"They don't make skis for two people." "Right... they used to not make skis for anybody, Chris. And somebody started making skis!" I need this kind of determination in my life.
Banff all the way! We host the festival each year for our CVN ski team fundraiser in Eau Claire, to see skiing featured or work with them on including a submission would be special!!!
Great video production. This was (I believe*) the fourth time the Birke was skied on tandem skis. Gordy Backmann and I were the 3rd* about 20 years ago. The first* was a brother sister duo from the Hayward area and then Bjorn Arves?? . We used a pair of stiff 215cm Karhu (Red) race skis. We had old crappy Profil boots and had matching blue and yellow one-piece suits. Due to it being a low snow year our "training" consisted of poling 15 minutes on a lake. We were clueless. We used klister which was appropriate.... right up until it started snowing at the start. We did not stride, we trudged. Transitions were the hardest as often we would fall, one facing forward and one back. After a bit our skis were so iced up we had 2” of snow caked on the base. We saw a spectator with a big hunting knife and borrowing it, scraped off most of the klister.( he was a good sport) Downhills, what with no or poor tracks were just a point and pray exercise. They were surprisingly fast as we passed a lot of people going down, not so many going up. We ended up finishing in about 4:40 (?) with me beating Gordy by .01 second :) We had our photo taken a lot and people at the feed zones would ask us to stop for photos and a laugh. Would I do it again? No, but after the pain wore off we did do a few bike races on a tandem. If you ever try it be sure you are really good friends with your partner and keep on trudging.
Was that the year Tim Caldwell won? I can see your name on the time sheet, but no Gordy. Would you come out of retirement for a tandem v tandem with these two?
A claim that this was done before doesn't diminish this at all. There was probably sometwo before that in some other race around the world. Their story, the documentation of the journey, and the likely critical change that occurs is what is makes them the fathers of a new sport. Epic.
This is pure gold. I think what is needed though is a Tandem outfit. A flexible membrane between two ski suits and maybe even some aerodynamic foam attached to the back of the rear skier.
My comment is not intended to diminish anything you two did. I think your creative effort needs to be applauded, especially as you made a significant investment in equipment, training, dedication, and the purchase of two bibs. Congratulations!!!! Who knows, next year there may be more in attempt to beat your time.
We appreciate that but if it wasn't for our strict diet of White Castle fish sandwiches, Beyond Sliders, and onion chips none of this would have been possible.
Visionaries ... the plural kind. Nice work you two! We are very much looking forward to seeing how the race goes for you two ... champions, dare I say?
It's never been done before, so we gotta go for it. Well, thanks for keeping that American pioneer spirit alive guys! Way to represent what this country has always been all about. And congrats on your Birkie. Aka badass.
This was both hilarious and inspiring! I've only seen tandem skiing once before and I thought maybe it could be used to teach someone skiing, or maybe help someone with a disability to ski. But it doesn't look easy, you really gotta work together. 😅 You guys became so in-sync.
I almost walked out on this film at the Banff Film festival. Feeling sick and tired and I was thinking this is the dumbest thing I will ever see, like what are they going to do? Pole for 50 kms? I stayed 2 mins too long, and have not laughed so hard in way too long. I am sharing this with all of my skiing buddies, THANK YOU!
Attended the Banff Mountain Film Festival last two nights here in Duluth. You guys killed it! This was definitely a crowd favorite this year. Very fun.
I used to work at a Nordic Ctr., and we had a pair of tandem skis just for fun. I used them several times with my friend…I am 6’5”….she is 5’2”…the differences in our stride length were pretty comical!
You guys are incredible !!!! Skating was found by an american Bill Koch and you are the héritage! I like soo much your passion and pushing the boundaries !!! You are brilliant ! Greatings from 🇫🇷❤
Congratulations, but Bjorn Arvness did this in the early 80’s. They skied the skis as one person, striding up the hills, and managed the down hills effortlessly, as Bjon was a former Olympian.
This is awesome. Now I know there is a Birkebeinerrenn over seas too, what a pleasant surprise. I should probably known this but, hey every day you learn something new. This reminds me of my youth growing up in Norway.
Yes in fact the Birkie actually started when a group of snowmobilers in Cable Wisconsin had to escort a toddler aged Packers fan by the name of Hank Hankonsson to a bar 55 kilometers away in the city of Hayward Wisconsin so he could escape the reckless heckling of all the Vikings fans who migrate to the city of Cable around this time of year. I think there was a race in Norway that copied it or something.
The algorithm is strong with this one! First video in 7 years from this channel and already has more than ten-fold the views of the next most viewed video. I'm not saying it doesn't deserve it, it does. This was a great watch!
this is so fucking sick. got into xc end of last winter and snuck as much in as i could. awesome to see a different/hilarious take on the xc ski vid! this shit is gold.
I was wondering what kind og "Birken" this was when I saw ppl skating, then I saw the bib reading American Birkebeiner I immediately understood more. I dont understand why some do waddle around on skis trying ty skate when theyre obviously not even close. Classic is so much more energy consuming, if you dont know skating. Edit; Creds for doing this so "effortlessly". It was fun to watch.
You guys passed me at the birkie, flawless, silent and in tune with each other, I was baffled and couldn’t wrap my head around it for many K’s!
This is a glorious image

I need this kind of determination in my life.
The kind of determination fueled by Crave Cases and onion chips.
The Star Craving Wolf.❤
Bravo - this is so funny, well shot, and produced. You guys should submit this to Banff - pitch perfect.
About 2 minutes in I was going "dang, this would be perfect for Banff"
We will absolutely submit to Banff. Thanks for the tip
I had the same thought. Would love to see this on the Banff circuit next year!

BULLLSHIT

legend
To quote one of the all time great winter sports movies...
"Feel the rhythm! Feel the rhyme! Get on up, its tandem time! Cool Runnings!"
A claim that this was done before doesn't diminish this at all. There was probably sometwo before that in some other race around the world. Their story, the documentation of the journey, and the likely critical change that occurs is what is makes them the fathers of a new sport. Epic.
revolutionary. The spirit of the birkie is preserved by you both
I thought the tangle of legs skis and poles was bad enough when falling on my own!
This is fantastic 🤣
This absolute crushed at the Banff screening I was at last night. Clsoed the night and the entire theater was dying laughing. Great job.
This is pure gold. I think what is needed though is a Tandem outfit. A flexible membrane between two ski suits and maybe even some aerodynamic foam attached to the back of the rear skier.
😂“Literally never been done?” Say what ? 😂 2 pairs of tandem wood skis, converted in the 70s, in my house right now!
Discovered via Banff. We all laughed so much. Amazing effort and story. Bravo guys
This was a very good video I don't even ski but the editing and comedy mixed in made this a truly enjoyable video. Keep up the good work

This is pure awesomeness! So what's next ... tandem *skating* the Birkie???
Good luck guys, you should swap bibs for kicks
I love that he sees the stick figure drawing and his first thought is, “They don’t make skis for two people.”
No idea why this was in my feed, never ski’d in my life, but this was entertainment
I am so impressed by how well you guys became. It's obvious how much practice this took but, wow, you looks like naturals.
We appreciate that but if it wasn't for our strict diet of White Castle fish sandwiches, Beyond Sliders, and onion chips none of this would have been possible.

Holy crap the camerawork on this was insanely good!
I greatly enjoyed your film in the Banff mountain film fest world tour! Hello from Cleveland Ohio
words cannot describe my joy! This is so awesome that you guys did this! BRAVO!!!
I should be working, but i'm instead I'm watching two grown men on one pair of ski's...and it's majestic.
Incredible. I’m so invested in the journey. Looking forward to part 2!
It's never been done before, so we gotta go for it. Well, thanks for keeping that American pioneer spirit alive guys! Way to represent what this country has always been all about. And congrats on your Birkie. Aka badass.
Cinematography, plot, planning & execution, action, drama, comedy, suspense, and revenge. It's all there!
This was both hilarious and inspiring! I've only seen tandem skiing once before and I thought maybe it could be used to teach someone skiing, or maybe help someone with a disability to ski. But it doesn't look easy, you really gotta work together. 😅 You guys became so in-sync.
I NEED part 2. Videos like this are the reason CZcams was awesome in the first place.

I have no idea why CZcams recommended this to me, but this is amazing! I can't wait for part 2
This is so funny, you guys are pretty clever. I gotta show this to my husband, who is known XC-ski coach and see if he will laugh or cry 😂.
We watched this at the Banff film festival and it garnered hundreds of laughs and was an audience favorite.
The funniest part of this is how good they got lol
Sitting in the car tandem too **chef's kiss**
Absolutely wonderful!
This was hilarious, loved it. Hooked for part 2.

I couldn’t quit smirking. Loved it!
This is so completely awesome!
This is amazing! Good luck
WONDERFUL! hilarious and beautiful at the same time! : )
This is exactly what i needed today. God bless you two lmao
And may eternal fish sandwiches be dined upon you

Just watched the news do a piece on yall doing the Beirk can't wait to see PT 2!!
Y’all are cool, also gonna have to check out this ski shop if I ever want to get back into cross country.
This reminds me of the plot to Blades of Glory 😂 I love it

Just like Blades of Glory except on skis. Reminds me of the scene with two hot dogs in one bun
Like if you want to see Part 2 NOW
This is giving strong blades of glory vibes
Pass the groan. Every decision has made pants even more difficult
I just subscribed to track this journey! Very intriguing, fellas!
tandom bikes are one thing. Literally being attached to your partner by a solid ski, that's next level.
this is so fucking sick. got into xc end of last winter and snuck as much in as i could. awesome to see a different/hilarious take on the xc ski vid! this shit is gold.
Fun! Glad to see that I actually saw what I thought I saw at OO. 😂

this is both hilarious and ingenious
Great story. That you are still friends is a victory.
Just got recommended this video - great job! Hopefully this is the start of a big algorithm boost!

This is amazing and I need to see how this story continues
Best CZcams video I’ve ever watched. Bravo
gem of the algorithm. i have no interest in cross country skiing, but was captivated by this silly idea. and the editing is well done too i must say
This is like a tim and eric sketch that was taken too seriously.
This is phenomenal
This is like rowing with cross-country skies.
awesome. would love to see tandem park skiing. think of the possibilities!
Amazing video. Wow!
Awesome vid!
this is such a midwestern vibe. the white castle is essential
Love this. What spirit!!! Please expand and submit to a film fest.
Cinematic masterpiece
Congrats on your accomplishment and on your friendship
Great film.
You guys are scary good at tandem skiing
Actually made cross-country skiing interesting wow
Don't know how I came across this, but I like it. :)
I hope whoever's gonna be on the end of a snow-plow is hyper flexible hahaha
Looks like a fun way to twist a knee 😆
Fun experience though!

I died laughing. Awesome.🤣
Nailed the doc style LOL
Once again, youtube recommends me some excellent content
this might just be the best thing
I’ve seen you guys at elm!! I ski for a highschool and it was kinda cool to see you guys
Just kinda trying to inspire the next generation
@@chrisparr21 I was there the day you were trying to climb the hill and figuring out how to do it, nice work!!
Loving your relationship!! I haven't ever seen anything about skying but I got so engaged on the story.
Such an underrated video
You bastard! Left me on a cliffhanger. Well, I'm invested now.
