Cutting Large Beams

- We bought a used pergola that was a demo at a lumber yard. It was built to show 2 different design styles. I needed a way to cut one end of a large beam to match the curved style.

Thank you to demonstrate the power of a jigsaw. It's very inspiring. This video helps me get rid of the idea to get a band saw, as I already have a jigsaw.
Claytoy Shieh please see above response
A Fantastic demonstration!... A very ambitious cut for a jigsaw.... I would have thought this cut would be impossible with the little Black and Decker Jigsaw... It performed this MONSTER curved cut without going up in smoke! ... How long did each beam take to cut? ... For those DIY's who have a limited supply of tools it was enlightening... Well done and thanks.
That poor little fella got into a big stress on the wood 😆
I did my curved end pergola beams with a portable bandsaw. One of the handheld units. less chance of blade deflection.
I left my line plus an 1/8th or so that I finished nice and smooth with a template router bit and my plywood template.
Crazy , and i'm having trouble cutting 2.5 inch with a 2 inch blade. I need that monster. Thanx for the demo.☀
Thanks for showing that. I was astonished when I saw the tech specs of regular jig saws which even the cordless ones are supposed to have something like 135mm cutting capacity "in wood". That is a lot more than many band saws and most tablesaws. I wonder what it is like in hardwood (this seems to be pine or fir or something?)
Cool. For DIY wood jobs this more than enough than big table saws and atuff

I have had some similar cuts but much more detailed. The solution I came up with was to place the beam on the rungs of 2 ladders. I then put wheels on the base of my shop bandsaw. I used the bandsaw like a giant jigsaw. Works perfectly and very fast too.
That's a great way to do it. I have a smaller bandsaw now on casters....at the time of this video, I had a 1950's all cast iron bandsaw that weighed a ton. It would have been impractical to move around. My 14" bandsaw now is much easier to move. :)
Cool. Keep it up. Your work looked great anyway.

Really Nice, saves cost of a ban saw. Thank You 👍
Is that hardwood? Because I have exactly the Same shape in hardwood...id be surprised if the B&D gets through it. By the way, filing down the rough cuts with a rasp works brilliantly
If I was faced with this challenge I would do a series of straight cuts down to the line with a sawzall first. Knock out the tabs that would be left with a hammer, and then afterwards use the jigsaw for cleanup.
thanks, I was not sure how I would cut curved lines on my future pergola...keep thinking about a band saw, but this prove what I heard that a jig saw can do the job. I have to find it first though :-)
I wish I could have used my band saw....but the size of the beams wouldn't allow it to be done. I think if you were doing smaller lumber....then maybe the band saw would work (if you had room to swing the boards around). Good luck and keep me posted.

Would you use the pendulum action to cut wood that thick? That was a good bit of wood to cut.
I need this blade! Not available in my country! 😞
If your sabre saw had a pendulum setting the cut would have went faster and easier because it would have cleared the sawdust more efficiently. I have those blades but never used them, good to see they work well. You did a nice job.

What jigsaw are you using
will these blades fit on a ryobi??
By using a bigger blade will that stop the blade from wondering??
you should put water too
Funciona para cortes rectos?
No se deforma?
And with a $35 Black & Decker too lol… dang!
Based on my experience, it's a piece of work pushing it with a 10 inch blade, especially when pieces are glued together!
part number for the blades?????
what is the code jigsaw blade bosch sir

My adventure with woodworking started with Stodoys.
Wtf are all you people talking about!!! All bad people!! First of all, amazing that a 3$ black and decker POS jigsaw worked at all. Amazing. Second of all, if that cut is 90 degrees and square I’ll be floored. 5/8 thick blade making turns is not ideal. And a jigsaw is the absolute wrong tool!!! Ok, if you were a professional you would buy a portable bandsaw to do this cut. It’s about 1500$ -8000$ and I get it if your just doing a couple of cuts not to want to buy one. You could have your lumber yard cut it for 8$ a cut but you would have to transport it, or buy from them, which is what you should of done anyways. I get the inconvenience in that too although it should of been part of the plan when you picked those things up. So then you have to think🤔 how did the cowboys do it?? The old English ?? Germans in the 1800s 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔 a coping saw or a bow saw would do the trick my friend. Simple hand saw and it would do the job faster and more efficient than your sons bob the builder jig saw. Please throw that thing in the trash, it’s not my intention to be disrespectful to you, but as a man who has devoted his life to woodworking, it’s offensive when you buy literally the cheapest tools to do the job yourself as if there should be the word “just” associated with my life’s work. I “just” have to do this and”just” have to buy that and “just” cut whatever. Buy a real tool so you can do it right the first time and if you don’t know which is the right tool, it’s the expensive one, it’s expensive for a reason. Don’t listen to people who say otherwise, they are cheap and money rules thier lives
Jeez, the guy had a few curved cuts to make and took the economical way out. You make it seem like he's an idiot and failure. I believe he made an excellent compromise. My qualifications to arrive at that decision? I'm 65 and been in the building trades my entire life.
Can't talk about tools without a tool snob showing up to tell you how wrong you're doing it.
"... A 3$ black and decker POS jigsaw.." .: "Please throw that thing in the trash..." !!!??? - That is an unfair stupid and absurd criticism... Just plain silly. Why should he buy the "proper tool" according to you. I think it worked really well for him and i applaud him for performing the difficult curved cut... CZcams solutions are known for unusual problem solving... You have no understanding of that... It is about Innovation and making do... AND it is NOT about being "cheap.. "and money rules their lives
..."
Shut up please
Wrong color tool. Stick with Blue, Yellow, Red, or Green
