    In most anime after a character dies, they grief for a moment and then they completely forget them and never mention them again. However in aot, you can see that death of side character from season 1 is still relevant even in the final episodes of the series. I love how human aot is.

      @@Karuiko It's hard to put into words. He literally wanted nothing more of Reiner to hear, especially not how bad he felt for doing it because he (wrongly) interprets it as an attempt to rid himself of the guilt of killing Marco. For Reiner, it's a genuine confession and he wants to be punished. But for Jean, those reasons sound like cheap excuses.

      @catsozen Před 10 měsíci +225

      @@Karuiko Jean is basically saying "do you think you can get away with this by just saying you're sorry!?"
      He was already seething when Reiner started playing the victim, but that "I'm sorry" just sends him. To him, Reiner should own his actions and carry that burden of guilt, while redeeming himself by doing the right thing. Instead he just had to add that part about killing the titan that kills Marco as if it absolves his sin even for a bit, and then has the gall to ask for forgiveness from Jean.
      It was rock bottom pathetic for Reiner to act that way.

    I understand why Jean snapped. It’s one thing someone killed your friend, it’s another thing someone killed your friend and then they feel guilty about it. Reiner doesn’t get to be sorry or feel guilty because he made that cruel decision. It was already bad enough that Marco was killed, but the fact that Reiner started feeling sorry for himself, he indirectly made the situation about himself instead of Marco, the actual victim. He took accountability but then turned around to self-loathe.

      @@MachinaOwl Really? I rarely see anyone blame Annie. Most are super forgiving and like to use the excuse that she was a victim of circumstance brought about by her father and Marley. While it not entirely untrue, Annie was far from just a helpless victim. She was pretty cold blooded and that's what made her such a great antagonist in the beginning. Reiner and Bertholdt's stories were done so well, but I'm disappointed that Annie basically got off with just a slap on the wrist. She never got any punishment for all the soldiers she killed. She appears like the regrets her actions, yet at the same she admitted that she didn't regret what she did. She got to reunite with her dad and even got a boyfriend out of the deal. I see some say that her time in the crystal was her punishment, but she was safe that whole time and even had Armin and Hitch talking to her. Reiner basically shouldered all of the blame. Annie should have at least had some punishment.

    One of the best things about attack on titan is that both jean and marco were nobodies. Nothing side characters that got as much screentime as a miriad of other side characters, expected to be fodder. Yet jean lived, jean became something. If the story went slightly differently, could the same not have happened with marco, or the rest of the side cast? The simple fact of the matter is that Levi is usually the most level headed person in the room. He wouldn't prioritize his own personal vendetta over getting the important shit done. In this case, even if he wasn't injured, what purpose would killing Annie serve? Avenging his comrades who died in battle? They were soldiers in a regiment where the vast majority usually die terribly. That was always a risk and Levi isn't naive enough to have not understood that. Annie was carrying out a mission, there was nothing personal involved. As wrathful as he was over his OG squad's deaths, he was out the second the objective was complete and we never heard him talk of revenge for his squad in the aftermath. Why would Levi then choose to make it personal, years later? That's childish and it usually isn't Levi. Annie is a highly skilled warrior, has the power of one of the Nine Titans and is currently their ally. What is the gain here?
      For all Levi's pragmatism, Zeke actually is a weak point for him. Zeke's flippant toying with the lives of others, lack of remorse for his heinous actions and the overall arrogance in which he brazenly presents himself opposes Levi on a fundamental level. Remember, Levi was devastated upon realizing that he, humanity's strongest soldier, had in fact been killing humans every time he slaughtered a titan. Zeke is his antithesis. Zeke couldn't be bothered to learn the name of the village that he titanized; Ragako being the hometown of one of Levi's immediate subordinates added even more fuel to that fire. Sure, we remember Annie yoyo-ing humans and stomping on them like insects. However, Levi was there to personally witness Zeke using Erwin and the other survey corps members as target practice; Zeke was gleefully enjoying murdering them in droves. He turned their tragic, heroic, desperate suicide charge into little more than a baseball game and was openly yipping like a cheerful child. It's not simply about fulfilling Erwin's final order, Levi genuinely hates Zeke Yaeger. Yet still Levi looks at the bigger picture and does not kill him. He knows how vital Zeke is, so he puts his own wants and, essentially, Erwin's last command on the backburner. He doesn't trust Zeke at all, he figures he'll eventually betray them but he wouldn't move unless Zeke proved him right. Him not killing Zeke was equivalent to letting his comrades' sacrifice, his best friend's sacrifice, go to waste.
      He still didn't do it.
      Zeke titanizing Levi's subordinates in the forest, reducing their lives to fodder and callously weaponizing the close bond Levi shared with them? Well. Everyone has a limit and that was Levi's. Zeke had just proven him correct in the worst way and, while he had the sense not to kill him, Levi prioritized his personal hatred of Zeke over his logical side. Torturing Zeke, setting up that reckless death trap was nothing more than an act of vengeance. His hatred toward Zeke was more than justified but him slicing off his legs, inch by inch, was for Levi and Levi only. He was pissed and he wanted revenge. He let his feelings cloud his better judgement for the first time; a rational Levi would not have set up the thunder spear trap that the vengeful Levi did. And what did he gain from this? Well, we all know the answer to that question.
      In summary, revenge is as petty and childish concept that has zero benefits beyond a fleeting catharsis. And comparing Levi's treatment of Zeke with his apparent lack of hatred towards Annie doesn't make sense. Levi abhors everything that Zeke stands for.

      Despite everything else, and everything that Reiner did, I think Reiner was still his friend -- by the end of the series, even if it would be a "payback" of sorts for what happened to Marco, one friend's death doesn't bring back another, and Reiner's death would have been another blow, especially if he chose to let Reiner die. He's angry at him here, but he holds it together until Reiner starts being all "woe-is-me" about Marco's death. I think hearing Marco's final words could have helped him to move on, too. The fact that Annie and Pieck just let Reiner get the shit beaten out of him… I’m starting to think that the Survey Corps members still like Reiner more than the other warriors like him, even after everything he’s done to them

      In the manga annie tended to Reiner after jean attacked him, she gently Reiner's head and placed something under his head i think. In the anime it was cut from the episode.
