I don't think my logic board is dead, but if that component specifically were to stop working, would I just be completely out of luck? As I understand it, a new disc drive would not work without your old logic board, so would that be the case?

Yes if your logic board is dead you cant do a drive replacement. The one solution that currently exists is desoldering the controller chip from the board to a new logic board.
