    I'm a substitute teacher and if teachers gave me HALF of the info you have in that binder I would feel so blessed. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of detail and thoroughness in sub plans. imagine your sub has never even set foot in your building before, and explain things accordingly. because I often have never set foot in the building before, and even individual teachers within a school are so so different. I am always confused about SOMETHING.
    in addition, ~please~ talk to your students about respecting subs. substitute teachers are still teachers. the students and the subs need to be clear about behavior expectations!

    2 things that are HEAVEN for a sub and I RARELY if ever see them.
    1 - a current seating chart
    2 - a student roster with photos of each child. (This is exceptionally nice and prevents kids from lying about who they are.)
    Can I also say, substituting is a disrespected job. It sure would be nice if the staff were friendly, helpful, and welcoming. I've seen entire lunch tables cleared out to stay away from subs, as well as teams who should be welcoming and offering help scatter to the wind. I'm a really good sub, and I can handle any situation that comes up. But God help those subs who are not prepared or don't really know what they're doing.

    This gives me flashbacks to when I was 22, fresh out of college and walking into high school classes with NO sub plans. No rosters, nothing. 😬 Let’s just say that I learned really quickly not to pass around a blank piece of paper to take attendance. But, on the positive side, it taught me in my own classroom to always leave detailed information for my subs. 👍🏻 These are great tips, especially about setting an alarm to remind yourself to update the folder throughout the school year.

  • @wordiebirdie
    @wordiebirdie Před 5 lety +3

    I actually don’t mind making sub plans!! I have a template so it makes it really easy to fill in the blanks for whole group time and center time. It’s also helpful to have a substitute that you always use. Also, it’s great to keep in mind that if you (the teacher) had to write a note about your day everyday, it would probably look a lot like a sub’s note. One lady that always subs for me actually has her own sub note paper that is carbon copy paper!!! I think that is brilliant because she can keep a copy for herself and one for me.

    Each teacher at our school had to make a sub binder years ago. Of course now it's up to us to keep it updated just as you suggested. Another good point, my team and I also made a week's worth of lessons (basic/generic/review) along with 25 copies of each to be "housed" in that sub binder. This way if we had an unforeseen emergency and didn't have lesson plans or sub plans we could use those as a standby until we were able to get sub plans prepared or lessons from our co-teachers to help out. Hope this gives another idea to add to your own sub binder. One never knows when an emergency/accident happens and god bless it never does!

  • @philbeer314
    @philbeer314 Před 5 lety +2

    OMG! I cannot stress how much likes I want to give your video. It is one they should show all teachers! As a current substitute, I nodded my head so much with your various tips, wishing the teachers I sub for could just listen. I do understand things come up last minute, but the majority of the jobs I've accepted were at least a few days in advance, so they should have that time to be prepared. (Maybe if all teachers were subs first, they'd understand the little things that help make a day more smoothly.)
    I think one thing I would alter on your tips is in regards to behavior - if a student has a known issue, it is helpful to know that (like if they can be violent or on a behavior plan). I know that with legal things, not all teachers can share 504 and IEP info, but if it can impact learning, or a test needs to be modified, or maybe the student speaks little English and often works with another student, those type of things are useful for us to at least be aware of.
    Also, I love how you put when your aide comes in. There are so many times when aides would enter the room to work with a group, or someone pulls a kid, or the kids are telling me they go somewhere, and the teacher made zero mention of this. It's frustrating to have that unexpected interruption, and you're not always sure the kid is telling the truth.
    We don't have access to laptops for the two districts I sub in, unless the teacher has left their laptop and provided a password (rarely the case). We may have access to a document camera/projector, but that is about it. Knowing that all subs aren't tech-savvy, I'd also suggest printing the powerpoint slides you want them to show, just in case technology isn't able to be used.
    Lastly, again, a thousand likes on the early finisher tip. Not knowing anything about what is or isn't allowed, my default is typically 'read a book'. If you are aware of options, student behavior is better managed. And, if time on the computers is allowed, making sure the sub knows what is, and isn't allowed, is also helpful info to leave, so the kids aren't trying to pull a fast one on you (like, can they really go on youtube?).
    Just a few extra notes, but overall, great advice for teachers. (I actually took an education course on classroom management, and in it the instructor had us create a 'sub binder', so thank you for your templates, as they made figuring out what details to put in seem not so daunting.)

    I just graduated with my teaching license and have been subbing so much the past few months. I wish teachers followed these tips! I have a feeling that if I subbed for you it would be a breeze compared to some teachers 😂 the detailed sub plans are SO helpful; even if it seems overkill, I personally prefer to be given more info than necessary than to be given not enough info. I personally like to bring early finisher activities in my bag in case the teacher doesn’t have anything available. I like to print out word searches, Rebus puzzles, and coloring pages for the various age groups that I teach and it works so well. I’ve subbed from elementary to 8th grade and every grade level has something fun to do when they’re done. I let them have choices as to what kind of activity they want to complete and it has saved my life while subbing!

    As a substitute teacher (or CRT as we are known as in Australia) I can only hope that the teachers leave this kind of information for me! You are amazing!

    I have a similar system. I also leave the student work in numbered/ labeled sheet protectors in the same binder... it’s all in one place! And behavior reflection sheets are located in the back.😏😑

    What helps her, is that the subscribers are probably most of us at "Texas Teachers of Tomorrow" getting certified, they reference the videos.

    As a sub I cannot agree more with leaving more work than just worksheets. I was in a middle school class recently where the teacher left MULTIPLE packets to be completed...most kids didn't get through even the first packet because they were bored and I don't blame them!

    I enjoy your channel.
    You might want to put the emergency info in at the front of your binder so it’s easier to
    Find. 🌞

    I love this video. So much good info. Prior to becoming a teacher I was a sub and one tip I always give teachers who have a tight daily schedule is to build in time at the start of class for the sub and the kids to gwt to know each other. Just 5 or 10 minutes to allow the sub to start connecting, which makes the sub's life so much easier and it helps students behavior. As a sub I sometimes skipped the first exercise in the sub plan in order to take time to connect with the students.

    Most schools now use the term Guest Teacher instead of substitute. Studies have found that when the teacher is referred to as a Guest, they are treated better by students, teachers, staff, admin and parents. It is the concept that when a guest is visiting you should treat them well and make sure you inform them of the things that they need to know, and be on your best behavior. These Guest Teachers have university degrees and many are retired teachers. These guests agree to teach a class on what amounts to very short-notice and they need to be treated very respectfully by all.

    I really like the donut management! I know I commented about this last week, and I think this is a great, whole class, management, that doesn’t involve competition! And it’s cute!

    I tell you what’s exciting and that’s subbing in a middle-school computer class only to discover the state website on which ALL THE ASSIGNMENTS are posted is down. I ended up borrowing a library book from a student in one class and reading aloud to them. Since it was first block, on a Monday, none of them even had assignments from other classes to work on. Fortunately the website came back online a couple of hours into the day, though it kept disappearing sporadically. Absolutely maddening, and I felt bad for the students.
