    Hi 6”4 and super skinny and I find it really annoying that clothing brands try and do things by such limited standards, meaning so many clothes don’t fit my body correctly. Especially when buying trousers, so many brands do a standard length, which is always too short for me and my ankles stick out this the bottom of the jeans drawing up my calves. Meaning I’m limited to buying jeans from brands that make dedicated long ones.
    Thanks for the great video

    Yes to skin tone! It's such an underrated aspect. I recently had my colours analysed, which is not necessary by any means, but it's been pretty life changing. Previously I stuck to darker colours and pure whites, both of which drain me of colour or make me look sickly, and I was afraid to wear colours. It turns out that oranges and reds are some of my best colours and I don't think I owned a single item of clothing in those colours beforehand. Now I feel super confident wearing those colours. Certain greens and blues also suit me really which is great because they are two of my favourite colours. Don't get wrong, I don't limit myself to only buying clothes in certain colours now. I still buy stuff I like that doesn't suit my skin tone, but it's saved me a load of money now that I don't buy things that I know would look dreadful on me.

    Great video as always, James. I would like to see some examples of rule of thirds without the shirt being tucked in please. I generally speaking, don’t like tucking in casual shirts, unless I’m wearing a cardigan over it, then I’ll do a French tuck in the front sometimes.

    • @JamesLeung
      @JamesLeung  Před 4 měsíci +2

      Thank you! 😊 yes I should have included a few examples without the tuck. My best advice is to go for the intentionally cropped or short length tops. A few brands make them now, or one of my cheat codes is to go to the women’s section because their tops are often shorter in length!

  • @RLSteffler
    @RLSteffler Před 4 měsíci +8

    Clothing these days is straight up made for overweight people. Every T shirt I buy even from more expensive brands is 4 inches too long and has 0 taper from chest to waist, so if you have a normal chest and a slim waist you can't tuck in without having it bunch up a ton. Even jeans no matter what fit you buy the back pockets are sewn on super low down the ass to hide it for fat people, meanwhile the higher pockets such as Wrangler's cowboy cut look way better on fit people.

    • @JamesLeung
      @JamesLeung  Před 4 měsíci

    You are correct my worse problem when shopping is length of clothing. I am not even short I am averge height but I have accepted that all my t-shirt, shirts and even jeans I buy will have to be tailored. So I add about 8 dollars to the price of any of these clothes when buying.

    I dont think the the rule of thirds always works for everyone. Im a shorter guy, with a shorter torso and a muscular build. If I lift my pants up I look stocky and stumpy and even shorter. So for me it has the opposite effect. It works really well for guys who have longer torsos tho.

    • @haveasmiletoday2814
      @haveasmiletoday2814 Před 4 měsíci +3

      I think it would work. The issue is you have to find the correct "third point" for point for yourself. Since you are quite stocky lifting your pants up might look weird so you need to find another way to create a third.
      I know as a girl with a short torso lifting my pants as high as recommended would look weird. This just means my third point is lower than someone with a longer torso.
      The rule of thirds can be achieved in different ways, not just the way a lot of youtubers apply it to themselves because all our bodies are different

    • @melonytoni9016
      @melonytoni9016 Před 4 měsíci +6

      @@JamesLeung For my build, its all about the silhouette. Usually Pants that are a little bit wider, but taper down from the knee to the ankle, best combined with boots. A slim fit shirt that complements my build and my small waist. And an overshirt or a jacket thats a little bit on the wider side again. Preferable also shorter in length since the shirt beneath it makes up for it.

    • @krpi7685
      @krpi7685 Před 4 měsíci +1

      I'm with you. Long legs, short stocky torso, good bit of muscle mass. No way in hell will I be tucking anything into my pants as the end result is plain comical. And if I don't have a top layer to cover things, tucking in means choosing between ugly bunching at the hip and a tighter "muscle fit". No thanks.
      For me it's all about getting clothes with perfect width and length so that I get a nice drape that hits just below belt line while covering the valley between my upper back and hips without bunching. Gives a nice silhouette and elongates my short torso a bit as to not look as stocky.
      But as said in the video, shirts are stupid long these days and having to size up for the extra room makes things way worse.

    The 'themes' thing is something I've been dwelling on a fair bit most recently. I notice that Daniel Simmons for example puts 'odd' things together in a fit, i.e loafers with a pair of tracky bottoms (if my memory serves me right). My conditioned brain tells me that these things together couldn't possibly work, yet it kind of does, I think. Maybe confidence plays a large part. I possibly spend an inordinate amount of my time thinking of 'optimal' fits, and I find myself battling with whether to pair particular pieces with others. Seeing others pull off combinations that I wouldn't have thought of makes me question my perception of what goes with what. Yet I don't quite have the confidence to follow suit!
    Great vid as usual by the way 👍

    • @martro_
      @martro_ Před 4 měsíci +2

      I think you can experiment if there are other things going on like silhouette. If I remember correctly DS paired tracks bottoms with loafers but the bottoms were cut straight and draped over the loafers like a classic trouser would. I think once you know what look you're going for and are confident in, you can start experimenting from that start point.

    • @JamesLeung
      @JamesLeung  Před 4 měsíci

      For sure it can work for some people mixing themes, and Daniel is a great example. Loafers and jeans is something I never thought would go together but they look great! I guess my reasoning for saying to stick to a theme is just for people who don’t have that confidence yet or are just struggling with their style in general. Thanks for watching!

    Hi James, really love the video, but I hope I can be more specific with ya. I hope I can get some help with my problem as I'm kind of in a rut. I'm short, 5'7 with disproportionately short legs and a long torso. I went with the short top, high-waisted bottoms route with my wardrobe, and while it works sometimes, I feel like for some reason my body still looks like a 50/50 split. I'm afraid if I go any shorter with my top, it will be very, very short and will be impractical for times when I lift my arms even just to grab something at chest level, let alone reach something any higher. My trousers, on the other hand, still make me short for some reason even if it is high-waisted.
    Any suggestions? 😅

    • @vulinh1378
      @vulinh1378 Před 4 měsíci

      I'm slightly above 5'8 so we're about the same height. My trick is to give your tshirt a partial tuck at the waist from time to time to give your outfit a bit of shape (a partial tuck to the side, not a french tuck), and then make sure your trousers/jeans fully drape over the shoes, covering most of the back of the shoes and touching the ground just a tiny bit. This can be achieve by going for baggy/bootcut bottoms. For shoes I'd recommend going for something with a slimmer silhouette, or with square toe. If you want something with a platform sole that's fine, just remember to pick something with a slimmer toe box, not wide, to create a streamline look from head to toe. For trousers that is a bit cropped or have no break over the shoes, it's best to go with high top boots, again to create that streamline look. Hope this helps!

    • @vulinh1378
      @vulinh1378 Před 4 měsíci

      oh and also, slimmer tops (applied to jackets and hoodies etc. as well, it doesn't really matter, you can go a bit bigger with those than with a t shirt but not too big) with wider pants. Works wonder trust me

      @vorpalmaze Před 4 měsíci

      @@vulinh1378 Thanks a lot man! These are great tips. It's exactly in line with the style I'm going for, which is smart pieces with a relaxed silhouette. I've incorporated full-length, relaxed bottoms in my wardrobe and I'm also a sucker for sneakers, especially the minimal and slim ones.
      I've yet to try doing any kind of tucks with my tops as I try to buy boxy and cropped tops, I assume the length would flatter my body, but sadly it still kind of looks long on me. I find that tops with a drop shoulder and loose torso with a mid-bicep sleeve length work for me, it's just really the length that needs more experimenting on. I love the shape it gives to my body. Will definitely try tucking it more, though! Thank you so much!

      In my experience keeping some length and rocking a messy/fringe style covers a receeding hairline the best. Its either that or you eventually commit to a full zero buzz which eliminates the hairline completely. However growing this out is then a painful experience because your hairline is on full display for months while you regrow thr fringe out. But i have to say having a short buzz is liberating and so low maintenance.

    The example you used for the "1/2" fit doesn't make any sense, all of those peices fit that person well. It's never as simple as "high waisted trouser with tucked in t shirt looks better". That is one look out of many that can be achieved, it's completely arbitrary to argue that it's superior to other silhouettes esp. considering that there is not justification being made here.

    • @VinceNet
      @VinceNet Před 2 měsíci

      Saying that it is arbitrary or subjective is a moot point because all fashion is arbitrary. If you want an explanation of why some people think it looks better, then you're entering philosophy.
      The items fitting well is assumed by this point, so it's all about adding visual interest. If you disagree that it adds anything then that's valid. I personally think that the 1/2 outfit shown here is obviously more boring, but I wouldn't be able to explain logically why that is.
