Sagar is absolutely right on this one. As a US citizen working in the tech industry, I have first hand experience on seeing how H1B visa applicants are negatively affecting the skilled labor market for average Americans. These jobs are usually upper middle class jobs which used to be the backbone of the US economy but now wages are being kept suppressed artificially by allowing overseas workers to flood the job market and accepting much lower wages than a US citizen with similar qualifications just so that they can continue to stay in this country. I respect the need to retain foreign talent to the United States, but only with super highly skilled jobs that a company has done it's absolutely due diligence to make sure another American couldn't fill first. But policies like this ultimately hurt middle class Americans and help the wealth gap divide further as Trump, his wealthy friends who own companies and and other CEOs get richer and normal Americans face harder times and higher inflation.

As an Indian immigrant who went through the H1b system myself , I think this is not a good idea. This will open the floodgates and drastically increase the stem workforce overnight and suppress the wages( not to mention US Citizens grad s including stem are already fining hard to land their first job.) STEM is probably one of the only few areas where people can make good money and have a middle class life. These tech elites don’t like this and that’s they trying to import immigrants to suppress wages and make themselves richer. Also when US CITIZENS realize that their wages are being suppressed due to this they are going to be more hostile towards legal immigrants. As Saagar mentioned The colleges are going to green cards mills.
Don’t believe me look at Canada. In spite of having merit based system when they issued a lot of PR ( green card ), wages got supressed, housing got more unaffordable and now everyone including the immigrants are struggling. I know a lot stem immigrants with a lot experience who came to Canada cannot get a job and now forced to food delivery jobs. It’s horrible there.

If an American engineer could go work for a one year, 3 year , or 5 year contract in a European country, and earn 10x his salary back home in America (so think $150k in the usa vs $1.5 million in europe), you don't think he would be willing to sacrifice for that contract period and work super long hours, because when done and back home he would be wealthy? Most normal americans don't want to become an engineer to work 12+ hour days 7 days a week for the next 40 years at an average salary for their trade. It’s a bad policy. Especially that there are no qualifiers on what type of skills or degree the people earn. It creates a secondary benefit for foreign students that undercuts American students and workers by extension.
It means someone can spend $60k to get a liberal arts associates degree, in gender studies, from a community college and it’s essentially buying their way into the U.S. and take a job that would otherwise go to a native citizen.
If Trump wants to satisfy the need for highly technical skilled employees, he should set the bar to admit work visas only for those people with those skills, and in the interim, fix the problem that’s making those career paths out of reach for US citizens.

I've also lived overseas. I agree. If our immigration policies were based on reciprocity, no one would be getting into America. If people entering the US truly believed in open borders, they would've opened up their own countries. The reality is that immigration is entirely self-serving for the individuals and businesses involved. Freedom of movement and the opportunities it opens up is a privilege people keep for themselves and refuse others.

If Saagar is so concerned about “Americans” losing opportunities to foreigners, shouldn’t he publicly call for his parents, and anyone else who came here through these visas, to be deported? Btw, this proposal would be so much better for Americans that the H1B visas since this potential visa would be uncoupled from employers so these foreign-born workers wouldn’t not need to accept low-ball offers to stay in the country. Which means they are effectively indentured servants working off an impossible debt. Because if they do quit or demand more money, they are suddenly hit with 10s of thousands of dollars of debt.
