V-O iOS Mail app shows unread emails when there are none
Sonja: Hi, Sonja from Apple ToolBox here with you today.
Sonja: I check my email all the time, so when the mail app isn’t working; I am really off my game.
Sonja: One of my pet peeves with mail is when it shows unread emails even though there aren’t any! Ugh….
Sonja: What I’m talking about is when you see that red notification above your mail icon that tells you how many emails haven’t been read.
Sonja: But then you open your mailbox and what, there aren’t any unread emails. What’s up with that?
Sonja: Naturally, I turned to Apple ToolBox for some tips to get my mail back in working order.
Sonja: So here are some of the tips that worked for me.
Sonja: So first things first. Let’s check to make sure you really don’t have any unread emails.
Sonja: To do this, open any browser and check your email accounts through the browser instead of through your mail app.
Sonja: Check and see if there are any emails showing up as unread. Use Search to find them.
Sonja: If some emails do show up here as unread, mark them as read.
Sonja: Now go to the mail app and see if that fixed the problem.
Sonja: Hopefully this one worked for you. If not, let’s restart the device and check again.
Sonja: If that still doesn’t work, let’s disable the mail settings and restart the mail app.
Sonja: Now, go back to Settings and select your mail accounts and enable them
Sonja: Exit Settings and open the mail app.
Sonja: You might have to perform these steps a couple of times until they stick. Don’t ask me why. Apple quirks, what else can I say?
Sonja: If this error happens a lot, consider hiding the unread mail notification
Sonja: To hide unread mail notifications, go to Settings, Choose Notifications, and Select Mail. Disable Allow Notifications.
Sonja: I hope these tips help you get your mail app working as usual.
Sonja: Let us know in the comments if you like this. Also, check out the link in the description to our article for more tips on mail workarounds.
Sonja: Thanks for watching this video and remember to subscribe to Apple ToolBox to get all our latest videos.
Sonja: I’ll catch up with you later!

These tips helped me out--I had a bunch of unread emails that I knew I already had previously read. The browser tips was the one that helped me. Love that Sonja! Great voice with clear instructions. Thanks Sonja. And thank you AppleToolBox (ATB)!!!!

Had this issue with gmail showing 1 email unread but didn’t see it on the gmail website. But I went through and selected all emails (even ones not being shown) for all my tabs and marked all as read and finally worked!

Excellent video and much appreciated. Suggestion 2 about deactivating/reactivating the mail button via settings resolved the issue.

I had only one e-mail that kept showing as unread even though I've read it. So this is what I did; I just forwarded the e-mail to another account then deleted the original. So that is another solution. However, on a whim, I went into the trash folder and moved it back to my inbox, and the "unread" notice is no longer there on the original e-mail so that is second solution, but obviously is useful if you have just a few giving you issues.

Variation on that theme: there really are unread emails showing in my ipad’s inbox (but not on webmail) However, no matter how many times I open them they remain “unread” unless I select and manually mark them unread.

I was so annoyed at the number of notifications. You pinpointed the issue and solved it. Thank you. You rock! I'm new to IOS (I only got an iPhone because my kids promised me they would Facetime with me, and they do.) I'm now a subscriber to AppleToolBox. :-)

This worked great. I forgot I had another inbox because I don’t use that email much and there was my unread message that showed up after I turned off mail for my main account.

I get this a bit. I had thousands on my regular accounts. I must have gotten rid of 60,000 emails. I was showing 42,000 instead of around 5,000. What a pain.

It also didn’t work for me. You could go to your notification settings and select mail and turn off badges. If the only thing that’s bugging you is the red bubble on the app. Also sorry I’m 6 months late

None of these worked for me. I did not delete the app however since I didn’t want to risk losing info.
Here is what did work and it took all of 10 seconds.
I went into my iCloud inbox(offending ghost mail location) select all, move to trash then went to trash select all and moved back to inbox. Ghost gone.
