Calcified DEER SKULL Discovered at the Bottom of this Cave

  • Come along with us as we explore this vertical cave in Alabama where we come across a calcified deer skull. The deer at some point fell into the pit and landed below a wall of flowstone. Over the years it has built up a rock layer on top of the skull. Also in this pit are the remains of a "lost dog".
This cave has two drops, which makes it what we call a multi-drop cave. The second drop has a bit of a challenge as you squeeze through a passage and go over the second pit before you can climb down to it. At the bottom of the second pit, it opens up into a nice large chamber.
Unfortunately, lots of small animals have succumbed to their death in this pit as we show many different bones in the bottom.

Yes, it was. I'm trying to figure out if it's the rock itself that's blue, or some kind of algae growth or possibly a mineral deposited on the surface of the rock. Just really nice color!

Cave must have a good bit of water flow at times to scatter the bones so deep in it.

Yea it's kinda interesting to ponder how this deer got here and how old it is.

Looked like a bit of a tricky cave. I would think the frase " I'm stuck" isn't something you wouldn't normally want to hear while caving, but if you are the middle person, maybe not as bad.

Yea wasn't expecting the squeeze and then being right on top of the next pit!

Why so many dogs? And the animals were farther back in the cave?

Probably hunting dogs, unfortunately animals will fall into these sinkholes as they are running through the woods.
