Freezing your bag of rice as soon as you bring it home from the store and leaving it in the freezer for at least four days will kill the adult bugs and possibly their eggs. (freezer time may vary upon the research you do) It’s your personal choice what you fill your gnomes with. Just have fun making them!

You can also mix some food-grade diatomaceous earth in with the rice and it will kill any type of bugs and their eggs. It is non-toxic and I use it all the time. If it is windy, I cover my mouth when applying it because it is a fine powder. Also, I mix it with water and use it as a spray.

Started making these for this Christmas. Very easy to make. I did use wood noses and less beard to show the shirt underneath. Also glued them to a wood slice so they stand up forever. I used my own old white socks! Four cups of rice was perfect. Had to order the little rubber bands from Amazon, but they really work great. Added the jingle bell and I am really pleased with how they turned out. Again, her directions are easy to follow and you can keep the cost down by making the beards a little smaller.

Instead of new socks I used items from the thrift shop: white sports socks; upcycled sweaters sleeves for the body and the hat.I even found a piece of fur for the beard. I used a sewing machine to construct the clothing pieces but they could be sewn by hand too. Actually one sweater could make many gnomes. Very cute.

I watched a gazillion of these “how to make a gnome“ videos and yours is the first one that has ever emphasize the need to reinforce the rubber band, and you do it without using hot glue! You make a perfect example/argument for why you do this and you were absolutely correct, the rubber band will the grain, and glue will harden so that won’t necessarily work. Tying a string is ingenious!

This is an excellent project for those of us who are on a tight budget. I know that she said that the faux fur is expensive, but you could find it at a thrift store. Either as part of something else, or in the spot where they have bits and pieces of material etc., also the socks, as well as other items that you may not have on hand. Sometimes it's possible to find these items brand new, still in the original packaging, for a fraction of the original price! Taking advantage of the dollar stores is an excellent idea too. You can add things like feet, spectacles, as well as creating girl gnomes by putting hair in the back, to start with, or maybe make a couple of yarn braids (also taking advantage of the thrift store for materials). I enjoyed this tutorial, helped me get into the holiday spirit a little bit! May your Holidays be as good as they possibly can for all of us, this has been a difficult year for all people no matter what you believe!

Love, Love, Love this. Thank you to other people for suggesting alternate items to fill him with. Rice is at a premium with people stocking up, so your suggestions help. I can't wait to make this little gnomes.

Soooo cute. Love this... Put rice in freezer for a few days and than add a bay leaf, bugs detest them. Like the cinnamon sticks and cloves, drown out the bay leaf smell, although I like the smell of bay leaf. Great tutorial :)

This is adorable and a quick an easy craft. I’m making them for nieces and nephews and their spouses for Christmas this year. I didn’t know about the bug issue but will put my rice in the freezer now since I’m not ready to make them yet. Thank you for the great inspiration.

So very cute. I am going to get my granddaughter to help me make some as gifts for Christmas. She is 14 and a big help. Arthritis and joint pain make crafting a challenge, but I am fortunate to have her help. Thank you!
