    Well, on the Fantasy front I'd recommend: Prince of Thorns (it's pretty dark), Name of the Wind (my personal best ever and is becoming really popular ) and Magician is good if you have a soft spot for places like Middle Earth. Enders Game is pretty good, nice easy page-turner. Also Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn trilogy is pretty awesome, it has a completely unique fantasy world and magic system.

    ... he started at 15 so lets not say he won't.. just that with the inheritance cycle alone he won't.
    And he did manage to have a perfect balance of description and verbs in my opinion.. things kept moving and you didn't have to leave that unconscious state of imagination that you sometimes enter while reading.
    I agree he still has to master his craft.

  • @kro235
    @kro235 Před 11 lety

    Yeah, you're right, it's subjective. People enjoy different books. Paolini has potential though, I just think his works were published while he was too young, I don't think the inheritance cycle got the writing it deserved. If he didn't have such strong ties with publishers I don't doubt Eragon would have been delayed a lot longer. Most writers don't get published until their writing style has matured because they're usually cold-submitting transcripts against harsh requirements.

  • @kro235
    @kro235 Před 11 lety

    Writing isn't about a balance of description and verbs. Writing can have natural flow. It can be a thing of beauty. How much fantasy do you read?

  • @verifymyageful
    @verifymyageful Před 11 lety

    Ya, you are missing the point of my comment. It was a response to someone who was calling the writing itself bad.. The point of my comment was to address the core of fantasy books.. immersion. If a book fantasy novel be read fluently without you having to spend your time trying to understand what is happening then that adds a great deal of immersion to the story.. if you can read it fluently then you will absorb all of the details (full attention) The book should put you in a dream like state.

  • @verifymyageful
    @verifymyageful Před 11 lety

    A good amount.. and I didn't say that was what it was about.. in your previous comment you said that a great writer can make a great story about seemingly mundane things my response was basically to say that I agree Paolini's epic scale makes up for his writing propensity to a degree but I also think there was no need for him to be more descriptive. When it comes to how writing flows I think that is a subjective matter to a degree.

  • @kro235
    @kro235 Před 11 lety

    Yeah. Although the very best of sci fi is usually pretty solid. I'm not talking about Star Wars or Star Trek. At least they are solid if you add in a major assumption about how the universe works haha. Stick yo what you like though. Have you given Dune a go? Or Enders Game? Both are pretty standard intros to sci fi.

  • @verifymyageful
    @verifymyageful Před 11 lety

    I loved the inheritance cycle.. I didn't mind the writing because the writing could completely immerse you in the world of Alagaesia.. I don't think you should be paying that much attention when reading fantasy.. its more about the story.

    My recommendation for coming of age, dystopian fantasy is "Vivian Amberville - The Weaver of Odds" by Louise Blackwick.
    It's a new and little known author, but the book has a fanbase of 2-3 million readers.Vivian Amberville is basically a masterpiece of the fantasy genre, in right league with George Martin, J.K.Rowling and Patrick Rothfuss.
    Vivian Amberville follows the story of a teenage girl who can manipulate the outcome of events. She can travel between dimensions and ultimately discovers she can reshape reality. The story mainly takes place in two worlds: one is a futuristic failed Great Britain, the other a fantasy realm where thoughts can be shaped into things.
    The masterpiece of this work is the multi-layered world the author created, the lifelike characters and the hidden messages in the story. A recommended read for fantasy and sci fi fans!

    For the sake of appealing to the fact that so many people enjoy his books despite his writing, I can admit that what he is, is a storyteller, maybe even a good one. But please don't try to make the argument that he's a good writer, and I ask that you pay me the respect of maybe not insulting me like that for having a different sense of literature than you

    Ya he did get lucky, I'm glad it came out early though.. I was 15 when it came out and I don't think I would've gotten into it very much if I were an adult at the time.

    I liked dune but never read enders game.. I also enjoy Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy.
    I haven't been reading very much fiction at all though lately cuz I haven't really found anything that makes me want to keep reading.. any recommendations because I miss being able to pop open a good book whenever I get bored haha.

    Pretty much what I believe, Tolkien was a professor of Ancient English writings, Kids shouldn't attempt to make stories of medieval background, it just doesn't work and seems fake.

  • @kro235
    @kro235 Před 11 lety

    Sorry, I had to laugh at "identically similar." I think what other people are arguing is that the motions of the world and the themes in the inheritance cycle do actually differ quite a lot from Tolkien's works. Many writers have included Dwarves and Elves in their work, like the Riftwar Saga by Feist for example. Yet they have completely different plots and characters. Otherwise you start getting into things like: "G.R.R. Martin is unoriginal, he used dragons just like Tolkien!"

  • @kro235
    @kro235 Před 11 lety +1

    While that's true, it's much nicer to read masterful wordsmithy. Great writers can write a great story about seemingly mundane things. If Paolini didn't manage to make his world attractive the books would have been complete failures. The very best books always combine great writing with great ideas, hence why Paolini won't rank among the best fantasy authors.

  • @kro235
    @kro235 Před 11 lety

    yeah, I was like 12 I think. I must admit it did seem good to me back then. But when you read it now, you can really tell it was written by a 15 year old, a talented one, but a 15 year old all the same. I want to read what he writes when he's in his late 30s.

  • @verifymyageful
    @verifymyageful Před 11 lety

    apparently he wants to do something in the future.. so maybe it might be sci-fi.. I hope not because I'm not really a big sci fi fan for some reason.. a lot of the times with sci fi you notice actually scientific errors when they are trying to make things seem realistic and it is just bothersome. Not only that but I enjoy more 'middle earth' type stuff if you know what I mean.

    Every 'standard fantasy setting' is guilty of ripping off Tolkien.
    Inheritance Cycle only has couple similarities in names:
    Eragon and Aragorn, BUT, Eragon became from D-ragon -> E-ragon.
    Arwen and Arya, YET, 'Arya' means 'noble' in Old Persian, what describes her character well, and that's how she got her name.
    Basic fantasy world is SUPPOSED to have elves, dwarves and some mystic, dark antagonist creatures.
    Ex. if C.P would have used Hobbits in his story, now that would be plagiarizing.

    Mossflower by Brian Jacques is a great book in a great series but he mustn't like it as much as he's letting on because the hero in Mossflower is Martin the Warrior. Mattimeo is the son of Matthias who was the protagonist of the original novel Redwall, which chronologically comes generations after Mossflower lol

  • @caciquepadilla
    @caciquepadilla Před 12 lety

    how did he copy lord of the rings. it looks nothing like it. there is no mention of a ring. nor of a ghandalf like character. not to mention the method of communication is different. if tolkein's estate has not filed a lawsuit against him for some form of copyright infringement or made a statement to the effect its pretty much null and void to say such a thing.

  • @fazlam
    @fazlam Před 12 lety

    He said Hobbit was his favourtite book by Tolkien. Bullshit! he's just trying to hide the fact that he copied LOTR.

  • @verifymyageful
    @verifymyageful Před 11 lety

    Well some people like this generic set of fantasy characters and end up adding a couple of their own to the mix.. and by the way any form of mythology will be found in a book.. I don't see why it matters if you take ideas from the original source or from post manipulators of the ideas.

  • @fazlam
    @fazlam Před 12 lety

    He copied the lord of the rings, that is a well known fact, they're are a hundred websites listing the similarities. Regarding why the a copyright infringement was not made, well the Tolkien estate doesn't Have to, I wouldn't to a teenager, or perhaps a secet agreement was made that when he makes a few buck then they will do it privately not to embarres him, that was the right thing to do since he was a middle class kid.

  • @kro235
    @kro235 Před 11 lety

    Your logic is plain flawed. Tolkien was the first to introduce mainstream fantasy to Elves and Dwarves. They are fine to copy, yet Hobbits aren't? It's not plagiarism if you include the same race, only if you copy wording or direct ideas. If Eragon was a hobbit sent to cast an amulet in the centre of Mt. Horror then one could claim plagiarism. Otherwise every author of fantasy could never include Elves or Dwarves without being accused of plagiarism.

  • @unrealityproduction
    @unrealityproduction Před 12 lety

    No kidding! Tolkien was a genius! I mean, I can admit that I didn't LOVE the LOTR books, but I respect their genius and complexity and their art. The Inheritance Cycle and this subtle narcissist who wrote them, I think, will be forgotten like most teenage fads. I mean, his writing, if you pay attention to it, is really, really bad, but is disguised as good by how he goes out of his way to use as big of words as possible
