Possible Neutral Milk Hotel/Jeff Mangum demo leak, Milk - Beauty (1990)

- Someone posted this possible Neutral Milk Hotel / Jeff Mangum demo leak of Milk - Beauty (1990) on /mu/ claiming they found the recording on an iPod that someone left behind in their apartment. It is supposedly a pre-Neutral Milk Hotel demo recorded by Jeff Mangum in 1990.
This demo is definitely known to exist and was encoded to MP3 at one point by someone on the Elephant 6 message boards, but it's never been shared online until now.
It sounds legit to me, I figured I'd put it up here so other people could listen and share what they think.

want to believe so badly that it's real. Could definitely be Jeff, and the recording quality is quite similar to that of the other unreleased demos. I know reddit's been picking it apart but i'm not thoroughly convinced it's a fake yet. Guess we will never know...
I can confirm that this is not real. I spoke recently to the guy who owns this tape. He said that the recordings on his tape are quite different and do not sound similar. Its certainly cool audio but it isn't what we want it to be.

@@vlvvv2064 he won't release the tape cos Jeff told him (I'm guessing at the time Jeff gave him the tape) not to release it. Or any of the other tapes he got from Jeff. I really hope at some point this tape and others will get released somehow.
@@noelwhite6650 that’s a shame, maybe it was a cool personal thing between the two guys or some special thing they wanted to keep for friends. Im satisfied with the output of content Jeff has released, but will always be down to listen to anything new.

this is too clean to be from 1990. it almost sounds studio quality. invent yourself a shortcake came out a year later and sounded like shit, so this can't be real

Super French Robot the instrumentation sounds similar to NMH though
yes it is, and id also keep in mind that we actually don't know what Jeff's voice sounded like in 1990

Either this is really him or it's an unbelievably good fake and likely made from clips of other NMH tracks. Compare it to the JM/NMH stuff from around that time.
Second I heard the vocals I knew it wasn't Mangum, it sounds a bit off

Fake, but a good fake. Great guitar tone, and that singer's amazing. I wish i could find the real version, or a fake, of "untitled" (also called "compilation") by milk, or "pygmie barn in e minor" also by milk

***** im afraid youre mistaken. we know the that this tape exists and we know the tracklisting but this isnt it. its someone who read the name and the tracklisting and made a fake rendition. read the description on the link you sent, also check the subreddit for NMH. pretty much everyone knows its not real at this point.

I think this is fake, Rubby bulbs is suppose to be ruby bulbs, the typo that made it Rubby hasn't happened when this was made.
Yeah this is definitely not him. Also his name is Jefferson, not Jeffrey, just so you know.
There is no concrete evidence that this isn't him, which it seems a lot like is the case, and his name ISNT Jefferson, that's the fake name he would go on radio shows and work on projects with for a while. His name is most certainly Jeffrey. Not Magnum though, that's a joke.

Ruby bulbs sound nothing like Jeff or his style from this time. Check out the Hype City version sometime. It’s nothing like this. Not to mention the fuzz sound is just off imo to what he was doing
