  • The BBC has launched the World News Komla Dumor Award for 2022. The award was established seven years ago to honour Komla Dumor, an exceptional Ghanaian broadcaster and presenter for BBC World News, who died suddenly aged 41 in 2014.
It seeks to find a rising star of African journalism with journalists living and working in Africa invited to apply. The Komla award aims to uncover and promote fresh talent from across the continent, and has come to mean a lot for young journalists as well as the family of Komla.
Victoria Rubadiri, the 2020 winner of this prestigious award paid a visit to Komla’s widow Kwansema Dumor and two of his kids, Elorm and Araba Dumor.

I saw him when i used to work at Fiesta Royale Hotel in Ghana.
As soon as I saw him, i was full of excitement so I called his name: KOMLA and his response was so warm, he started chatting with me as if he knew me.
He was such a sweet soul.

I never leave CZcams comments but when I was an American high schooler watching him on Focus on Africa was what I did every day after school. He helped foster my passion for African affairs and politics and I still remember how shocked I was to hear of his passing.

I miss him so much, i still remember to this day how shocked and saddened I was finding out he died on that January night, if it wasn’t for Komla and focus on Africa, I would have still been horrified by just negative stories of the continent of Africa, and his efforts along with the programme itself help changed that narrative and got me over my fears of images of famine in Ethiopia, for instance, and also too inspired me to do the same with my now passion for Europe and to have balanced reporting about European news stories too

Komla, thank you for the soundbites and the memories. I remember Mobitel Traffic Watch with Komla on the streets of Accra and Tommy Annan Forson in the Joy FM studios then to Komla's signature Super Morning Show and then to BBC. You did it all; and made Ghana so so proud of you. To Kwansema and the lovely kids, your Dad was the GOAT!!! Take that to the bank. Personally he was one year ahead of me at Legon in the late nineties. He was on the P block of Legon Hall (and a room mate to a very good friend at the time, now a medical doctor - Jonathan Banibensu) while I was on the K and subsequently the M blocks. Saw and interacted with him a few times. He was larger than life and always wore an infectious inviting smile. Always welcoming. Komla, you are sorely missed!!!
