Here is a question that a lot of learners struggle with: do you stop reading to look up the definition or just continue?
This highlights the difference between:
Intensive reading: when you read to learn new words and analyze the language.
Extensive reading: where you don't stop and you read for pleasure.
More on my reading for fluency method soon but first...
HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT BOOK FOR YOU:
1. The genre: the category. Choose books that interest you.
2. The level of the book: if it's too difficult to understand, you won't enjoy it and it won't help you. Choose graded readers. See here: • BOOKS IN ENGLISH: WHY ...
3. Books you enjoy: if you don't enjoy the book, put it down.
FINDING BOOKS (GREAT TIP!)
Go to www.amazon.com and "look inside" a book that you may enjoy. Start reading it and get it if you think it's appropriate.
Find books with audiobooks too.
INTENSIVE vs EXTENSIVE READING:
I recommend that you do both. Here is how:
1. Read extensively but highlight words (sentences that you don't understand)
2. Do this for each chapter or for a certain number of pages
3. Go back and look up anything you don't understand
BONUS TIP:
Take the sentences that you have highlighted and use Anki - apps.ankiweb.net/ - to create flashcards.
This is a way to internalize the new language and grammar.

Hi, Jack,
as I remember it is said: "there's always a first time". So I have just made Slovak subtitles for the first time for your lesson.
Good English story book is good for learning english.
Hi Jack, this is the first time when I see your channel thank you so much for your advices 1bout reading in english . I h1ve a question please, how is called the the back covor of a book that contains like a summary ?
Thx for telling us! So helpful even a point was mentioned by many language teachers in HK.
Thanks for the Video! Apologies for chiming in, I am interested in your initial thoughts. Have you tried - Millawdon Future Ticket Trick (erm, check it on google should be there)? It is a great one off guide for teaching children to read minus the hard work. Ive heard some incredible things about it and my friend Sam after many years got astronomical results with it.
First book I've ever read in English was "A Walk to Remember" by N.Sparks. And I could read it extensively, there were very few unknown words probably because it is quite a modern book with simple language.
Another easy book is "The Beach" by Alex Garland, it is also written in modern and simple language. There is a bit of slang vocabulary but it seemed useful to know it.
One more great book is "Gone with the wind", at first it seemed too complicated to me, especially those sophisticated descriptions of nature and people's looks, in addition there were lots of obsolete and archaic vocabulary. I simply couldn't get the idea of a character's appearance without looking up every second adjective. But after several pages it became quite easy since I had already memorized some 'new' words and I could recognize them further in the book. If you survived the introduction and description parts, you can really enjoy the rest.
Later after having read the book, I wanted to use the vocabulary I'd learned and it was a tricky thing because I always had this fear to say something in an old-fashioned way.
Once in my teens, I read a lot of Russian classics (my native language is Russian) and my peers ceased to understand me :D
I started reading in English and French few months ago but I stopped because I found a lot of new vocabulary and I was hesitated between looking up about each word meaning or just coming across and continue to read. I fell so frustrated and disappointed about my week vocabulary. But now, I think that I won't struggle again because I will use your method.
Thanks a lot 💝💝💝
Thank you, Jack, for the interesting and useful tips!
Hi Jack, your videos has helped me a lot.. thanks a ton.
I've been learning from you a lot, i really appreciate your efforts, my thankful for you.
Good job.
Hi jack,
Thank you again for this useful video, you have an amazing way to explain everything. Well, to be frank, I used to use intensive reading, and because of this method, I get bored sometimes because I feel like every word is new for me, I had to look for its meaning every time; moreover it takes a lot of time to complete the book. That's why I think I should choose the extensive reading which will probabely help me to enjoy the book and also to gain new words after highlighting them.
Thank you very much again.
Excellent Jack,Thanks beyond measures for sharing such a useful techniques.
thank you for taking the time to teach us we appreciate that
I've be been reading "Holes", written by Louis Sachar. I believe it has an upper-intermediate English. I believe I've been improving my English ever since.
Oxford has a good selection of books based on your level, and in the end of the book there are some exercises to do.
I've read one of the their books and it was interesting, not boring at all.
Can you mention the name of those books?

Hey!! thanks for your piece of advice, it's been useful!!
Here are some of the books I've read and recommend
Tales of Mystery and Imagination, Edgar Allen Po
- Sherlock Holmes Short Stories, Arthur Conan Doyle both for intermediate to advanced level.
Four Weddings And a Funeral by Richard Curtis, Cherry Gilchrist for Intermediate Level.
Reading biographies can be a fun way to engage with the story and not put the book down. Cheers!
Thank you, I'm reading the stories of Sherlock 🔎
"Four weddings and a funeral". I got the book when I ordered a course book for my preparation lessons. I didn't manage to read the whole book but I agree with you, it's good for intermediate speakers.
Hi, and what about the book called The Lucky One, of Nicholas Sparks? Someone know this book?
What books do you recommend for beginers?
Excellent Video clip! Sorry for butting in, I would love your thoughts. Have you thought about - Millawdon Future Ticket Trick (should be on google have a look)? It is a good one of a kind product for teaching children to read without the normal expense. Ive heard some decent things about it and my mate at last got cool success with it.
I'm Arabian and I understood everything thanks to you and the way you speak English, loved you at once I heard you.
A million thanks to you Mr. Jack.

hello Jack!
I've done intensive and extensive reading but I've found it tiring and boring because I felt I didn't go much further,
but I'll try it again, the thing is that I am not quiet patience, but I'll do it again in order to improve my English.
Thanks for your advice!!!
"The Giver" by Lois Lowry is a great example of book for beginners and intermediate students. The book is just about 100 pages, but the plot and vocabulary are really exciting.

I really like your channel when it comes to learning english.I think you are under rated.I can understand 98% of you.
Love and respect.
The method is easy to follow. I do most of the steps when reading in Spanish and English. Thx.
Reading Wealth of Nations has been an excellent English learning experience for me. Though I have read only 40 percent of it, my ability to quickly read through and understand complex sentences, that are 50 - 100 words long and consisting of several commas, has improved by leaps and bounds.
I think motivational books are extremely easy to read for begginers ❤️

It is a greatful video Jack! I use speeches in English with subtitles. I watch them. It is good for Reading and Listening too.
Very well explained. ....
It's first so useful video about reading, at least on my opinion.
While I am learning Spanish I like to view videos on various methods. I do make flashcards but I make them hand written with sentence, not just he individual word. I find hand writing it down helps it stick. A few books that might be helpful are the Harry Potter series (intermediate), Chronicles of Narnia (high beginner-intermediate).
Super cool - thank you
Thaankk you so much
I 100% agree with you sir...by Experience you are absolutely right. Thank you for sharing. Much love from Morocco 😘😘😘
I recommend 'the house by the sea' 'the stranger' 📖 nice books to read, thanks for the tips jack!
Hi, Jack! Greetings from Shanghai, China! Thank you for your video -- I found your tips very useful and I'm definitely going to try them out. I've been reading "Lean In" and "Option B" by Sheryl Sandberg, who is the COO of Facebook. I enjoy reading them both because I find them very inspiring and well-written. I would say both books are suitable for English learners of the upper intermediate level (B2) to the advanced level (C1-C2). What's also good about these two books is that each chapter is relatively independent so you can select any one that looks the most appealing to you to start with.
Just wanna let you know that I've followed your channel for some time and I love it! I will keep watching it and recommend it to my friends and colleagues who love learning English. Thanks so much!!!
You Are Amazing dude.
Hi there again..Recently I read a nice book intitled Convitted written by Elizabeth Gilbert. I loved that book, actually it was a gift. I read it with pleasure, but, after every chapter I looked for the words I did’nt understand, but not the whole time, because I could pick up the meaning from the context. I was very proud of me👍
It's an amazing and useful method and thank you for sharing this 😍😍
