My First Mammogram || Mayim Bialik

  • Hey, it's Mayim, and I recently had the "rite of passage" of experiencing my first ever mammogram. A mammogram screening is an important and necessary procedure for women's health (though it's worth noting that men can also get breast cancer, and should be getting regular screenings as well!). I was nervous about going, so I made a video diary to document step-by-step what the appointment is like in case there are other people nervous about receiving a mammogram like I was.

    My mother and grandmother both died from breast cancer, so I've been getting mammograms since I was 35. I'm almost 50 now and no signs of cancer. I know they are uncomfortable, but they are vital and necessary. Thank you, Mayim, for being so honest about your fears and anxieties. It's a scary thing, being confronted with the possibility of cancer.

    Greetings! Breast cancer survivor here! One thing I had a mammo tech tell me was that sometimes it helps to slightly bend your knees. It can alleviate some of that pulling sensation you may experience in the upper chest. It worked for me!
    Also, I'm here to let everyone know, breast cancer is super scary, but it's not always a death sentence. I had a lumpectomy, 20 sessions of radiation, and now I take a hormone blocker. I have a less than 10% recurrence probability. GO GET YOUR PILLOWS PANINI'D!

    Thanks for putting this information out there. It's not a pleasant experience for women but it can be a life-saver. 5 years ago I put off having my yearly mammogram for 3 months but then my doctor wouldn't renew my regular meds until I did. They found a small area which turned out to be a rare, fast-growing, malignant breast tumor. Lumpectomy and radiation took care of it but if I had waited another year my prognosis might not have been so good. 5 years cancer free this coming September! If at all possible, get your mammogram!

    At the end when you talk of people who don’t have insurance, I think about all the women who don’t have insurance and who do not get it addressed, who eventually have a rotting breast that falls off. They eventually end up in the hospital dying of cancer that has spread to all of their parts… Which costs a lot more than what it would have cost if somehow she could’ve gotten some kind of care before it turned into this metastasized horror. I’m so grateful my mom had everything done when she did before things get worse in healthcare. Thank you again for sharing!

      @ILOLnumber1 Před 5 lety

      Thanks Maree! I'm relieved to hear that, but now I'm also confused. The impression I got based on the very last part of this video is that it's not free. @mayimbialik mentions that she had to pay for it and will be submitting it to her health insurance provider and she is in her 40s, and has breast cancer in her family history.

    • @pinkbutterflies1679
      @pinkbutterflies1679 Před 5 lety

      Gen Smiley I’m not sure why a millionaire and yes she is one google how much she makes per episode of her TV show and the others she has done. Why wouldn’t she have private health insurance I don’t know. Maybe her doctor didn’t think she needed one, IDK. I’m just tired of rich people Hollywood stars and the media who aren’t middle class telling people from different countries we don’t or never had free insurance for the poor and elderly we do and we did before Obama Care. . Most large company’s offer insurance but some people don’t feel it’s necessary to have until they get sick and really see they need it. Yes some families with one income can’t afford it but they can cash pay and it’s affordable. “My woman’s center” only charges $100.00 for the mammogram and exam and blood test. A little pricey but not bad. But we have free clinics that do your one year exam for a small fee, it goes by your income. Don’t believe everything you hear from these people. It’s all about money. She gets paid to do these UTube video’s. Plus lots of free stuff from companies.

    • @ILOLnumber1
      @ILOLnumber1 Před 5 lety

      I don't see anything wrong with people get money and free stuff for their YT channel. Especially if it's reaching a lot of people and helping them in some way. Regardless of how much or how little money you make elsewhere, maintaining a CZcams channel is a lot of work. So just like any other job, I think you should get compensation for your work.

    • @pinkbutterflies1679
      @pinkbutterflies1679 Před 5 lety

      Gen Smiley That’s not really what I’m saying I’m talking about insurance. Nothing to do with her channel. Just that insurance is free to low income people in the U.S. always has been it covers everything, Including her mammogram why she said she would submitting it to her insurance company makes zero sense. She’s rich,she can afford to pay for it out of her pocket. Plus the cash price for a mammogram is cheap. She must be taking about people in third world countries who can’t afford to get on.

    Because my mom had breast cancer, my mammograms started when I was 34 and now at 38 I've had at least 7 of them thanks to things showing up as "questionable" that all turned out to be fine. I'm planning a preventative double mastectomy when I turn 40. Ladies, it's nerve wracking, but mammograms are not nearly as dramatic or painful as you think. Go get one. Get one.

    • @shawnaginther1987

      The only reason you get a Mastectomy is because you have DCIS cells that need removing. Talk to your doctor first.

    Hi Mayim, thanks for sharing. Lots of women are afraid to have a mammogram. I live in the United Kingdom. We have a wonderful heath care. So true! They treat them like dough. I'm 31 years old with a long history of breast cancer in my family, so I've already had like 3 mammograms done and they're not fun. But this is so important to help catch and treat cancer and more women should have access to this test. I'm lucky because in Chile, even though it's not the best health care system, we do have access to free mammograms if we can't afford them and that's very helpful. Thank you for doing this, awareness is key

    So proud of you. As a short round woman I can honestly say for me it feels like in swinging from the machine by my breast. They gave me short stool to stand on the first time. I have had 3 scans at different points in the last 10 years. Every time I get a tiny bruise close to my armpit. I wish this was considered essential heath care. In Ontario if you have it done before 50 it is not covered under our healthcare. After 50 once every other year is covered.

    Ultrasound is an imaging test that sends high-frequency sound waves through the breast and converts them into images on a viewing screen. There is no radiation involved. ... Ultrasounds are sometimes recommended for women with dense breasts because it can be harder for mammograms to detect cancer in dense breasts.
