As a songwriter, I can’t think of another song in my youth that taught me how to pay attention to the art of storytelling, combined with orchestration, progressions and having the music take you on that trip, no matter where the storyline took you, you enjoyed the ride. You actually danced to a very very sad and dark story of the groping of a nightclub dancer by a thug that shot her boyfriend who was only trying to defend her honor, she falls into a deep depression and is literally stuck in time, for the rest of her life and every time we play this song, Lola is still stuck. This is one of the MANY reason that I love Barry Manilow. Rest In Peace to my sister Beverly who introduced me to him and all that great 70’s soft yacht rock music. The best times of my life.
Thanks for the nice write up. I grew up in a foreign country and used to love this song a fabulously written and performed melancholy disco-y. When I moved to US at the age of 30, one day this masterpiece and i clicked! Suddenly i realized how tragic its story is, characters are so real - kinda reminded me of Godfather. In terms of story telling, this song, with no wasted words or seconds, yet very catch and yeah danceable, tops my list. Masterpiece in my book.

You know, in all these years, I never paid attention to the lyrics of this song. The only thing I remembered is "at the Copa, Copacabana" and "her name is Lola," that's about it. I remember dancing to it because it's a catchy, rhythmic and upbeat song. But man, I just paid attention to the lyrics as I was singing them to my cocketeil--who I happened to name, Lola. And boy was I surprised at how depressing the lyrics are. Poor Lola. :(
Try reading the lyrics. The music is upbeat with what I believe is a Cuban rhythm or beat, but the lyrics are about dancing, murder and becoming lost in alcohol.

For the longest time for some reason, I thought the line "She lost her youth and she lost her Tony, now she's lost her mind" meant she had lost her Tony Award. As in, she had once been successful enough as a performer that she had won a Tony. Now she's old and addled and literally lost her Tony. I guess I didn't really pay enough attention to realize it was her guy's name.
I got a theory: maybe Lola was shot, and the reason she never changed out of her feathered dress and nobody did anything about it was because she died and returns to haunt the Copacabana as a ghost.
This song is actually sad, there are many show girls who had the prime of their life in the 1950s+ but fell into poverty and now just have their memories/pictures to reminisce about.
I'm here tonight because a few hours earlier, when I was still at work, the radio stopped playing through the PA system and myself and two other co-workers began singing this song, WORD FOR WORD, from beginning to end. Thank you, Barry Manilow, for putting out a great song that, over 40 years later, we can still enjoy and have fun listening to and singing.

I have no idea what the fuck you just said but this song is about a showgirl named Lola who meets a bartender named Tony at the Copacabana(a club) and they fall in love. A man named Rico comes into the bar and calls Lola over after she finishes dancing, Rico 'goes a bit too far'(most likely touching Lola in a way she didn't want to be touched) and Tony tries to fight Rico off. Rico ends up shooting Tony, and Lola is left alone. Thirty years pass and Lola is still at the Copacabana, though as the decades change the Copacabana changes too. The Copacabana no longer has the exotic theme and it's now 'a disco'. Lola is depressed over losing her love and her youth and becomes an alcoholic, slowly losing her mind. See you can see why Johnny Blade called it dark.

I didn't hear it again until now : I was seeing a video of Rio de janeiro about the fiesta of the new year 2022 in Copacabana; and so I run seeking for this song to hear it again. I was astonished by the meaning of the song because it reminded me a similar story which happened in my city Meknes Morocco at the time this song was famous (late seventies). An old blond woman used to walk in the streets in red clothes. Someday a student asked our teacher if he knew something about her. And this later told us that she used to be once the most beautiful girl in our city, and that she used to work in a bar. She had plenty of money and success among men; but with time she lost her mind due to alcohol and drugs...

Man I have an awesome 1st memory of this song. My dad played this song on his cassette in the car when I was a kid and I just fell in love with the beat and I asked him to play it again and again lol 😂 ❤
My generation of music was the mid 1970’s to the mid 1980’s. I remember this fantastic song from all those years ago like yesterday. They played it tons of times over the airwaves back in the 1970’s. What different times those were compared to these days. I consider myself very fortunate to hearing songs like these back in the 1970’s.
*Song begins* Me: This sounds happy and upbeat. *When Tony gets shot* Me: That escalated quickly. *When Lola becomes a depressed drunk* Me: That got dark quickly.
This is my favorite song which hunts me since I have learnt the sad story behind the happy music !!! Was my favorite for the rhythm and is my favorite for everything that compose it…♥️ brings me all the feelings a human can feel 😂😍🫣😳😡😱🥺😭😵💫
Maybe Tony shot Rico and didn’t win the court case so he ended up getting 30 years in prison, I mean it says she lost him but that doesn’t mean he died, maybe she’s just waiting there for him and wearing the same dress so she can be recognized when he walks in, I mean it’s been 30 years so
Mate their was blood and a single gunshot. No one knew who shot who. All theory s are hypothetical therefore your hypothesis on the outcome of the gun fight is non valid
I heard this at a Minor League Baseball game (Clearwater Threshers) and came to hear the rest of the song. Did not expect it to get as dark as it is did with such catchy lyrics! :O
I heard this song for the first time while on a Caribbean cruise. I loved it so much when I got home I really listened to it and wow! What a story teller. I was buzzed and dancing my ass off to this song on the cruise and now I feel like a crazy guy haha
I got here because one day when I was in bed my dad sat down and then he just started saying "her name was lola" out of know where and then just started singing the song
The recording was used as incidental music in the 1978 film Foul Play, which starred Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn, and has been featured in over a dozen other films since. "Copacabana" debuted on Billboard magazine's Top 40 chart on July 7, 1978, and peaked at number 8. It has also reached the Top 10 in Belgium, Canada, France and the Netherlands. Internationally, the song is Manilow's third-greatest hit.[3] The track was his first gold single for a song he recorded and released.[4] Additionally, the song earned Manilow his first and only Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance in February 1979.[5] en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copacabana_(song)
I'm going to make this into a musical! They did it with Mamma Mia...why not this one! This tells a very sad story but this generation can really appreciate it!!
In the 1942 film “Now, Voyager,” as their cruise ship glides into Rio Harbor, Gerry utters to Camille, “Copacabana, there’s music in the word.” Surprisingly, 36 years later in 1978, Barry Manilow’s song was released, echoing Gerry’s sentiments. It’s a captivating connection between reel and reality.
This is a great extended version! The percussion breakdown in the middle is so good. People think of Barry Manilow as being the King of Cheez, and I'm not saying he's not, but this is a totally rockin' tune with an unforgettable story-lyric, like the old murder ballads, but set to a Cuban style groover. Fantastic session musicians and there is some very atypical, for pop, chord changes and modulations and things going on in the build plus pretty fat, stacked harmonies in the BVs. It's a great song that pulls off perfectly the conceit of its homage to different genres of music and lyrical content.

With yellow feathers in her hair and a dress cut down to there
She would merengue and do the cha-cha
And while she tried to be a star Tony always tended bar

“Copacabana”* (1978) earned Barry Manilow his FIRST AND - believe it or not - ONLY Grammy award (Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male), his FIRST gold single for a piece he composed, his FIRST international hit record, and the FIRST song to inspire projects in other media (a made-for-TV movie, a stage musical). 💙🎼💜
* Also known as “Copacabana (At The Copa)”.

This songs brings back so many memories of my highschool days. Such a genius of a songwriter and a great singer as well 😊
Hermano, que buena canción, me hace sentir muy bien
My generation of music was the mid 1970’s to the mid 1980’s. I remember this fantastic song from all those years ago like yesterday. They played it tons of times over the airwaves back in the 1970’s. What different times those were compared to these days. I consider myself very fortunate to hearing songs like these back in the 1970’s.
*Song begins* Me: This sounds happy and upbeat.
*When Tony gets shot* Me: That escalated quickly.
*When Lola becomes a depressed drunk* Me: That got dark quickly.
Exactly
Well, that got dark
Lola should listen to Fifth Harmony’s song “ That’s My Girl”
Private: ooh i like this song
Kowalski: it never gets old
Skipper: it does have a catchy hook
This is my favorite song which hunts me since I have learnt the sad story behind the happy music !!! Was my favorite for the rhythm and is my favorite for everything that compose it…♥️ brings me all the feelings a human can feel 😂😍🫣😳😡😱🥺😭😵💫

😩👌
Stan you old bean!
Maybe Tony shot Rico and didn’t win the court case so he ended up getting 30 years in prison, I mean it says she lost him but that doesn’t mean he died, maybe she’s just waiting there for him and wearing the same dress so she can be recognized when he walks in, I mean it’s been 30 years so
TheReal CloroxBleach That’s a pretty convincing theory. 👍
I love it
That would be a twist.
This made me feel just as sad ad the lyrics do 😭
Mate their was blood and a single gunshot.
Is the whistle after the line "he called her" signifying that Rico whistled at her?!....wow!this song is so good!
No I didn't come here from Friends. I typed in "Copacabana" expecting travel vlogs on the beach...but cool song. 😂👌🏾

I LOVE Foul Play -Dudley Moore and Burgess Meredith had bit parts 🤣🤣🤣, I was too young for the movie, but I loved it then and now .Esme the snake❣
I was almost named Lola. This song is literally the reason why I’m not.
Ripppp My name is Lola
Probably your parents didn't want you ending up in a club down in old Soho where they drink champagne that tastes just like cherry cola.
Good name

Imagine almost getting named lola but you get stuck with Ashleigh
Tragic lyrics in a so beautiful song !
I remembered this song today travelling through Copacabana beach, NSW, Australia, must have been the 70’s when I heard the song
Ross supporting Rachel in Friends while she's singing this song brought me here
Despite the joyful and cheerful melodies in this song, the lyrics contains a great sadness in it. What a Legendary song 💜
Descubrí esta canción cuando mi mamá y yo íbamos en el carro escuchando la radio y dejó esta canción y me encantó el ritmo

I just listen to the lyrics of this song. Holy mackerel! Its really sad.poor lola.
I'm going to make this into a musical! They did it with Mamma Mia...why not this one! This tells a very sad story but this generation can really appreciate it!!
I’m Cuban and this song is embedded into my very soul.
The lyrics: The love of her life was murdered and now she's an old depressed drunk
The music: 💃🎶🕺🎵🕺🎶💃
In the 1942 film “Now, Voyager,” as their cruise ship glides into Rio Harbor, Gerry utters to Camille, “Copacabana, there’s music in the word.” Surprisingly, 36 years later in 1978, Barry Manilow’s song was released, echoing Gerry’s sentiments. It’s a captivating connection between reel and reality.
So nostalgic! Love it, Barry!
“Oh! I like this song!”
“It never gets old.”
“It does have a catchy hook.”
Diana Trimble Cheese is an excellent source of protein and fat.
