      I think silver flutes sound ringy, plus I would prefer one with closed holes because keys are fine, holes are better, but keys with holes are silly. This is all why I started playing 19th / Irish flute century flute and recorder.

    If you like holes, you could learn to play the baroque flute! Vincent Bernolin, whose resin recorders you reviewed, makes some very nice resin baroque flutes.

    • @tapsarautanen
      @tapsarautanen Před 4 lety +10

      Wow, so great to read this comment. I have been considering exactly what you wrote (not that I am anywhere closed to this lady's ability with the recorder but I like to make noise with them and wouldn't mind making noise also with a baroque flute). However, I never started because of the incredible price (relatively speaking) of baroque flutes. I also noticed recently the Bernolin flute in his page and wondered whether there is anyone who has tried it. Any chance you (or someone else here) can give it a review. Maybe Bernolin himself can support a "I try the baroque flute" in this channel borrowing one of his instruments?

      @@tapsarautanen There are a couple of relatively inexpensive Baroque flutes available from Aulos -- a Stanesby model at A=415 and a Grenser model at A=440. Both are good, but the G# on the Grenser is much nicer, and it's an easier reach as well.

    • @rrssna
      @rrssna Před 4 lety +1

      I don't own a Bernolin flute, but have played on one of his G.A. Rottenburgh flutes a couple of times. It is a robust flute with a bright sound, which compares well with a wooden instrument. I started learning with the Aulos Grenser plastic flute before moving on to a wood instrument, but I wish I had access to on of Bernolin's flutes back then. which I think are superior. The Bernolin flute would be a very good starter baroque flute. It speaks well in all registers, the tuning is good, the sound is bright and clear.

    Mike: I used to play flute but lost my embouchure when I broke my bottom front teeth and had to have a plate. I recently reached a point where I needed to find something to assist my breathing. I got out the flute and found it leaked like a sieve and was too old to be repaired. Fortunately I stumpled across a recorder group and took up playing again after 70 years away from my old plastic school descant. I stayed with a "C" instrument and treated myself to a Kung Tenor recorder after watching one of your programmes. Keep up the good work - I love your cheerful approach to make playing lots of fun

    I play both instruments (poorly). I'll be honest, I love the flute and regarded the recorder as an easier instrument, something to get me back into playing music without putting in the endless practice hours the flute requires. I was wrong, of course, but in the process I discovered what a wonderful instrument the recorder is and also a world of music that I hadn't taken the time to explore. Team Recorder had a big part in this, so, thanks Sarah!

    Flute has been my first instrument, before switching to piano and then settling for composition (albeit piano and keyboard instruments in general are very useful for composition), so I can perfectly relate to the difficulties of such instrument. Back then, I was 5 years old and I stopped just simply because I didn't had the patience to form the embochoure, then I found piano to be much easier, but problem is it's an instrument where difficulties come out later than on other and I was eventually convinced to re-start from the very bases (hand posture, scales, arpeggios) because I had to became decently proficient for composition. One year ago, I picked up a cornett alongside the recorders and, aware of all the problems I've had studying flute before and piano then, I patiently have practiced embochoure exercises and long tones for many months and now I'm starting seeing the light. So, yes, I absolutely love when instrumentists put themselves in discussion and try some new instruments, or to return to their previous instruments. As for me, I would like to try flute again just to "reconcile" myself with the instrument...

    Reassuring video, Sarah - you're better at flute than I am on recorder - but then I'm a pianist and oboist - and mouth tension is impossible to avoid on the oboe!
    I thoroughly agree about finding out what it is like to be learning again - I took up classical guitar three years ago and it's truly frustrating when I know what I'd like it to sound like! But helpful with encouraging me to approach my own pupils with more empathy.
    You forgot the links on this video! Up here is nothing and down there is nothing either!

      Ann Burgess my face feels weird playing recorder. As someone that played clarinet as a child and now flute as a grown up, playing music with lack of facia tension is WEIRD

    Ha, happy to see JustAnotherFlutist mentioned. My first flute was never polished and turned black, and the pads wore down, not worth replacing. My friend gave me his flute which I stepped on after tripping over a speaker tripod, and my flute after that fell off a cabinet and also broke before a wedding I was due to play at. To this day I cannot play a B-foot flute, and do not need an expensive one to make a good sound. I regret buying an expensive one to find that out.

    👏👍 Hi Sarah - It’s amazing how you maintained your embouchure, and more surprisingly you remembered the fingering chart in all three octaves for the concert flute after all these many years. BTW: I, too, prefer to play jazz tunes on my concert flute. But then I say that about my Bb clarinet, alto saxophone, Bb trumpet and flugelhorn. 😉 🎼 ♫

    I'm primarily a cellist, but I always come back to the flute, recorder and I bring out an ocarina to play casually with friends every once in a while. My fundamentals are OK but there's always new bits of tension to deal with whenever I come back to the flutes, and I definitely have a problem with chromatic fingerings between them. XD

Single handedly responsible for a 99% increase in teenage boys playing recorder. Yes miss 😍 can I have detention again miss 😍 and extra recorder practice.

    My main instrument is the flute (but man, I am sooo rusty!) and I picked up the treble recorder as an adult. I'm not sure which one I prefer the best. they have different sounds, different uses... I kind of love them both =)

    I just bought a flute. I had one about fifty years ago. Currently I have an Irish flute and a bunch of whistles and a five string carbon fiber fiddle. The fiddle is my main instrument. Muscle memory hasn’t survived the fifty years so it’s been a learning experience from the word go getting the note I want out of the flute. I have seven ir eight tunes I practice every day. Mostly Irish but Daphne from van Eyck is included. I love the sound I can get from it if I concentrate. I have three Moerk (Sp?) Rottenberg recorders and some Zenón plastic ones. I brought a rennaisance (sp? again) soprano to a session and blew away all the whistles. It was a few times louder than them. My carbon fiber five string is the best instrument I’ve ever owned but I love all of my super toys. Yes, my neck hurts when I play the flute.

    Sarah, if you won’t be minding that beautiful Gemeinhardt flute, I would GLADLY buy it from you 😅 they’re pretty hard to get here in my country (México). And to answer your question, yes: I’m both recorder and flute player, and bass player, and baritone singer, and piano player. Musical instruments are fun 😎

    Hi Sarah! I enjoy your videos SO much!❤ I am a music educator who majored in flute performance in college and taught a full studio of students for many, many years BEFORE tearing my rotator cuff, requiring surgery. Realizing that it would not be wise for me to ever spend time prepping for performance, nor performing (ouch!) I have decided that, in my retirement, I am going to be a recorder player. Based on your demonstrations, I purchased a soprano Mollenhauer in rosewood and I AM HOOKED! I LOVE PLAYING THE RECORDER! And it’s only because of watching your videos that I took the big leap and decided to go for it. Thank you!

    Flute player here ^_^ so yeah flute is my personal favorite. It is hard just like any other instrument. It all depends on what teacher you had. Good teachers will cover all the basics right away like embouchure and posture. I’ve played the soprano recorder when I was little. I guess I did not like it because it was high pitched and was made of plastic. Although I’m still interested in a tenor or alto recorder. The thing is that I don’t like holes, I prefer the keys.

    I bought a resin recorder yesterday. I love M. Bernolin's flutes. I played for several years too. However I have M S and I'm not sure if my facial muscles can sustain an embouchure any more. M S does very weird things. Invisible things. I was a singer but after a disastrous rehearsal where I suffered severe cognitive fatigue, I quit. So I took up the trumpet. FAIL. My facial muscles could not manage to shape 3 notes. So, back to my first love like yours, Sarah, the recorder. One day I'll buy a resin flute, but it's too much money right now, especially after buying the alto. I'm going to learn those vivaldi concerti finally, at last. My old resin aulos is more than 40 years old. It is suffering a little. Thanks so much for all the great videos.
