with the subtleties in his voice

    Holy gods, this is beautiful
especially in this animatic, the meanings are twofold
since i don't know much of anything going on, both in terms of the characters, the world and the song i'll be assigning things to make explanations easier, and for simplicity sake, he's a small introduction
I took several classes on Videography, Character design, animation and writing, all of which is very helpful when it comes to enjoying, creating and critiquing animation and movies
the first thing we see is a man entering what appears to be the river Styx, for simplicity i'll call this man Dave (because Dave is a cool name) the first moments with Dave show us a few things
he's on a boat, and willingly dives into the water upon seeing the prophet on dry land
upon exiting the water, it clings to him which has several meaning, especially in how it's been drawn, the hands that grip him could be symbolic of his past and his desires, or it could be a lie to keep him where he is, which clearly isn't where he's supposed to be
then we meet the Prophet, who's first line is "i am the prophet with the answers you seek" meaning this character knows what Dave wants to know
"i see past and future running free" is setting up the prophets ability to see time as it is, as it flows, despite existing in it
"there is a world where i help you get home, but that's not a world i know" is setting up alot of very interesting ideas that could be expanded upon in a fuller length movie or similar
we've established that the prophet can see both the past and the future, and as extension i'm assuming that extends to all things living and dead, and the prophet knows that in some world outside of this one, he helps Dave make it back home, but this is not that world, this is not the world where the prophet helps Dave, and immediately sets the prophet as an enemy in the story
the next lines are about Dave, his past and his future, love and hate, a joy and a pain done against Dave by those close to him
now this is where things get even better "i see you on the brink of death" is about Daves future, and is accompanied by an amalgam of hands, that are exactly the same as the water he'd trudged through to speak with the prophet, and with the next line "i see you draw your final breath" the amalgam of said hands goes away, meaning Dave will not die to the water, he will escape this area, even if he doesn't make it far
"i see a man who gets to make it home alive" as Daves face lights up, clearly this is good news "but it's no longer you" also has alot of meanings, but the most poignant of which is, when Dave makes it back home, he is not the same person, forever changed by the horrors that await him down below
this moment also shows us 2 things, Dave and the prophet share many similarities, but are just as different
Daves anger at the prophet is understandable, and his accusing actions are what sets the rest of this conversation into action
the next lines speak of a castle drowning in blood, and people who had long believed that Dave had died, the sudden use of a colour outside whites, blacks and yellow is immediately unnerving to the viewer and sets them on edge for what comes next, and the yellow silhouettes stand out and put the viewer into shock
"i see a wife with a man who is hunting" and it is clear to us that this is Daves wife, and based on the smaller piercing eyes, it isn't Dave... anymore
this "man with a trail of bodies" is what Dave becomes, this is the "it's no longer you"
now you only notice this when going through frame by frame, but you still see it subconsciously, the prophet is slowly moving away from Dave, creating distance, separating himself from the monster Dave will become
the yellow shadows show us more of what's happened, the hands clawing at Dave, the large number of hands from behind, and only 2 from up ahead, what i can assume is his wife
i can't quite decipher what the second shadow means, but it's clear that something had broken under the sunlight, probably caused by Dave or the man that betrayed him, and the final shadow is a visceral one, the betrayal that had sent Dave down to hell, a man being turned against Dave, the swords in his back are the swords of the people
and as the prophet sinks into the shadows, Daves anger wells up, he's already becoming the monster he's doomed to become, and he breaks
outside the fantastic song, the visuals only serve to enhance it, and it sets up a character who is both protagonist and antagonist, a broken man seeking redemption that will never come, and it's gorgeous

HOLY MOLY! Thank you so much for this comment. I highly recommend the rest of epic the musical, all of it is loosely based on the Odyssey.
A running theme through the musical is Odysseus’ (Dave’s) guilt over the deaths he has caused, mainly the deaths of his crew. At this point, only 42 are left of the original 600.
The song before this one, “The Underworld” is just haunting, the dead crew call out for his help and question why Odysseus has allowed his own guilt to get them killed.
The first set of shadows correlates to the second set to a degree!
For the first: 0:40 and 1:57
Memories of Odysseus and his wife!
After this song, Odysseus comes to the conclusion that his guilt is what’s caused them to suffer, he decides he is going to do anything to get home. He is later confronted by his right hand man, saying “You miss your wife so bad you'd trade the lives of your own crew”.
      Second: 0:45 and 2:00
These are things that have killed and will kill the crew. The cyclops and later Helios (god of the sun).
      Third: 0:48 and 2:03
Eurylochus, Odysseus’ right hand man, feels like his pleas to leave Circe’s island are ignored. Building more resentment. He eventually leads a mutiny against Odysseus.
The creeping realization at what Odysseus has become and what he will be in the future is shown so well in the music. The prophet is blind, and I interpreted that as he looks through his past he sees the old Odysseus. Truly not recognizing the man in the palace until Odysseus’ rage arrives. It fully clicks and the prophet is just horrified by what he’s become. I absolutely love the horror and desperation in the prophet’s voice (Mason Olshavksy is a phenomenal actor).
This musical is SO good. The running motifs, character instrumentation and descriptive dialogue are just top notch. Again, If you haven’t listened to the full thing yet, I highly recommend it.

i love the look of hope on Odeysseus' face that falls when the prophet says he can't help him, and i also enjoy Odeysseus just collapsing in despair once the prophet leaves. good job 👍

Ooo! It really depends on life stuff and how motivated I am.
If I am remembering correctly, this took around 7 weeks start to finish.
Probably with an average of an hour every night (some nights I skipped drawing, and plenty of nights I just worked on other things. I have around 15 projects right now that I am floating between depending on my motivation. This one I was really excited about so it got done relatively quickly for me.
I edit as I go along, occasionally changing elements after I realize I don’t like how it looks in motion or in the lineup of scenes. So there’s some time that is there, but wasn’t shown in the final product.
My black swan video that’s around 7 minutes took about 11 months with the same work ethic. I did lose about a minute and a half of work due to my tablet just nuking itself for no apparent reason. So that added maybe a month.
Cast no shadow is almost 4 minutes and that took around 12 weeks. But I was also in the process of learning how my new editing app worked.
I hope that kinda answered your question!
