  • NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT INTENDED - (Capitol 5353-B) From the Capitol Tower in Hollywood, the session for this classy double-sider in late December 1964 displays yet another fantastic Girl Pop arrangement by a young David Gates. While he is unfortunately most known by his success with the group BREAD, the wealth of material he wrote, produced, arranged as well as sang on in the decade prior to the formation of that Soft Rock band is astounding. When released in early January 1965, the A-side of this Jody Miller disc, which is a David Gates composition entitled, 'Never Let Him Go' is a dreamy and absolutely stunning production and probably one of the best singles Miss Miller issued while at Capitol. Gates would also arrange another beautiful version of the song later in the year with Glenn Yarbrough on RCA Victor and another stellar version by Frank Gorshin on A&M in 1966.
'Be My Man', the flipside, is presented in it's first incarnation and would be recorded a few months later again with David Gates arranging on a magnificent Spectoresque version by fourteen year old, Suzy Wallis on RCA Victor.
This outing of 'Be My Man' by Jody Miller is one that is so good that it no doubt could have been easily issued on it's own as another A-side rather than relegated to the backside. Jody Miller's signature big voice tackles this Girl Pop tune flawlessly and L.A.'s 'Wrecking Crew' are in fine form on the percussive, horn-filled backing track along with the GIRLFRIENDS (Gloria Jones, Carolyn Willis, Nanette Williams) on background vocals.

Wow; written by Mike Post; future '80s giant of TV ("Rockford Files") scoring work.

Came back here to listen and enjoy this Jody single with David Gates as arranger and conductor...by the way, I located Jody's version of "To Sir With Love" on an Australian CD compilation. If you're interested, you can hear it on youtube. Thanks!

    Jennifer,
The flip is entitled, 'Never Let Him Go'.
The only version of 'To Sir With Love' that I know of is by Lulu, issued in the USA on Epic in 1967.

Hello Anthony - Love your wonderful playlist. Do you have 'Never Let Him Go'?
If so could you please upload it. I have searched everywhere on CZcams but cannot find it.
Absolutely brilliant song which I haven't heard in years.

Capitol recorded & released a version of "To Sir With Love" by Jody Miller exactly the same week as the LuLu version. It was pressed and distributed to record stores, but recalled in a few days because it was found Capitol had not obtained copyright clearance from the movie company- who wanted Lulu's version available exclusively. The Jody Miller arrangement with the Wrecking Crew is good, but arguably the Lulu version has a better arrangement. Jody Miller's version (essentially never released until 2019) Here: czcams.com/video/axipjPJfWFw/video.html

As both this version & that of Suzy Wallis were produced by David Gates I wonder which came out first. I prefer the Wallis version.

Hey Anthony, do you have the actual single? Is "To Sir With Love" on the other side? If so, would you please upload it? This is excellent. Jody and David both have Oklahoma roots.
