  • ● I go on a bike trip through the Melechov Nature Park and its surroundings. I only go around the edge of the park, so the main Melechov hill (715m above sea level / 2,345ft above sea level) (you can see it at 3:50 - 3:55 - the hill on the left) may be in the next video. In the video, I show a lot of interesting places in this park and its surroundings.
    Melechov Nature Park
    ● It is a protected area (32 km² / 12 sq mi) established in 1995 in order to preserve a typical landscape character with landscape and naturalistic value and to protect several protected species of plants and animals. The most prominent feature of the wooded landscape is the peak of Melechov (715m above sea level / 2,345ft above sea level) (you can see it at 3:50 - 3:55 - the hill on the left). There are several natural attractions here.
    God's torments
    ● God's torment is a small building, most often in the shape of a column or pillar, sometimes covered with a roof. They are meant to symbolize the pillar at which Jesus Christ was scourged. God's torments are located on hills or crossroads and mark interesting places (places with a distant view, natural attractions, important battles or accidents), borders of land or administrative territories of municipalities.
    Podivice quarry
    ● The quarry was established in 1939. Lipnice-Melechov granite was mined here. 40-50 workers worked here, mostly locals. The stone was being transported to the construction of a nearby highway. Between 1941 and 1945, work in the quarry was stopped. During the war, the villagers set up shelters for grain and flour here. It was reopened after the war, but after some time it was closed. The quarry has a length of 70 meters / 229 foot and a height of up to 20 meters / 65 foot in some places. As abandoned, in 1985 it became a refuge for the tramping group T.O. Skaláci Humpolec, who remain in this quarry to this day.
    Křižná studánka (Cross well)
    ● Křižná Studánka (sometimes also called Husitská) is a pilgrimage site located in the Melechov Nature Park.
The missionary Mr. Václav Hanzel used to come here and strengthen the Catholic faith in these remote parts of Bohemia. He often stopped at the well and washed his sore eyes. After washing them, he was always relieved and later the pain disappeared completely. In 1741, out of gratitude for the healing, he built a wooden cross over the well and on its sides statues of the Virgin Mary and St. Vitus. A wooden chapel was built over the well. In 1742, the painter Josef Svoboda painted twelve images of saints on its outer walls. More and more pilgrims came to the well at that time. In 1845, a stone cross was built instead of a wooden cross. And in 1868, a stone chapel was also built. To this day, two pilgrimages are held here every year.
    Conciliation cross
    ● The Conciliation Cross is a stone cross erected most often at the place where a crime or accident happened.
A cross stone planted in the forest west of the solitude of Staré Hutě, we can currently consider it the oldest dated cross stone in Bohemia. The front surface of the stone slab contains a complex relief pattern, the central motif of which is a cross. There is an image of a medieval battle axe, and on the sides of the cross are depictions of swords and spears. Above the cross is a two-line text that is illegible today. It has the year 1491 engraved on the crossbar of the cross. The stone was worked by masons directly at the place of its setting, as evidenced by the broken surface on the stone block near the monolith. The board reaches a height above ground of 90 cm, / 35 in a width of 65 cm / 25 in and a thickness of 25 cm / 9 in.
    Proseč fortress
●The Gothic fortress was probably built at the end of the 14th century and was abandoned in the 16th century. The torso of a residential tower with a square plan with a side length of 8.4 m / 27 ft has survived to this day. The entrance to the building was through an opening with the remains of a pocket for a bolt securing the door. The lighting of the ground floor was mediated by a window in one of the walls. The building certainly contained at least two floors. Overall, it is very similar to the nearby Melechov fortress. Around the building was a moat as a fortification. The fortress is an example of a very simple manor house of a member of the lower nobility in the Czech countryside from the end of the 14th century.
    Thanks for watching.
