According to the IFPI they were the global recording artist of the year 2020 and 2021 and second in 2022 - since than they are on hiatus.
People underestimate how big they are and that is why it catches them by surprise when one of the unbeievable stuff gets mentioned like surprise name-drop in content that has nothing to do with them.
Like the Barbie movie cast suddenly mentioned Jimin because Ken wore the same outfit and gifting him the guitar.
Or a name-drop on the Simpsons.
Or King Charles mentioning them in a speech while having different Korean guests.
Or when they had a segment at the Oscars.
Or when Taehyung took over the Paris fashion show when he showed up as a guest for Celine.
Or when the Met created an extra event so BTS could gift them Korean art in the name of South Korea.
      Or their 3 UN speeches.
Or when they were invited into the White House/Oval Office.
It's so easy to forget how big they are.

BTS were personally mentored by Warren G and Coolio on the show “American Hustle Life”. Where they truly proved themselves to the world before they were even known. Also as a person who actually lived in Korea while K-music industry was being created and introduced, the music and culture was introduced through the military soldiers that served in South Korea at the time. Back in the 50s and 60s black soldiers taught the locals dance which has grown to what it is today. Fast forward to the 80s, 90s, early 2000 when I served in Korea HIPHOP blew up and us soldiers would be blasting it in the Itaewon and Busan clubs. Not to mention on the military base where we had dance offs with the KATUSA’s assigned to the US Military, I was stationed in Hanam-si outside of Seoul where military base Camp Colbern used to be. We played Rap, RnB, Reggaeton, Reggae, Soca, Salsa, and Meringue on the base daily while we were on and off duty. A KATUSA is Korean soldier assigned to the United States Army as part of the Korean military service.

    1. What I love about this song is that it describes the different relationship each rapper has with hip-hop, which also relates to their roles in music.
*RM is a poet.* He says, "To me who would normally scribble just stories or poems", and in Wild Flower, "Yeah, my beginning was poetry, it’s the one and only strength and dream that has kept me going." He is a master lyricist. While all BTS rappers write their own verses, RM also writes many of the non-rap parts, as well as songs for the vocalists, and for their junior group TXT.
*J-hope is a dancer.* He says, "I got into hip-hop feeling it with my body" and "now I’m in the intersection of rap and dance". He is the dance leader of BTS, guiding all members to create incredible performances. He is also releasing a dance documentary this March, called "Hope on the Street".
*Suga is a musician.* He says, "I answer with pride, 'Hip-hop is my everything, as a result, I buried my life itself in music." He produces his own solo songs, some of BTS songs, as well as songs for other artists, and winning awards for those songs. He lives and breathes music, that even the other members tease him about it, as well as admire and respect him for it.
    2. Since you mentioned J. Cole and Wale, RM has a collab with Wale called "Change", and BTS has a remake of J. Cole's "Born Sinner", called "Born Singer".
    3. I have to talk a little about Epik High, mentioned twice in this song. They are a South Korean hip-hop trio that have been around for 20 years. Both RM and Suga cited them as the ones who inspired them to become rappers. They're are now friends, and Suga even produced a song for them, "Eternal Sunshine". One of the members, Tablo, is a featured artist on RM's solo song, "All Day".

RM didn't write entire songs for either the other vocalists or TXT.
He wrote part of the lyrics for some of the songs other members realesed and a bit for ONE song of TXT.
J-Hope/Hoseok made "On The Street" with J.Cole.

He didn't write the whole song. He may me the main contributer to those though.
I don't contest that he writes a lot of their catalogue. He has over 200 song credits on the KOMCA for a reason.
Technically Serendibity and Singularity and Begin are not solo songs as they are part of BTS discography and not of them as individuals - the members in question "only" perform those - in fact the member in question isn't even credited as an individual on the song - only BTS is. The first two songs are not even personal but written for their "Love Yourself" storyline.
"Begin" is more complicated. The message IS from JK but he is not credited since he didn't write any of the lyrics.
In fact you can look up on the KOMCA which lyric credits he has (producer credits are not noted here).
It is rare that an artist writes a whole song completly alone.
Credits like those for "Haegeum" are almost non-existent even for Namjoon.
Song credits/who wrote the lyrics are very complicated and it is rare that an artist writes everything.
Namjoon does have credits for e.g. "Like Crazy" - but he is not the only one - 7 people are credited as authors. Jimin is also credited.
So I'm standing with the "didn't write entire".
Which does NOT mean he isn't a fantastic music creator and lyricist. *Namjoon* *ABSOLUTLY* *IS* effing *brilliant!*

    • @femmy-syahrani
      @femmy-syahrani Před 4 měsíci +10

@@ruthfischer7615 - I know about and agree with everything that you wrote.
I never said he writes entire songs or the *solo* songs of the vocalists. I only meant that he writes the lyrics in the songs that they perform. I often think about how he has more writing credits than Yoongi and Hobi even though they all write their own verses, and this is partly because he has songwriting credits in songs that the rapline don't participate in, i.e. BTS songs that are performed by the vocal line, in which Yoongi and Hobi don't have writing credits.
I mean, if we want to be technically accurate, I also have to say that Yoongi has a co-producer in some of his solo songs, El Capitxn or Pdogg or others. There are also a small amount of his solo songs that are produced by others.
However, I wrote what I wrote for the sake of brevity. I wanted to focus on Namjoon's skills in writing lyrics and Yoongi's skills in producing. As it is, my comment is already long.

Guys, look up the Korean artist, Seo Taiji, since you guys were talking about hiphop references. KPop starts with him basically, 3 decades ago, & there would be no BTS & all of the KPop industry if it were not for Seo Taiji. He helped magnify & popularized Hiphop/rap, as well as continue & mix rock & metal into his music. He also popularized street & hiphop dancing choreography, as well as hiphop fashion in Korea. There are other notable figures in S.Korea that helped along the way but the KPop we have today in its form & existence in our universe could not have happened without Taiji. Also, the word KPop is really just the western media nickname for this industry, it should really just be called Idol music industry, although the word & concept of Idol also is from the US, because that goes far back to the days of Sinatra (RIP) in the 1940s, which is now 80+ years ago, when he became an idol of his heyday. There is a long history of western/US music getting adopted by Korea going as far back as the 19th century & because of that is why we have KPop & BTS today. Lastly, one thing to note is that the big irony of KPop is that it became more pop, R&B, hiphop & choreography because of Taiji, but yet Taiji is first & foremost a metal & rock multi-instrumental musician. By that logic, KPop should have become rock & metal, but it did not because of what Taiji did in the early 1990s. It is a long story & I could write several more paragraphs about Taiji, but I will stop here, heh. Also keep in mind that hiphop basically started in the early 1970s in the US, as you noted, although its manifestation started in the 1960s, a lot of it due to racial politics of the time.

Thing is lots of ppl like artists that are not main stream, BTS had a huge fanbase in 2015, they were popular internationally but only if you knew about kpop, the same with rap, with them being lovers of hip hop they no doubt knew of the non mainstream artists. Obviously they mention those known as they were a huge inspiration but me being in the kpop scene I knew of BTS in 2012 because kpop was my thing.
BTS being the biggest group in the world not just Korea with millions of international fans, the international fans outweigh Korean fans now because that's how big they are.
I will say that since 2020 the newer international fans are not the same as pre 2020, the fandom was amazing, although bigger now it's also more toxic. 😢

RM and Wale song called Change. RM at the tender age of 20 was produced by Warren G.
All of the vocalists sang the hook. BTS is the biggest group in the World not just in South Korea. They have global success. They began as a Hip Hop group before K-pop.
What I learned listening to artists from SK, Japan, they have loved Black/ Latino culture for years. They study MJ performances because they are performance artists. BTS always gives 10000% during their concerts because they want the audience to leave with a memory of a great experience. They sell out the largest arenas in the US, Japan, SK, Uk and more. They easily sell out 80k arenas. They held 4 sold out concerts at So-Fi stadium in Cali, Allegiant Stadium in Vegas. The tickets sell out during their presale. They love something, they go all in. They study the greats. Jhope studied hip hop dance-boogaloo, poppin, loc, b-boy. The members of BTS listen to Jazz, Big Band, R&B, Soul. They love music. Dance. They give props to the originators. Their song Wake Up sounds like 80’s West Coast hip hop.

Not only in Japan and Korea, I'm Singaporean, they played hiphop in clubs in the 90s. The Malay Singaporean people are more inclined to these type of music. We're like the Hispanic version in our country. Actually hiphop was already known throughout South East Asia way back then. Most of us are the same age as Snoop & Tupac. 😂

They are not just the biggest boy band but they are the “Biggest Band” in the world! Over 900 awards and still winning EVEN on hiatus! No one has ever done that.
They are very influential as well. Vogue magazine even said (during their interview with member V) that BTS Is not just a group but a “Movement”.
Right now they are serving in the military. They are doing well with that too. Some members got special awards after 5 weeks of training before getting allocated to their respective units.
3 of them (Jin, RM and V) became Platoon Leaders in their respective Units and graduating as “Elite Soldier Trainees”. RM and V were only 4 out of 800 trainees that got awarded the “Elite Soldier Award” for constantly scoring the highest in Mental and Physical training. Jimin also got a Special Award for scoring the highest in some parts of the training.
5 of the members are in the Frontlines - Infantry Division (Jin, JHope, Jimin, RM and Jungkook) .
Suga- is assigned to office work because of shoulder injury.
V is in the Special Forces (which required 3 additional weeks of extensive training) before getting shipped to his unit known as the “Double Dragons” where he will be serving the duration of his military duties.
2 members (Jin and JHope) will be back June and October of this year and the rest will be back 2nd half of next year . We can’t wait!
