Tuna - Ngāi Tahu Mahinga Kai

The annual tuna migration from Lake Wairewa is a site to behold as the mature female tuna make their way across the shingle to the sea on their journey to Tonga. Local Ngāi Tahu take this opportunity to dig drains, sustainably harvest and process those not quick enough to escape. The locals, including our talent Iaean Cranwell are well known for their succulent, delicious smoked tuna.

i remember seeing this in river monsters: they made a canal and only kept the small eels and released the large ones to allow them to continue their life cycle. but omg that was cool how the eel was able to move smoothly on land in 5.04

We maori only take the teen ages release the grandparent the parents and the babes cause the grandparent and the parents show the babes the roots to take so there are eel left for the next generation and we only take wat we need

Great vid mate was in Little River maybe 10 yrs ago for Munchers fiftyish ( Chris Morrison ) it was held at the local hall was his band playing all night ,I have never eaten that much smoked eel in my hole life. It looks like you have found your mountain .Hi from Ian in OZ

Ataahua e hoa. Reminds me of my childhood at Whakaki, Wairoa District, Northern Hawkes Bay. I was bought up on the same tuna you are eating. The best. Good you and your whanau / community are keeping the lake clean so that that algae crap doesn't bugger up the fish / tuna especially. Nice stoney bottom lake which makes nice clean tasting tuna too. If ever i come down your way I'll drop in for a feed of tuna. We are whanau. You ancestor Tahu and my ancestor Ruawharo were on the Takitimu Waka together when it came to Aotearoa. Ma te wa e hoa.
