  • Today we’re going to look at five improv games that are perfect for your next team-building event.
    0:00 Intro
    0:26 The Ad Game
    1:33 Yes, Let’s
    2:15 Human Objects
    2:53 Hello Kitty
    3:42 Red ball
Our first improv game is called The Ad Game.
Now the ad game hones in on each aspect of collaboration, as well as many other things! To play, divide your group into teams of three people, then give each team a particular object, if you don't have a physical object to give them you can simply tell them what they have. Each team will then add extra information about their object, adding more and more details until they’ve created a revolutionary new product. Say you gave a coffee mug to group one. Someone in the group would create a detail about the mug, such as, “This mug has a giant handle.” The rest of the team would then yell, “YES!” as if it’s the best idea they've ever heard. Then someone else in the group would add on another statement, such as “And it has an amazing lid”. This process continues with each group member adding on new details about the product and the whole team agreeing, until they’ve fully fleshed out their product and decided on a name.
Our next improv game is called Yes, Let’s.
Now this game is perfect for boosting collaboration because it involves everyone being super present with each other. To play, have everyone walk around a large, empty room. Then, shout out a suggestion for something that the group could do. Such as “let’s go swimming,” “let’s go skiing,” or “let’s crawl around on our bellies”. The whole group then shouts out “yes, let’s!” And proceeds to do the action, moving around the room pretending they're “swimming,” “skiing,” or actually “crawling” on their bellies. After a little while, someone else will shout out a new suggestion, such as “let’s cook a feast,” and so the process repeats itself.
Our third improv game is called Human Objects.
Now in human objects participants will use their bodies to best impersonate a given item. So make sure there’s plenty of space, and then call out an object. This can be whatever you want, but whatever you call out, make sure that your participants are using their entire bodies to best resemble the object. This game forces your employees to think outside the box. They’ll see how their fellow colleagues best attack each new task, and then that'll help them learn about each other and form closer bonds in the process.
    Next we have Hello Kitty.
This simple improv game is all about getting involved, having fun, being silly and making each other laugh. To start, separate your group into two teams: one being kittens and one being puppies. Then pair up everyone, with each pair having one kitten, and one puppy. The puppy’s job is to say hello with one goal in mind: to make the kittens smile, laugh, chuckle, anything that shows a sign of amusement. The kitten’s job is to keep a straight face. So what happens if the puppy succeeds? Well, then a kitten turns into a puppy! And the two make their way around trying to make the leftover kittens laugh or smile. The game ends when there are no more kittens and everyone has joined the puppy team.
Last on our list of improv games is Red Ball.
Red ball is fast-paced and energizing. It’s a great way to lift a team’s spirits, create a tighter unit, and improve employee relations. So here’s how you play. Gather everyone in a circle and show them all an imaginary red ball that you’re holding. Then make eye contact with someone across the circle, say “red ball” and pass them the ball simultaneously. That person will catch the ball, make eye contact with somebody else, and pass the ball to them. Again, saying “red ball”.
After a few times, introduce a second item, a third item, a fourth item, and so on! By the end of the game, you could be passing around a frisbee, a sleeping child, an angry cat, the red ball, and whatever else. Make sure you pass around each item as if they were real.
So for example, if you're passing around a sleeping child, you’d probably want to be quiet and soothe that child as you pass them. But with the angry cat you'd probably want to be careful as you pass it to each new participant. You’ll end up with complete chaos as the group starts slinging, whirling, and passing your imaginary items around the circle!
Whether you attempt one or all of these fun improv games, your employees are sure to enjoy themselves. Let me know in the comments below which ones were your favorites. And remember to like, share, and subscribe for more videos just like this one.
