- Stuart Zender, known for his basslines in Jamiroquai, has an Ashdown signature Pedal called the "Funk Face". We couldn't resist and fitted a whole drumset into one of the #TGU18 rooms to be able to show the pedal in a band context.

This is a good example of 3 very good musicians that couldn't play together.
From Zender's stoney interview to that drummer's what the hell r u doing, this video is an epic fuckin chaos.
So cool they found someone walking past the front door to play drums in that jam. So inclusive!
this made me feel bad for everyone involved.
@@cleanwindow_7869 not it's not, check Smokey by Funkadelic, that makes you want to get a wah czcams.com/video/Oj2NA-9zwNY/video.html
This is truely just awful, I love Zender playing but lord what a tool, hats off to the interviewer for sticking it out cos my god, also props for leading the jam. Also I really wanted to like the pedal, but now I don’t even wanna know haha
Lol I know!!, great influential bass player but proper bell end haha
Jamiroquai didn’t split up for no reason lol
total BELL isnt he... coked up tae fuk
damn, wasnt diggin those grooves too much. But Zender's a legend.
When the camera guy says " I play a little drums, can I jam with you guys?" 🙈
naturalmuzick : Superb comment. Much obliged
listen to the album "the return of the space cowboy",that guy built the most inspired funky bass lines in all the funk history....I still can't believe it 30 years after..And he was....17.Thanks thousands of times mr Zender
He was 20 years old on ROTSC.
Mr. Moon and Scam have my favorite baselines ever
@@tacodias Mr. Moon has such a good bassline!
Hands down.
I wish I could find a decent Stuart Zender video from the present times 😋
People keep saying “they’ve changed their view on Zender” or “he’s a bellend” and I get where they’re coming from but in his defence he does say he’s nervous in this video, and some people are like that when they’re nervous. They just keep talking shit. I wouldn’t write off someone as talented as him based off one video, no mater how cringe inducing or Dadaist the whole affair appears
cocaine is a HELL OF A DRUG
The guy has issues.
To dislike a person and to dislike their art and talent is another issue
I would love to have a drink or five with Zender. He's such an outrageous cat. One of the greatest bass players EVER.
Trust me you wouldn’t 😂
@@cleanwindow_7869 I was pals with him a few years ago ... got to know him very well .. he’s not he’s best with drink.
@@scottwheeler6807 hardly surprising
@Scott Wheeler lol what do u mean he’s a wild man? lol
Same
Is there ever any bass in this video? I gave up.
I was wondering why he got kicked out of Jamiroquai...
I thought the exact same thing. Holy crap. Can you imagine Stuart's zaniness meeting up with Jay's egomaniacism?
tingkagol I swear he left?
Nick Van Gelder got kicked out of Jamiroquai. Stuart Zender left the band because he felt treated unfairly by JK.
@@Mazinga I quited Jamiroquai a the same time than Stuart.
@@Mazinga Stu was kicked out because he complained so much. Stu said at the time that he could be more famous outside of Jamiroquai, but now he doesn't hide what he regrets.
no pressure for the drummer!!
Legendary Stuart Zender!! ❤️🔥
......my ears and eyes are bleeding!......I never seen somethings awful like that.
What's not to love about him. I wish he had more videos on the web to watch.
Stuart is great! //Simon
Was that supposed to be awkward comedy? Holy moly!
this changed my view of zender. not in a good way though
Explain??
@@godstallchild7964 he acted like a coked up idiot
@@godstallchild7964 watch the video again. He's massively annoying.
HA! Cocaine is a hell of a drug!
Where ya find that drummer??
Stuart is a bad mamma jamma, but what the heck is going on here?? I feel embarrassed for the "drummer". That pedal is pretty sick, though!
What are Zenders pills? I whant them too ; ))
Never meet your hero's 🤨
If you watch the High Times and the Cosmic Girl video, some scenes with Zender show that he's a funny hilarious, light hearted guy. The performances he did in Taratata 94 and throughout the 90s are just Great. Pretty funny guy. Legend.
From « Travelling Without moving 1997 Phoenix » with his wonderful improvisation to this... Damn.
I don’t recognise the bassist i love.
This was always him. Why do you think him and JK fell out? LMAO
@@NotCharAznable he wasn’t like this back in the 90´s.
@@baptiste.v6532 he kinda was but he definitely explored it more since then with the freedom of not being in jamiroquai
Zender playing a Lefay bass, great to see that!
I saw Jamiroquai in live concert in Finsbury Park London England I think it was 93 or 94 summer I remember the opening guest was Maceo Parker. Jamiroquai was a great band @ the time . . Then I meet Stuart Zender (Bass) @ a private function in Elephant Castle spoke to him for a few minutes one of my question was if you must pick one album witch one would that be his response was “Weather Report Back Market 1976” Because of Jay Kay greediness Stuart Zender left the band and to me that was the end of Jamiroquai . .
That’s amazing.. in a bass magazine from 1998 i think, i read that he learnt all the songs from this album and was particularly a fan of jaco on « barbary coast ». Amazing that maceo was opening for them too, must have been an incredible night
You should check out their music since he left. It’s also great.
For a moment there I thought I was watching Jazz Club from The Fast Show. Nice. 😂
LOLLIN!
What kind of bass is the blue one? And what is Zender playing? Is that some new Warwick design?
The blue one's a Sandberg and the black one's a LeFay
What's the mark of the blue bass? With the four dots?
Sandberg bass
Interesting video but I’ve still no idea what this pedal does. Are they both using it? Very odd video.
Ritchie Rosson distortions probably, I’m not sure
tube distortion and a twin filter. Like a BassBalls but with a 2nd footswitch and an actual tube for the distortion part. It's a $300, 18-Volt bassballs. Ridiculous, but for some reason I still want one for the separation of the dist and filter.
When will you grow up Zender! are from Sheffield by the way?
Maybe just a socially awkward dude who turns in to a goof?
His playing back in the day was everything i ever wanted to be !
Freaking legend
I wish for once I could listen to SZ talking straight and not traying so hard to be funny all the time
Then listen to the podcast TalkMusic by Scott Cowie EP:67 if you want to listen to a Stuart who wasn’t high on something.
what the heck is this drummer x))))))))))))))))
Lots of negativity here but this happens with improvisation and free form stuff I'm afraid; sometimes it's hot, sometimes it's not. Zender still produced some great work in his career and is rightly respected
What is the exat model of the sandberg bass? I love it!
Sandberg California TM4. Looks like it has Delano pickups and the 'hardcore aging' option. Not sure what that color is.
@@scarab944 Too much informations..! Thanks!
Zender needs to do a collab with Eric Andre. They're both bass players and they're both insane. 😂
God, seeing Stuart Zender on The Eric Andre Show would take me OUT 😭😭 I feel like he’d bring some good chaotic energy to the set.
Gosh, I wonder if someone in there was aware that they were with one of the most inflencial and - somehow - one of the best bass player of the last 50 years? (Even if, ok, he is not Jim Carrey, but... guys... remember the basslines of this dude??? Why is he not with some musician a little bit more... you know?... less... damn, you know?)
As far as I'm concerned, the guy who plays bass with him isn't that scanty by comparison.
I don't think I've seen Zender play, actually 'play' like he used to. Since leaving Jamiroquai, and the 'Travelling without moving' era ... Just goofy interviews ... It's either not him (twist) or he's lost his mojo down the end of a doobie?
I always thought it way Jay K.... But maybe there really are two sides to a story. Two to tango and all that.
He is/ was one of my favourite players...
Mark Ronson had a go...
Kinda went a bit Syd Barrett.
I think, Stu has a too childish gimme-credit mentality to grasp reality, since jamiroquai age. (Literally he has been exaggerating his importance BY TALK to make his fans believe he is a genius instead of JK and Toby) so he has a difficulty to release an album on himself being escaped by co-workers
BELLEND is the word you are looking for ; )
Christ! And I genuinely used to look up to this guy!
4:56 Thank me later.
I'll thank you now xD.
9:19 Thank me later.
neszero Should’ve listened to you, I was not impressed.
His german is just perfect :´D
Anyone who takes Zender’s playing serious in this video needs a good sit down and realise they need to stop taking life at face value…..and chill. The lad is messing about. If he took himself serious he would show-off what he could actually do. Some people just don’t feel the need to show-off at every opportunity, because they don’t feel the need too.
What bass is Zender playing?
le fay
I feel like he was just fucking with this interview so bad, purposefully playing like shit to fuck with this guy
I thought the same thing. People in this comment section are getting all pissy about this interview, but really I think Stu is just a massive troll and is trying to perpetuate the whole “bassists are weirdos” stereotype - he’s exhibited a sort of playful self-awareness of that in the past. He’s one of those guys where if you get him, you get him; if you don’t, you don’t. That’s what I love about him.
The fine art of over drumming.
That drummer can't really keep time.. He not a drummer.
What bass is Stuart using??
LeFay d-tuner it's not sold anymore
This is just like those "____ Shreds" videos...
Thought that drummer had a sweet ass groove
Definitely an awesome bass player! BUT, like with many famous people, they just need to take their head out from up their own arse occasionally, so they just stop talking a load of shit. OH, and then give it a wash before opening their mouth again, just for the sake of hygiene and also a convenient pause for thought ...
I guess this didnt go well.
I love Jamiroquai, Stuart Zender makes me crazy in the first 3 lp (then he gave them up etc etc ..) and in live .. Great groove and surely left its mark in the golden age of acid jazz and is a name to remember .. But there is a tendency to overestimate it a little too much, especially considering what is around today (guys next door who would make many "professionals" turn pale) .. Zender in my opinion, which I love for what he did in the 90s, today he lives on income from what he has done in the past.
It’s what you contribute it’s not a competition in art music whatever allot of those people you think turns other pale can’t groove 1st and if they do they’re taking from the past influences like Stuart he was young and contributed what others haven’t what have we contributed to music ?
It’s a shame but I’m not sure whether the drummer can remember how to play 😕
This seemed very difficult to keep on track.
I can't believe all this time I've been wondering what ever happened to Trace Elliot & all the while they are Ashdown.🤯
What is the name of the base Zander using ?
川上恭平it’s a Le Fay, insane basses from Germany. Hence the “Fleisch”-joke, I think.
Le Fay Herr Schwarz 4. £3127 on Thomann website.
I wish stu is having the time of his life away from the chaotic media.
He might be. I don’t think he ever wanted attention. He easily peaked in the 90s.
what the demo ???? I Don't think it's terrible he seems to be bored Stuart no?
Michiel Romeyn on the drums.
That was... weird
what in the world? :D
what did i just watched?
pretty bad bath salt epidemic in Britain I see
So chaotic
A brand named Zender bass. He would get sued by Fender probably xD
Love Stuart, but this jam was lame and I guess it was due to the other musicians and the lack of a piano player. Someone like Stu needs some Jamiroquai style Fender Rhodes chords
why an amateur?
It seemed they were attempting some sort of fusion funk thing but to me it just sounded like experienced players playing a 12 year olds interpretation of solos
Yeah, maybe some of those classic Jamiroquai bass parts were actually written by Toby (RIP)
@@joshuagarden7304 To say he became a mediocre bass player is not true and unfair. Yes, he is working for many many many years on his solo album and I’m wondering when it finally will come out, but he still got his old juice and funk. Just listen to his features on Incognito or DeAngelo tracks.
The thing is: Jamiroquai was THE band, it is his home and where he could make his music. His biggest mistake was to leave Jamiroquai and I believe he still regrets it to his day, even if he would never admit it, but another fact is, since he, Simon Katz and Toby left the band, Jamiroquai was never the same. They muted into a commercial pop funk band.
Stu cut his wings off and since then he tries to fly again.
@@Mazinga well I think that there might be a lot of shit Stu's been through in he's personal life that quite nobody knows. I personnally liked this video and it was an experience to just watch him go and do he's thing. Also I think that only an experienced musician would at least try to understand Stuart's style of playing. Further more if he's really working on a "solo record" it is more than understandable that it might take it's time. After all he's probably a very demanding musician as well as a demanding boss if it comes to a collaboration work. Sattuuhan sitä.
What bass is the interviewer playing?
Should be a Sandberg bass.
That "drummer" guy makes this impossible to watch. I made it to 7:33, but that involves few skips. Totally obsolete jam session. Nothing happened. Very zen jam,lol
Zender is a legend.
When studying at ACM we were asked who we wanted to give a bass masterclass and Zender came up a lot. The tutor at the time said all we'd need to do is give him a bag of weed...is this ever the proof!!! That was a mess!!!
What?
Who?
//Andy
Where?
czcams.com/video/cM2bqFgHOgI/video.html I found this video from the same day by the looks of it with just Zender and the drummer. You're welcome.
what the fuck was that about ?
Lol i love stuart cracks me up. Some people are tripping on him on here it all jokes my people
Disappointing jam. Lot of talk but little play.
No wonder he's a bass genius, he looks like Lenin himself
Finally... Puddle of Mudd has a rival for dog shit video of 2020
That's EXACTLY what the dead people ghosts do........they're looking for partners in the eternal fire.
Can see why he was booted from Jamiroquai. Bit of knob
THIS ^^^
Mmmmm
get back to JQ please. you and Jay Kay is magic together
Sombody pop some Oxy before this vid?
Whats going on here ? Nothing.
Zender is such a knob.
Done a gig with him 30 years ago and he was a knob.
He’s
Some feat to out knob Jay Kay.
Great player, though
😊
That is the strangest video I have ever seen
why is stuart like that. i partied with him one night and morning, he was a friend of my friend, and him and a female friend of his went home with us in the morning, and she was absolutely awful and spiteful. Stuart was like really insecure but very friendly, just like a little puppy and very subservant. But then the weird twist was that both my friend and that girl stuart was there with, were really bossy towards him and at the same time they totally wanted him there because of who he was. strangest fucking night out ever.
Dam that’s messed up why would that treat him like that he’s a total legend but forget that he deserves better than that not as a legend but a person not cool.but what your saying sounds odd the girls where very mean and he was friendly but insecure those two words paint a strange picture lol
who did what now?
WTF is that drummer doing?!
His best
Lol you killed me with this comment
From the man bun to the drummer; this was hard to watch.
Zender 🔔 END
Rock drummer funk bassit not gonna work unless of course your the Red hot chilli peppers
A bit of mucking about - can't be serious all of the time.
Jesus wept. Here is a lesson to young bassists...practice practice practice!
I like Paul turner
Feels like I just watched an entire video of outtakes.
Cocaine is a hell of a drug
Does he do it?
THIS ^^^
😂😂Long Time he loose vis brain..... And of course thé guy in front play too much notes ... As usual
Xander, fuckd with this dude just too bad, I can't watch it
Comment section is salty, zender was obviously super nervous, but if anything the interviewer should have atleast tried to match his energy instead of just saying "Right." every attempt at a joke. Honestly he was more annoying than Zender here.
Is he high in coke or something? he is musical genious but I'd end that interview if it was me...
