Motivation is watching your kitchen go from messy to clean and happy. My sister wanted to know why I'm so crazy about cleaning. To me, it's definitely the desire to not be overwhelmed by the stress of a mess. When your house is a mess, nothing works. Too much stuff is not JOY it is PAIN. a PAIN to have to try to think, "where will I store this?" "Why am I keeping this?"

  • @briellejoysmids3132

I'm telling you , the " two minute tidy " is a miracle worker ! Sometimes it's just getting started that's the most difficult . A little while back , my parents were away , and we kids were responsible for keeping the house clean while they were away. ( don't worry my sister is 21 and a reliable babysitter ) . So , sometimes , it got messy and I felt the need to clean before the house turned upside down ! I did not feel like cleaning in any way ! But I watched Dawns video on the two minute tidy , and it ALWAYS gave me the power to start. Tbh most of the time it was longer than two minutes because I felt I could handle more ... I just needed the boost !

I think I have too much.
After adopting a low-carb diet I purged my pantry and found sooooo many expired foods because I may have thought I had one, but couldn't find it so repeat purchased the same item.

I love the very old concept of trying to keep too much of yesterday from using up today. That just meant that if we'd gone to bed with that day's dishes done, the kitchen tidied and toys or older people "stuff" put away first, the next morning could start out fresh and irritation free! That's really my motivation at the end of each day - I REALLY dislike getting up to disorder - the guilt makes me miserable!! Right now, I'm working on catching up with older unfinished sewing projects. Our grandchildren live in other states or just can't come over right now, so it's time to catch up! Thank you all for your fun videos and having cute children to see while all of ours are out of sight!

Two things that have been great for me: 1. Finding your channel 2. moving internationally. We have been living abroad for over 10 years and I hate the process of packing up and selling things at the end of our time. You can try and ship it all and pay crazy amounts or you can sell everything and buy it again. Usually we did the latter, but after having kids and finally getting a decent shipping allowance, we decided to ship things. We only shipped things that we REALLY needed and didn’t want the hassle of trying to figure out where to get it in a new country. Furniture and dishes comes with the provided housing. It’s nothing fancy, but I find something we need to buy, I’m more intentional. Asking if we really need it and where can I keep it. Can I get by without it. Also the idea of inventory has been really great for me. I’m typically the only person who cleans or organizes and so I know the responsibility of the inventory falls on me. After moving here our housing got ruined by a tsunami and we had to move. That was stressful and I threw things in random places. Having this social distancing time has been great for organizing. I’m almost done!
2 areas that constantly need attention are my desk (I’m a teacher, teaching digitally) and the recycling. Here we have sort and recycle EVERYTHING! It takes over and I feel stressed when I see it. It’s a constant job and a pain.

Thanks for the 2-minute tidy tip! I've started that already. Here's a tip for cleaning the VitaMix if you ever try bulletproof coffee again - add a tablespoon or so of salt, a drop of dish soap, and 2 cups or so of hot water to the blender jar - blend on high for a few seconds. The salt does something to dissolve the oily film even better than just dish soap. I *love* my bulletproof coffee - it also upset my stomach until I started making it cold brew in a Mason jar, then filtering it into another Mason jar and storing in the fridge. I don't have to use a filter twice/day anymore! One filter is enough for 3-4 days' worth of cold brew. I like my coffee hot, so I heat it before blending with butter and brain octane, and sometimes collagen powder and/or cream.

I have been taking your decluttering advice seriously. In the kitchen: donating bread machine, extra measuring spoons and dry measuring cups that was just taking space and/or getting in my way, cleaned out my junk drawer, thin out my wardrobe (felt better when I only see the clothes I like to wear), clean out my drawers of holiday stuff, got rid of 1/4 of my boxes, donated some books, got rid of 3/4 of kids school stuff, threw out two huge house plants that was dying, asked my youngest to bring down 10 stuff animals out of her room to downstairs because it was getting hard to manage her room, both bathrooms have less stuff in their storage or drawers, cleaned out everything under my bed (makes it so much easier to vacuum up all those dust bunnies underneath my bed), ... All this was done throughout the three weeks of being home because of the Cornavirus. Each task didn't really take that much time. It really does make my house run smoother when there are less things to manage.

I've been putting all my donate items in the trunk of my car. That way my space is decluttered and they're ready for when I CAN donate them. I've been checking in with my Mom by text/phone on the decluttering, yard work, honey-dos I've been knocking out daily... and it motivated her to start cleaning her craft room! We send each other before/after pix and it's been so encouraging! SO proud of her!!

On the wall that you are building to close in your stairs, put as many frames as you have children. Put up your favorite "picture/artwork" from each child in it. Swap it out with the next favorite picture/artwork within a week or a month (providing you've kept that week's/month's pile of art.) I did this for quite sometime with my grandson and loved it. We moved and haven't continued it and neither has he with art! It can be your bragging wall (that's what I called mine.) Maggie is growing so fast and is so cute. Great work Maggie.

Keeping my house picked up has helped my sanity. The things that are helping me are: keeping to a schedule, getting dressed, making the beds, Keeping the kitchen and bathrooms picked up and clean, etc. Even though it snowed today I wanted to start switching over winter to summer clothes and did not have the energy to decide what to keep or toss, so I cleaned out drawers, moved winter to the bottom drawers, refolded & organized (I stand everything on end). I put sticky dots on the summer clothes (I had boxes of those old reinforcements for paper holes) and I'm hoping they will show me what I'm wearing and what I should let go. My other idea (if the dots fall off) is to put a cardboard divider in each drawer and when I put laundry back I will put it to the left or to the front of the divider again showing what I'm wearing. I'm also making a small collection of work clothes for very messy jobs,

Instead of cooking I used the time to start decluttering. I minimized the kids room and made them help me. I then left them totally in charge of now keeping up with it. Ive minimized my wardrobe so it would help me get ready more efficiently. I always change the countertops but keep it super minimal. I have a open concept kitchen so it really holds me accountable!

New subscriber, came over from Clutterbug. Loved watching you declutter and your tips. I’m a fairly minimal person, but I do like to constantly evaluate my space and see if there is anything I’m not using. Right now with everything going on it has been very overwhelming. I’m isolating, but I’m still working outside of the home. So I live alone and haven’t seen my parents and friends in over a month, but I do work in an area that was deemed essential because my business has started making masks for government. I go to work which I am grateful to still have a job, but I am very distant from those around me in my job (so I can work all day and rarely see another person). It makes it less isolating in some ways but more in others. But it has made it so I don’t want to do anything when I get home. My usually very clean home has seen some clutter recently. Thank you for the motivation. I think I’m going to try the 2 minute tidy.

Today when I emptied out a catch-all bag in my closet I moved the bag near my entry way so I can dump items in that would just get tossed and not for donation. As I see something to toss, in the bag it goes. Especially enjoy your decluttering tip videos!

I am still in a 27 month renovation, so I can really relate to clutter driving me crazy. The end is in sight, and I want to do more decluttering. We got rid of almost half of our furniture when we started, but people helped pack boxes, and I would love to open and go through. There is no room because my husband's tools are everywhere. The boxes have been on the balcony and patio getting green from pine pollen and sagging from humidity. Thanks for letting me vent.

Thanks for showing us the mess on the counter! So relatable:))Truly every day is spent cleaning up and putting away something. Very helpful suggestions, I can't wait to try this. It reminds me of the fly lady.
Just a note I love my submersion blender. I use it weekly and often in place of my hand mixer. for mashing Beans; making mashed Potatoes; scrambling eggs- for breakfast, and French toast batter. Home made apple sauce, Blending sauces made with stewed vegetables and gravies on the stove top especially when I have gotten distracted and didn't combine things properly. Like when I hastily added more flour or cornstarch because it was still too thin 🤦‍♀️I also use it for Whipped cream, and of course occasionally soups. Hope this helps. To store the cord I tied a dollar store ribbon around the base of the plug, and when I fold( not wind) up the cord I have a pretty way of tying it up with a pretty bow. Hope this helps💖

I have been keeping the kitchen tidy since our kitten is getting into everything (plastic ties, bags of lettuce, crumbs in the sink). It does help me to have more mental energy knowing everything had been put away. I've been decluttering even more in the last month to minimize since we were already planning to buy a new house. It feels great aside from having the donation bags pile up in the dining room. So many $store bowls!

Started with closets and moved on to the garage which has been a mess forever. De cluttered and organized the whole thing.,you are spot on with the bite at a time approach. I took one section at a time in the garage and got it done in a matter of 4 days. FOUR DAYS. For something that’s been driving me nuts for YEARS. Thanks for the great videos, you are right, it’s so important right now to have our homes be a place we can look around and be relaxed in and not an added source of anxiety,

You are such an inspiration! Our German apartment is full...six of us here and so many material possessions. But letting go of things is hard for all of us. What if we might need it one day? I could use this sometime... And so we suffer from that "stuff" stress every day. I would LOVE to have clean counters! But I have so much stuff in my small kitchen... And there is no storage space so everything is in our apartment...even our camping gear, Christmas decorations, and baby items for when we have a foster baby. (And if I am honest, all the clothes that I dream of fitting in again some day.) I wish someone would help me go through my home asking me if I really need to keep all these things and then help me get them out of the apartment for good. And I wish you were my real-life friend. So thankful for you. ~Heather

We moved to a new home and state two and a half months ago, so we're in the process of putting things away now that we're unpacked. Also, deciding what we're not going to be using in our new home, which is a completely different (more!)sq.ft/(a bungalow to a quad level) layout (a major challenge in itself!) and from a completely different era(1918 to 1966)! Most of our growing "getting rid of collection" has to stay put due to current COVID-19 restrictions on donating to charities.

We are a family of four. We live in a house that is 1100 ft.². My kids have been virtual schooling for four weeks now. The stress of being home, virtual schooling, pandemic and all has made a even the slightest bit of clutter completely overwhelming for me. Anxiety is sky high and it gives me massive urge to purge. Having been on my minimalist journey for about three years now there isn’t a ton of stuff left to get rid of that is mine, or that I’m somewhat in control of such as kid things. My husband is, not in the truest sense of the word but in comparison to me, a hoarder. He’s also a clutter bug. His stuff is pushing me over the edge and leading by example hasn’t gotten us anywhere.

I have been living without a lot of things and once we finally move I am sure I will purge again. However! There have been several items that I wish I had right now but they are in storage. Pie plates and bread pans are some of them. But... like you said if you can replace it for under $20 hey it's ok. Right now I am boxing up more items for the move so it is a little crazy with boxes everywhere. But that's ok. My day to day hasn't changed a whole lot so I am thankful for that. I've always done better in person and find online interactions stilted and awkward. Maybe I'll be able to get better with it over time but with my disabilities it usually takes me a long time to learn new skills. I might have it down by September if this keeps up.
I'm ok with the actual virus and how to minimize risks given my pre-disability profession of Medical Laboratory Technologist. My medical professional friends are busy working and the rest of them are freaking out. The folks that are working don't have the time or energy, and the folks that are freaking out need support.
I mostly commented to bring awareness to solo folks. We exist. Our struggles are real.
