How Annihilape BROKE Gen 9 Competitive.

- Pokemon Competitive Singles format Gen 9 OU was once dominated by a very Angry Ape. Annihilape, the new evolution of Primeape, with the power of its all new move Rage Fist and the abuse of Terastallization, was an unstoppable force that eventually had to be Banned from the tier. Now in Ubers it remains a Force of Pure Evil that can defeat even the greatest Legendary's.
Iron Mugulis, or perhaps even Iron Fellow, may have orchestrated all of this from behind the scenes, from within Minecraft. Or did they?

Some will never figure out how to get Annihilape in Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet. But famous player Jim Cool is well aware of the Best Annihilape Moveset in Competitive, and even how to Annihilape Shiny Farm. Many aren't and never will be. That's just the unfortunate reality of the world.
This video and most of my videos are about Smogon Singles formats. Thanks.
Game Freak just blew all other online game development schools out of the water with this incredible new 2022 release. You're gonna need to get a game design degree online, and FAST, if you want to make a better game than this. Not even the best strategy games android reddit could hold a candle to this breathtaking Next generation competitive Pokemon experience.
Scream Tail is the Jigglypuff of our wildest dreams. It has been buffed with some higher statistics and the incredible ability, Protosynthesis. Gen 9 Competitive Pokemon wouldn't be the same without this powerful pink blob. He kinda looks like someone I met in one of my game design and development courses.
Gen 9 Pokemon Showdown is one of the greatest online gaming sites in history. From Pikachu and Charizard, to Palafin and Roaring Moon, The new Pokemon games, Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, have introduced a lot of new faces. Can I succeed in one of the best android games of all time? If so, I'm gonna get myself a Walmart bakery Pokemon cake to celebrate.
Gholdengo is a Pokemon made of pure gold. He must have done some online business management courses to accumulate all that wealth. Or perhaps he might want to learn how to make money playing video games on CZcams. In any case, he's a powerful metagame force, with absolutely no interest in online game development schools.

Dynamax is still healthier for the meta than z-moves and mega evolution. They just need to fix air stream, other than that, dynamax is manageable
To be honest I saw nothing wrong with the rankings if I were to make a tier list I would make it pretty similarly yours but put kommo-o a little bit higher

Fun Fact:
Every single Ghost-Fighting type has been banned very quickly from OU in their introductory generation
Isn't there like ..... 2 of them only ?
@@user-lq4ct6dr5m yes
still pretty noteworthy that both of them got banned in the first month (pretty sure marshadow got banned in gen 7 ou faster than flutter mane in gen 9 ou, making it the fastest ever quick ban in ou history) and that they are the only non-signature type combo to be like this (everybody else has prevos that are not in ubers)
@@socialistrepublicofvietnam1500wasn’t marshadow only like 3 hours?
The problem is that Ghost/Fighting is already great typing but they also add on great abilities, stats, and movepools that work just a little too well with that. They didn't give any meaningful flaws to either Marshadow or Annihilape.
@@mr.sandman7339 I mean Marshadow was doomed to ubers because it was a legendary, but Annihilape was just another ginuea pig for a broken mechanic.
Its also sad cuz Annihilape is one of my fav new Gen 9 evolutions (right behind Clodsire).

Wugtrio with Triple Dive:
It’s their skill issue to be banned to Ubers. Iron Mugulis was banned to AG but he broke out of prison that’s why he’s RU.
The fact that you can pivot into a hit which then PERMANENTLY boosts rage fist is kinda insane. Also the STAB drain punch.
One of my favorite things to do was to punish people by switching into/staying in on a predicted u-turn (which you 4x resist) and get the same boost as if you got hit neutrally or super-effectively. There should be a minimum amount of damage you have to take from a hit before getting a boost. It also shouldn't be permanent; idk what GF was smoking when they designed this stuff.
@@mr.sandman7339They were cooking. Angry ghost monkey pig is awesome
But wait: what if we trap Iron Mugulis in a game with a high enough level of power creep to defeat it?
We time travel it back to rby
we need to wait for gen 10 when iron mugulis will be RUBL
Nah too risky.
You don't want it going Turbo...
We need to send Iron Mugulis back to Gen 5, so the iconic pokemon Golurk can wall it with its Ground/Ghost typing, being fully immune to the Stab types of Mugulis

It’s a shame cause apart from rage fist I actually really like the design and how it doesn’t just have a massive attack stat. If this was a pokemon in past generations like 3, 4, and 5 I think it would’ve been a good offensive spin blocker. But no it has to have the gen 7-9 effect where everything new needs to be super broken.

@@MouldMadeMind oh I’m sorry I didn’t know we weren’t reading the paragraph. When they said “but no he had to release in Gens 7-9 where everything has to be broken” and then listed gens 3, 4 AND 5 as better gens for this Pokémon to release in, implying they were more balanced meta games. I don’t need meds I just know how to read lmao 😂
You also forgot how Defiant prevents Intimidate from dropping it's power, and even punishes other stat drop moves that try to put a hole in it's bulk
Part of Tera's problems are part of the type chart. Fire/water/grass/fairy/steel and to a lesser extent poison offer so much defensively.
Not all types are created equal, so Tera will become unhealthy to the point it gets banned.
Annihilape is definitely one of the best bulky Pokemon with a near-perfect stat distribution, fast enough to stop walls from Taunting/phasing, but also bulky enough to take a hit to activate Rage Fist, and hard hitting enough to truly snowball out of control real fast. Things would be different if Tera wasn’t a thing, but Rage Fist’s passive effect really elevated this absolutely tank.
Man, they gave Primeape major compensation for being the latest gen 1 Pokémon with a cross-evolution, AND it has a base total like Swampert's so it's gonna be a real salty time dealing with it properly.
IMHO, Annihilape was banned more because of Rage Fist than anything else. It probably would have been just fine in OU if it didn't have that monster of a move. Its stats are great, but not overwhelming, and its typing gives it great neutral coverage. And even with Terastallization, it's still not an unbeatable menace. I even suspect if Rage Fist was nerfed, Annihilape would still be good in OU. Perhaps instead of a boost of 50 per hit taken and remaining even if it's KO'd, an increase of 25 per hit and/or the power resetting upon switching out would nerf Annihilape just enough to let it back into OU while still retaining its amazing power.
Thats what i said, he just use tera as the culprite of the ban when this guy is just a ghost type dracovish
the issue with Tera is that it lets Annihilape take hits much easier so that powering up Rage Fist isn’t as detrimental. STAB Rage Fist combined with Drain Punch for nearly perfect neutral coverage as well as the ability to heal and Taunt to prevent it from getting statused just pushes it over the edge.
@@robertoalexandermendezmore408 tera helps because this guy's weakness is common and is outsped by many things that can shut it down especially with the release of H-zoroark.

Primeape when it dies: “UNLIMITED POWER”
Yeah, that's it basically, it dies and it is no longer bound to a physical form.
@@bg8561 Badass in concept, brutal in execution
Ironic...he could kill others to death, but not himself...
As a huge Primeape fan, Annihilape was everything I ever could have wanted, both aesthetically and competitively. It is my favorite Gen 9 Pokemon by a wide margin. It makes me really happy that after all these years, the weird little ball of anger got the power boost it had always dreamed of. Annihilape also kind of reminds me of the demon form of Rean Schwarzer from the Trails series of video games, which is just icing on the cake because he's one of my favorite video game characters. All in all a dream come true.
I really agree with your point on Tera, and I've said time and again that the forced 50/50s against setup sweepers with game-ending ramifications are extremely unhealthy and not something that you can just solve by banning all of the problem Pokemon, because as we've seen there will always be a new overbearing threat to rise up. and exploit the mechanic. Annihilape might have been the first to show off this aspect of Terastilization, but it certainly wasn't the last. I was apprehensive since literally the day the mechanic was revealed (my initial gut reaction after seeing the trailer was "fairy Reuniclus is going to be so stupid"), I thought it was unhealthy from day 1 after abusing Palafin, Flutter Mane, and Iron Defense Body Press Garganacl, I really got frustrated watching so many players I deeply respect do poorly in SPL due to how ridiculous the mechanic is in a tournament setting both in builder and in game, and with the current rise of Kingambit with no end in sight and calls for a ban, I have felt more and more vindicated. I don't think that the mechanic will be banned in a suspect test during the lifespan of Gen 9 as the current gen because of the fallout and negative attention that the Dynamax ban garnered from more casual audiences and because of the notion that just because it's not as dumb as Dynamax means that it's ok. I sincerely believe that Tera will be banned in Gen 10 or 11's lifespan as tiering falls into the hands of tour players and the SPL and Smogon Tour playerbase has had enough.
I don't think the Tera will repeat the useful life of the Megas of two generations, like the rest of the special mechanics it will be kept together with the Megas, Z and dynamax in the memory drawer until TPC wants to get money through nostalgia
Highly doubt they'll bring tera back for gen 10, considering the lore. Also I think banning tera shouldnt be the answer considering how it defines gen 9, besides the pokemon themselves are broken to begin with
@@naganut9718 When I say they will ban Tera after Gen 9 stops being current, I mean that after Gen 10 releases the Gen 9 tiering policy will change to oldgen tiering, and that’s when Tera will be banned from Gen 9. Also, I have a very hard time believing that Tera isn’t the issue when so many Pokémon have shown to be able to use it to completely reverse a gamestate, eliminate all prior positioning in one turn, and force blind prediction. Even if, say, Kingambit is broken without Tera, that doesn’t mean that Tera isn’t a contributing factor to the most toxic and unhealthy elements of its gameplay.
To be fair, personally, I feel Nintendo doesn't give singles much consideration with these new gimmicks. Most of them are perfectly able to be used and countered in the VGC format, and are far less overbearing.
So in singles, these mechanics end up usually being very lopsided because they weren't designed for regular use with singles in mind beyond the main story battles.
I was literally thinking Hisuian zoroark would be like the perfect counter for an annihlape shortly before its arrival
H-Zoroark can really pressure Annihilape and wall it pretty well too...particularly, if its Illusion is still up.
Amazing analysis as always! We really appreciate your consistent uploads
Real talk, cobblemon mod for minecraft is so fun, and i really hope not to run into terrifying threat Iron Mugulis while im exploring caves
The warden can beat it.
before i started playing gen 9 showdown more often, i was confused about annihilape's ban because i thought it wasn't exactly that op since it has weakness to many common offensive types and its speed would hold it back. after i played many games in nat dex ou (back when annihilape wasn't banned there), i realized how wrong i was and i saw the brokenness of annihilape and now totally understand and agree why that thing got banned.
It's banned in nat Dex as well?
Reject competitive balance, return to monke🐒
2:37 I am not used to seeing Avalugg without sturdy
(I know this was used to prove a point about the power of rage fist but it’s still funny how that Avalugg died in one hit)
Totally agree with the fact that tera is what makes annihilape too OP in OU...
Honestly banning tera would make a lot of things way less broken stuff like kingambit is insane due to tera basically creating an uno reverse card (kingambit has other stuff that make it good to but tera is the reason it can be unbeatable)
I've come to realize as a result of this vid that Tera (as well as Z-moves and Dynamax when those existed) made me feel like OU was playing more like one of the monthly OMs. Megas felt more natural imo since they were restricted to a small number of obvious mons (some were def over the top tho). But after that, everything got access to whatever regional gimmick GF came up with which just causes chaos.
Sometimes it's fun like with status Z-moves or using your Tera on an otherwise unimpressive mon so it has a role. But there are only so many times I can try to predict when Skeledirge will Tera-fairy and keep my sanity.
@@mr.sandman7339 Only problem with megas is that they were usually either broken beyond belief or extremely underwhelming. Some good mons got broken megas, some good mons got shitty megas (Garchomp), some bad mons got irrelevant megas, and then we got shit like mega ray.

If I had a nickel for every Ghost/Fighting Pokemon banned from OU in their debut generation I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird it happened twice
We need the Fearsome Flagon, Sinistea's Great Grandfather with a Ground/Fire typing and the move Half Empty to defeat Iron Mugulis. I heard he's some kind of war hero, and if we could ger him the Herba Mystica, there's no way he coild lose to Iron Mugulis.
Also I like Terastalization and Annihilape, but I'm more of a VGC player where these things are more balanced (because they were designed mainly for doubles I bet)
I mean VGC is the main competitive format.
Wait, wait, wait...Primeape went from being a quickly-forgotten early-route encounter, being given up after 2 episodes, never given an evolution or Mega and being snubbed by Pokken, to getting an evolution that got it banned from OU!?

my man said what we were all thinking about terastillization
This was really informative and detailed video. And I also have to agree on the Tera mechanic. I like it better than dynamax and z moves, but it can be a game changer because you couldn’t predict 1 out of the 18 possible types. Your suggestion is a good middle ground to be able to keep playing with it, while making it more balanced.
More like 1 in 4 because teras tend to be very predictable, but that's still a bit too dangerous.
Awesome video
It also came about in a format with two status immune mons and after the loss of toxic distribution
I can't help but imagine after Gen 9, Terastallization is lost and doesn't grant Pokémon like Annihilape an absurdly flexible presence that counters nearly every single approach specifically to shut it down. Even though it's inherently quite strong, Rage Fist is such an identity-defining move that's just overtuned as if GF was worried that anything less than the base power doubling permanently would be too weak. IMO Rage Fist could've worked with a 25 increase per hit instead and the ape would still thrive
I did some math and i realised the Volcarona past Paradox forms Slither Wing is able to kill the Sinistea/Iron Jugulis Future Paradox form Iron Mugulis so we don't have to revive Great Tusk
It’s so satisfying to sweep with Annihilape. Especially when Defiant kicks in when your opponent tries to lower your stats
My uncle who works for Nintendo said Iron Mugulis is coming to smash ultimate
Tera water rain sweepers are my personal favorites in gen 9 because of the sheer power they possess. The only real answer to them is water absorb or a quad resist both of which are hard to come by in the gen 9 ou meta.
Edit: Also now with walking wake you’ve got a really strong counter to sun teams.
Viper in the outro gave me whiplash
I’ve had my annihilape since he was level 10-15 Mankey from the first area we just swept all of team star and arven now we’re about to hit the league
I really love this Pokémon. Miss him. He does some really awesome shit.
I remember when this thing was in the tier. Annihilape was the reason I always ran tank Garchomp. I didn't care one bit about its bulk ups or rage fists. Annihilape would just slowly kill itself as I setup a dozen layers of spikes in its face and dragon tail it out of my face
I was waiting for the mugulus cobblemon datapack lol
I very much agree with your take on terastilization, and I'm hoping it gets banned soon. I don't think the addition of the national pokedex (whenever that's coming, if it's coming at all) will fix the problems it introduces, and I think it's ultimately responsible for a great number of the quick bans we've seen so far, as we as some of the formerly-OU pokemon falling to UU, since good typing matters much less if you can just fix another pokemon's typing to mono-water or mono-fairy, then sweep.
As for what I'd like to see next, I'd be very interested in you analyzing one of the lower tiers, like UU, RU, or even NU. I find that tiers below OU tend to have a lot of really fun and unexpected teams, and the variety of pokemon tends to be significantly higher, so matches are much less formulaic than you sometimes get in higher tiers. I'm curious who the top threats are in those tiers this time around.
I have been subscribed for a long time and liking videos constantly and Iron Mugulis is still a huge threat. I don’t think Jimothy Cool has the answer!
I believe in Annihilape´s supremacy
as a 36 year old pokemon player ahs played pokemon since red and blue and has always found primepape to be my favorite pokemon. i have used it in every game it was available. constantly hearing how bad it was while i made great use of it. i have quite a few videos of pokemon showdown battles in which i use primeape in OU. hell i even took it into ubers during gen 4 because of darkrai would abuse dark void. primeapes vital spirit would take everyone by surprise and darkrai was fragile enough to die in one hit. seeing all of these videos of how good its evolvion is...i honestly dont know what i feel. its sureal.
We live in a timeline where Primeape gets so angry that it dies and becomes an OP raging menace to OU society.
This youtube channel is so cool...Like your nickname ;) . And totally agree with you about the tera: refreshing at the beginning of the generation but continue to be a bit problematic for the health of the meta.
I think giving a pokemon with this much bulk and attack drain punch, taunt and also a move that after being hit once gets the same base power as earthquake was inspired.
So glad I used Annihilape on my in-game team
In the recent PokeBall and great ball competitions I've had great success with my Annihilape team. Max HP and def with an assault Vest, rage fist, drain punch, ice punch and steel tera blast. I use it alongside a beat up Mausehold with friend guard, amoongus with pollen puff and a medicham with skill swap to give it pure power

Primeape got so mad it died...then told Death to piss off.
I'm kind of bummed out by the fact that Game Freak showed us they can implement a really cool mechanic, like keeping track of how many individual times a mon gets hit in a battle, then proceeded to throw it on a move that becomes good after even just one hit, and outright broken after 2+ hits, capping out at 6 hits.
If Rage Fist increased by 20 bp per hit, until a bp cap of 170, then it would have been a lot cleaner. Kind of bad before being hit once, decent after being hit once or twice, then good after being hit three times or more. And once you get into the dangerous territories of over 150, it stops building up.

Just a question from someone who doesnt play but watches a lot, i have a doubt about tera: if you are toxic or burned and then tera to poison or fire type, will you still take the damage and have the effect? Will you be cured? Will still be status but without the negative efffects?
The effects remain the same
I always wondered why Annihilape was banned instead of rage Fist by itself. Same goes for houndstone, why not banning last respects instead?
The reason is because banning moves is a total last resort. Rage Fist and Last Respects are overpowered but are only learned by one Pokemon each. They don't want to start a slippery slope of "Oh if you ban Geomancy Xerneas might be ok for OU" discussions.
Primeape has rage fist and is nowhere broken. It's broken on annilhilape.
