Link's Awakening is absolutely amazing! Still holds up to this day, and it deserves that number 1 spot. Also, was really looking forward to that Gameboy Color video mentioned at the beginning. Hope you guys get to that, even if it has been a while.
Six. Golden. Coins. The portable title I've played the most. Probably the game I've ever beaten the most times. My love for this game is endless. I so badly want another title like this, I'd even do a colour remake on the Switch e-shop. It's glorious.
You know, I had an idea for a Game Boy Classic Edition, and I think this Gameboy Classic Edition should have these features: -Have the same saving features as the NES Classic Edition -Have a backlit screen while still having the games in black-&-white with green coloring that the console is known for -Have the model be shaped after the Gameboy Pocket with all different kinds of colors (or get a special original model Gameboy version which costs more, but is a great collectors item) -Have wireless connectivity to other Gameboys for multiplayer & digital TVs to play the games on it with added color like it's a Super Gameboy -Have a rechargeable battery that can charge through a USB cable and these would be the games: 1. Tetris 2. Dr. Mario 3. Super Mario Land 4. Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins 5. Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 6. Pokemon Red/Blue (you will get one of these randomly) 7. Mario's Picross 8. Operation C 9. Kid Icarus of Myths and Monsters 10. Final Fantasy Adventure 11. Megaman V 12. Wave Race 13. Alleyway 14. Balloon Kid 15. Donkey Kong 94' 16. Donkey Kong Land 17. Baseball 18. Golf 19. Tennis 20. Blades of Steel 21. International Superstar Soccer 22. F-1 Race 23. the Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening 24. Metroid II: the Return of Samus 25. Kid Dracula 26. Gargoyle's Quest 27. Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge 28. Final Fantasy Legend II 29. Kirby's Dream Land 30. Kirby's Dream Land 2 31. Pinball: Revenge of the Gator 32. Street Fighter II 33. Double Dragon II 34. Ninja Gaiden Shadow 35. Harvest Moon GB 36. Mole Mania 37. Gradius: Interstellar Assault 38. Pacman 39. Kirby's Pinball Land 40. Kirby's Block Ball do you think that would be good?
The two wireless features probably wouldn't happen but they'd be great. Aside from that your list is solid and would probably sell really well. Having a screen would make it fairly pricey though.
Link's Awakening was my first Game Boy game, I loved it so much! It also led me to buy Final Fantasy Legend 2, because the screenshots on the box made it look similar... I quickly learnt it wasn't very similar at all, but that led me to discover a love of JRPGs 😄 I would definitely have put Final Fantasy Legend 2 in this list, had I made it. I'm furious you didn't, so I'm now going to unsubscribe, and maybe send you a vaguely threatening email like "I'm going to break into your house while you're asleep, rub mayonnaise on all your kitchen cupboard handles, and then leave the fridge door open so you waste electricity".
I was ranting about how links awakening was probably one of the best games ever made especially for its time to my wife as she casually ignored me. You placing it at #1 gave me a renewed respect for your channel. Thank you!
Can't really argue with anything on this list, I guess. I fully agree that Link's Awakening is by far the best game on the console, and possibly the greatest Zelda game of all. I can't quite express what I love about it so much- the almost fairy-tale whimsy, the vast cast of quirky characters (especially the unforgettable Marin), the obviously-intentional dreamlike bizarreness, the brilliantly-designed dungeons and creative bosses, one of the greatest 8-bit soundtracks of all time, the brutal plot twist that turns the story on its head on the way to the gut-punch ending... it's a practically perfect game. But I'm surprised you didn't make room for one more game on this list to include one of the Final Fantasy Legend/Saga games.
Agree with you, Link's Awakening is one of the best, not just for gameboy but of all nintendo's consoles games. In the DX version there is a secret color dungeon as well. Great game overall
It's been over a year now, and no new list. Someone might want to ask. And by someone, I mean me. Because I am the one asking and I shouldn't tell someone to do it because i want them to....
So I'm not sure about a lot of these but I do believe Donkey Kong was indeed a GBC game, so I'm not sure if they sorta mixed em in here or if that one is just the odd man (monkey?) out lol but yeah I'd love another one of these, even if it was just a top 10.
Ahhh! Somebody else who appreciates Babs' Big Break :D This was one of the first video games I ever played, and probably the first one I ever beat. So many memories!
FFL2 also has one of the best soundtracks of the era, with an incredibly inventive use of stereo panning to make only 3 sound channels sound nearly orchestral.
beaten it several times over the decades since first buying it in the 90s and decided that this year i was going to max out at least one of the human or mutant stats to all 99s. currently first time one character has 99 strength.
Donkey Kong Land III was the best Donkey Kong Land game. The first DKL had unique level themes , but it was glitchy and hard to play due to the dark character sprites on the dark backgrounds. DKL2 felt like a watered down version of DKC2, but DKL3-despite borrowing the same level themes from its SNES counterpart-had the best level design by far.
Love your '20-something Best...' videos. Awesome job as always. Also, would have been cool if you'd shown how good some of these games look with color palettes
Wario Land probably the first game where I got 100% treasures without walkthrough.. good times! and now there's a mod to make it more colorful like a GBC game
Great list! I spent so much time on Metroid 2 and Donky Kong, I also had Bart Vs The Juggernauts which was a love hate relationship. When you hook up gameboy to a proper sound system, you really see how good the music is 👌. Gameboy was a massive upgrade from the static lcd games.
Love the Game Boy. Because nobody asked, here's my Top 10 (order changes daily!). 10 - Samurai Spirits III 9 - Mega Man V 8 - Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge 7 - Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins 6 - Kid Dracula 5 - Kirby's Dream Land 2 4 - Donkey Kong '94 3 - Mole Mania 2 - Pokemon Blue/Red 1 - Tetris
My top 5 would probably be... 5 - Legend of Zelda Links Awakening 4 - Mega man IV 3 - Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge 2 - Super Mario Land 2 1 - Mega Man V I can only pick 5 because most of the Game boy games I've played are GBC games
Loving the Castlevania II love. Feel like it's overlooked all the time, but the music alone is enough for it to be high on the list. Never plated Mega Man IV on GB; will have to download it for 3DS (because I'm a Mega Man scrub who needs save states!).
Tecmo Bowl, Skate or Die Tour de Thrash, World Cup, Blades of Steel, Qix, Klax, Mario Picross, Tennis, Alfred Chicken, tons of great games...even loved Missle Command on it and all the atari ports...And this version of Tetris is still the best but so hard not being able to "hold" a piece
And of course, Link's Awakening is number one. Of course it is. It's Links freaking Awakening. It's one of the best Zelda Games to date despite being on the FREAKING GAMEBOY.
A link to the past is #1, then both n64 ones in no particular order. Everything else can pack sand ... Links Awakening and the Oracle ones might as well have been re-skin ports of a link to the past for an inferior system than the snes.
Final Fantasy Legend was a big one for me. Amazing music, story, very hard and buggy, loved the box art. Definitely played Pokemon till my eyes turned to goo, but FF Legend was still a big one.
The first Secret of Mana game, needs on this list... It was known as Seiken Densetsu: Final Fantasy Gaiden in Japan, Final Fantasy Adventure in North America, and Mystic Quest in Europe. That was a game I played on way too many car trips.
Perfect Cell. Technically not ‘free’ of course but seeing as most of us will pay the online subscription to play online these should be ‘free’ from a figurative sense. 👍🏻
I'd be fine with them being paid, I just want them on the Switch! If they were 5 bucks a piece I'd buy almost every game on this list. Except the racing game.
Trip world was so advance for it's time. The "enemy" A.I was like nothing else. The music was top notch too. Sunsoft were delicious bastards back in the day.
Good video. I would have added one of the fighters that actually turned out really good: Killer Instinct or Samurai Showdown. I still boot up my game boy and play those to this day 😀
My list 😊 20. Balloon Kid 19. Solar Striker 18. R Type II 17. Donkey Kong Land 16. Wario Blast 15. Wave Race 14. Tiny Toon's Bab's Big Break. 13. World Heroes 2 Jet 12. Kid Dracula 11. Kirby's Dreamland 2 10. Wario Land 09. Gargoyle's Quest 08. Tetris 07. Mega Man V 06. Metroid II 05. Castlevania II 04. Donkey Kong 03. Super Mario Land 2 02. Pokemon Red & Blue 01. Zelda: Link's Awakening
There is one Game on the Game Boy i would easily put in the Top 5 of my List and that is Burai Fighter Deluxe. One of the most atmospheric games on the system for sure and a great experience even today - part of it is the great great Soundtrack.
After realizing the majority of my time on my Retroid Pocket 2 really was GameBoy games, I got a GameBoy Pocket off eBay and this is one of the games I own physically. I really have to start using the password system, as I've really just been going until I die.
davidevoid I mean Dreamland 1 is pretty good too but Dreamland 2 is way better and has much more content. Also it introduced my favourite Kirby villain, Dark Matter
Great list. I appreciate the choice of Donkey Kong Land 2 (over the other entries in that series) and the inclusion of Mole Mania, which should have had a sequel on the (3)DS, because that would have been the perfect system for it. Great, unique and pretty tough puzzle-game. I'm somewhat surprised about the absence of Mystic Quest/Final Fantasy Adventure/Seiken Densetsu and one of the Final Fantasy Legend-/SaGa-Games (probably the second one) and the choice of Wario Land over the innovative, huge and original masterpiece that is Wario Land II. I personally would add The King of Fighters - Heat of Battle, an impressive port of KoF '96. And, yeah, well... Link's Awakening may be the best Zelda-game of all time.
Good list, with some great classics. My GB/GBC collection : Super Mario Land 1 Wario Land Ms. Pacman Space Invaders Garfield Soccer Pokemon Red + Gold Superman Super Hunchback starring Quasimodo Mystical Ninja starring Goemon Top Gear Rally I also played some of the games you listed in their SNES version (the 3 chapters of Donkey Kong, a different version of Contra called Super Probotectors Alien Rebels , Super Metroid, Duck Tales). Hours of entertaining...and now when nostalgia calls, sometimes I use emulators. 🙂
davidevoid Me too, my friend. Me too. Currently going through Picross S at the moment, instead of all of the other Switch delights. I don’t feel guilty, and it all started with this GB game :)
Trip World deserves a spot here so badly! It's an extremely delightful GameBoy game filled with very charming creatures in every single screen! Cannot recommend enough!
I was really hoping to see Final Fantasy Adventures on here. I feel it's criminally overlooked. I would highly recommend for anyone that loves Zelda: Link's Awakening; Same feel for gameplay with more RPG elements like leveling up. I found it in 2019 and fell in love with it.
Weird.. most folks never mention James Bond 007 as one if the top games.. yet nintendo power always had it near the top as most popular games on system
Some Bad Batter A.) Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters was a sequel B.) Dr. Mario may have come out on NES and Game Boy, but it wasn't a port. Ports are when you take an existing game, change a few lines of code, and the same game appears on mutliple consoles, like PS4 to Xbox One. Both versions of Dr. Mario are entirely separate entities, they may share the same game play, but both had to be developed individually, making it not a port.
"Miyamoto itself"! Haha he wouldn't appreciate that! He probably won't notice. At any rate, solid list! I would add a couple japanese exclusives among them. -ZAS is the best shooting game on the game boy -Demon darkness is probably even better than gargoyle's quest. Playable in japanese without too much pain. -Cabe Noire is a miniature rogue like on game boy. Lots of fun, almost no japanese text. -Banishing Racer, just because it's a car platformer Also, Megaman IV is on par with V. Both are such great concentrates of what makes Megaman so cool.
I’d really like to see more odd platformers like Wario nowadays, more characters with strange move sets totally different than Mario. We need a new Princess Peach side-scroller
I loved Terminator 2 on Game Boy, but yeah, it's prob not in the top 26. Faceball 2000 definitely needs to be there (I'd replace F1 with it since it was 4-player too). SML > SML2 but both go in the top 5 without that series rule ;)
Yes! Link's Awakening! My first (and therefore favourite) Zelda game! Also happy to see the Tiny Toon Adventures game on there. I played both non stop when I was a kid!
Pretty solid list. Donkey Kong really deserves a spot in the Top 5 though-maybe even THE top spot. You also left out DR. MARIO, a particularly glaring omission. I'd definitely include that one in the Top 5 as well.
I think we all can agree that there's maybe 3 games you can still tolerate from Gameboy Original. Mario 2 and Zelda are without doubt the king and queen of that console. Pokémon games were its princesses. I went on alot of roadtrips as a kid and had tons of gameboy carts. Mario 2 and Pokemon were the most played.
Have you taken a look at the android app game 'Stranger Things'? They created it just a few years back in honor of the tv show. When I saw Pokemon Red & Blue on your video, it immediately reminded me of Stranger Things. This means the creators made it look retro and it's excellent! There is even an online article which is a complete guide on how to get from one level to the next. I never got the opportunity to play Game Boy but I'm looking into it now. These videos help, they show what is out there. The 1,049 games video is painstakingly long. But I'm chipping away at it little at a time building a list of what might be good.
I still have some original game boy games from when I had the system back in the early 90s. I no longer have my original game boy. Yet I still have my Super Game Boy for my Super Nintendo. And a couple of years ago I bought myself a red GBA sp. And that wonderful little system can play any game boy related game. And just this month alone I bought 3 more original game boy games used from Ebay. The first 2 Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle games. I remember having the first one a real long time ago. Until I accidentally lost it out back of my now late grandparents farm house. And I never could find that game. And they had a huge massive backyard. Which explains why that game was never found. And I bought Kwirk which is one game boy game I have always wanted to have. Since I remember back in 4th grade this is going back to 1990. One of my classmates allowed me to play their Kwirk game on their game boy. And since then I always wanted the game myself. But never gotten around to getting it until now. Seeing this video reminds me that I need to get more original game boy games. Which I eventually will. Maybe next month I will get more. I still need to get Kirby, Zelda, and the 2 Super Mario Land games. Along with some other game boy games.
I am glad that you still have your Game Boy Color. As for me I never had one. But now that I have a GBA sp I am planning on collecting a good amount of GB, GBC, and GBA games for that system. Just the games that I am really interested in getting.
Totally agreed with Pokemon being in the top 5 if not #1. I would've put it at #1 but oh well. I grew up playing Blue as a youngster and was so addicted to it.
Funny story. When me and my bro were kids, we’d write Christmas lists. As a TMNT junkie, I asked for fall of the foot clan. My bro asked for Batman. My parents made a mistake and put my name on Batman, his name on TMNT. when we opened the gifts, I was so mad. My parents obviously couldn’t admit the mistake so they asked us to sort it out. The only way my bro would give me my tmnt was if I traded him Batman, and a gi joe (captain gridiron). I made the trade, my bro’s an asshole lol.
I can't argue with the top two. Personally I would have put Wario Land in the top five and above Super Mario Land 2 because I like it more. Also well done for including Super Mario Land music in the background even though you couldn't put it on the actual list due to the one game per series rule.
Man my fav when they came out was Duck Tales and Megaman in Dr. Wiley's Revenge. Man was that game hard! Plus I never got too far at Gargoyle's Quest. Was too hard.

I fell in love with the Zelda series after beating Link's Awakening. I still get the chills from the melody when you first pick up your sword!!
It was my first Zelda, at age 12, and immediately became a fan of the series, to this day!
The top Game Boy title for me is Wario Land. I completed it 100% probably 20 times. But Megaman IV and Tetris are also brilliant.
Yes. I so agree.
Still can't believe how good the soundtrack is on Metroid II. I used to load up the title screen just to hear it play.
Dragon Warrior 1 and 2 was my favorite! Loved that it moved a bit smoother and the rearrangement to the soundtrack was amazing
Everybody gangsta till he put pokemon red and blue at #2
Link's Awakening is absolutely amazing! Still holds up to this day, and it deserves that number 1 spot.
Also, was really looking forward to that Gameboy Color video mentioned at the beginning. Hope you guys get to that, even if it has been a while.
I'm so glad you included the first Tiny Toons GB Game on this list.
I totally loved that Game in my Childhood.
The music is catchy af

Oof, maybe, I could never get into it although it looks great. Ever played Noobow? Kinda similiar.
Yes! Lucky enough to have a Japanese cart of that one and I love it. Especially the catchy music! :)
Trip world was so advance for it's time. The "enemy" A.I was like nothing else.
The music was top notch too.
Sunsoft were delicious bastards back in the day.
Oh dang you actually had Gradius The Interstellar Assault! Darn good game, but really obscure. Probably my favorite Gradius Game, TBH.
Lanky macCrazyhair hey Lanky have you ever played Gradius V on ps2 or psn!?
Quinn Reiswig I have not. I really want to but I don't have with re of those systems
Good video. I would have added one of the fighters that actually turned out really good: Killer Instinct or Samurai Showdown. I still boot up my game boy and play those to this day 😀
My list 😊
20. Balloon Kid
19. Solar Striker
18. R Type II
17. Donkey Kong Land
16. Wario Blast
15. Wave Race
14. Tiny Toon's Bab's Big Break.
13. World Heroes 2 Jet
12. Kid Dracula
11. Kirby's Dreamland 2
10. Wario Land
09. Gargoyle's Quest
08. Tetris
07. Mega Man V
06. Metroid II
05. Castlevania II
04. Donkey Kong
03. Super Mario Land 2
02. Pokemon Red & Blue
C'mon now, Dreamland 2 is waaaaaaaaay better than the first game.
davidevoid that's exactly what I thought
Right!? It's up there with the best of Kirby for sure.
davidevoid I mean Dreamland 1 is pretty good too but Dreamland 2 is way better and has much more content. Also it introduced my favourite Kirby villain, Dark Matter
Yeah, I was confused for sure. 2 was amazing.
Agreeeeed!
My GB/GBC collection :
Super Mario Land 1
Wario Land
Ms. Pacman
Space Invaders
Garfield
Soccer
Pokemon Red + Gold
Superman
Super Hunchback starring Quasimodo
Mystical Ninja starring Goemon
Top Gear Rally
I also played some of the games you listed in their SNES version (the 3 chapters of Donkey Kong, a different version of Contra called Super Probotectors Alien Rebels , Super Metroid, Duck Tales).
Hours of entertaining...and now when nostalgia calls, sometimes I use emulators. 🙂
Mario’s Picross is in this list. I approve.
Yeeeeah! So freakin addictive; I dream about Picross DS and 3D from playing so much of the series.
davidevoid Me too, my friend.
That is some super cool Pikachu art you got back there
Link's Awakening is definitely number one to me. I loved it ever since getting a copy at a flea market and still do to this day.
@@mattr0fact949 Well, it's a place where people can sell their old things for a bit of money.
Alex, we are still waiting in a gameboy colour one!!!
Weird.. most folks never mention James Bond 007 as one if the top games.. yet nintendo power always had it near the top as most popular games on system
I feel it’s a huge disservice to the console that the Invader Bob saga wasn’t more represented on your list. What a hidden gem!
No Dr. Mario OR Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters? What madness is this?
King Koleyolis III tbf, those where ports
Some Bad Batter A.) Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters was a sequel B.) Dr. Mario may have come out on NES and Game Boy, but it wasn't a port. Ports are when you take an existing game, change a few lines of code, and the same game appears on mutliple consoles, like PS4 to Xbox One. Both versions of Dr. Mario are entirely separate entities, they may share the same game play, but both had to be developed individually, making it not a port.
Dr Mario? Really. That's the most mediocre game on the planet
Madness?
This.
Is.
NINTENDO!
(Had to be done)
@@somebadbatter Of Myths and Monsters is a sequel not a port.
This video was a trip down memory lane for me. The Game Boy was my first game device ever!!
Yo forgot the Secret Of Mana games. The Final Fantasy Adventures or what ever they called them. Deserved to be on the list way more than... picross...
Pretty good list, really weird placements for some games like M2 and WL1
It’s funny that he makes the calculator joke bc I play these on my ti84
Kirby’s dream land 2 is far superior to the first. Many hours of joy
"Miyamoto itself"! Haha he wouldn't appreciate that! He probably won't notice.
At any rate, solid list!
I would add a couple japanese exclusives among them.
-ZAS is the best shooting game on the game boy
-Demon darkness is probably even better than gargoyle's quest. Playable in japanese without too much pain.
-Cabe Noire is a miniature rogue like on game boy. Lots of fun, almost no japanese text.
-Banishing Racer, just because it's a car platformer
Also, Megaman IV is on par with V. Both are such great concentrates of what makes Megaman so cool.
Donkey Kong 94 is my fav gb title. It’s just so good.
I’d really like to see more odd platformers like Wario nowadays, more characters with strange move sets totally different than Mario. We need a new Princess Peach side-scroller
I need to track some of these games down on the 3DS eShop.
I loved Terminator 2 on Game Boy, but yeah, it's prob not in the top 26. Faceball 2000 definitely needs to be there (I'd replace F1 with it since it was 4-player too). SML > SML2 but both go in the top 5 without that series rule ;)
Wave Race was a good port on the Game Boy
The gameboy version of Bionic Commando not being on this list is a crime.
Marioland games are unique because they were made by r&d 1. Miyamoto's division is r&d 4.
Mortal Kombat 2, Centipede & Millipede are a coupe beloved games that would crack into my personal top 10.
In my opinion there are way too many games to narrow down to just 26 games. But I think the games you included are good nonetheless.
Links Awakening is the reason my GCSEs suffered badly!
Yes! Link's Awakening! My first (and therefore favourite) Zelda game! Also happy to see the Tiny Toon Adventures game on there. I played both non stop when I was a kid!
Ninja Gaiden, pokemon, Zelda, Mario Land 2
I agree on the top 5 list. They are amazing. Also i find that i can still play them today over and over again.
When i was 4 years old i had a GB and the only game i had for it was Tetris and it was very depressing when everyone had mario and pokemon games
I always click on Nintendo Life
First to hear
“Hello there lovely people” 😎
And the quality Nintendo information
Pretty solid list. Donkey Kong really deserves a spot in the Top 5 though-maybe even THE top spot. You also left out DR. MARIO, a particularly glaring omission. I'd definitely include that one in the Top 5 as well.
I think we all can agree that there's maybe 3 games you can still tolerate from Gameboy Original. Mario 2 and Zelda are without doubt the king and queen of that console. Pokémon games were its princesses. I went on alot of roadtrips as a kid and had tons of gameboy carts. Mario 2 and Pokemon were the most played.
Now playing F-1 Race. It’s one of the hardest games i ever played...But can’t stop 🤷🏻♂️
I was going to write Gargoyles Quest in the comments, but then it was on the list.
Thank you,
Firebrand
Did you guys ever do a Gameboy Color video?
Have you taken a look at the android app game 'Stranger Things'? They created it just a few years back in honor of the tv show. When I saw Pokemon Red & Blue on your video, it immediately reminded me of Stranger Things. This means the creators made it look retro and it's excellent! There is even an online article which is a complete guide on how to get from one level to the next.
I never got the opportunity to play Game Boy but I'm looking into it now. These videos help, they show what is out there. The 1,049 games video is painstakingly long. But I'm chipping away at it little at a time building a list of what might be good.
My favorite game that not a lot of people knew about was the crash test dummies game🎮💙🔥
I would say Pokemon Yellow and Zelda Links awakening are top of the top!
I still have my Game Boy Color, but lost most of my games (some are R.I.P.). I need to restock my GB and GBA libraries.
I am glad that you still have your Game Boy Color. As for me I never had one. But now that I have a GBA sp I am planning on collecting a good amount of GB, GBC, and GBA games for that system. Just the games that I am really interested in getting.
Pokémon Red & Blue are the most beloved games for the Gameboy
Totally agreed with Pokemon being in the top 5 if not #1. I would've put it at #1 but oh well. I grew up playing Blue as a youngster and was so addicted to it.
Actually surprised Kirby’s Dreamland isn’t here. It always felt like THE game on that system for me.
4 years later: Ahhhhh I found this video What Good Memories.
My personal favorite GameBoy game is Dr. Mario. I know there are other versions of this game but Dr. Mario is such a fun game to play on the go.
Man my fav when they came out was Duck Tales and Megaman in Dr. Wiley's Revenge. Man was that game hard! Plus I never got too far at Gargoyle's Quest. Was too hard.
I'm surprised and happy to see Tiny Toons there. Also love Balloon kid
