Yes, Roland was more wise in his demeanor and choice of words. Roland always was the more talented one anyway. The backbone behind Tears for Fears. Elemental is proof of that.
You know Curt Smith almost had no involvement in the making of the first 2 albums. He was said to show up once in awhile and had his part. But it was very minor. ❤ so I don't really give him to much credit. Roland, Ian Stanley and Chris Hughes were the force behind the first 2 albums.
roland was speechless in the last seconds...probably can't believe how straightforward and candid curt can get...if he can only zip curt's mouth here...hahaha! oh...i love these guys so much...
i don’t think that’s why he was speechless. roland is always candid and blunt too in interviews. i think he was annoyed because curt kept interrupting him and talking over him.
i don’t really get why people are still acting like they behave this way. like give roland and curt a break. they were both around their mid 20’s during this interview.

Certainly have the arrogance of young men, but at the same time, mature insights. Great guys.
Right! It has been about a month since I started listening to them ( I mean putting aside Everybody wants to rule the world and Shout, because who doesn't know those two songs?) And at the begging i thought there was only one singer ( Roland ) then I realized it was Curt who sang Ewtrtw and he basically sings most of the songs from the hurting too! I have an unpopular opinion, but for me their voices were completely different from each other at the early albums and I can easily say who's singing. But nowadays they really sound alike
I think Curt's comments were a little out there but a) he was 24 with his first taste of fame and b) the American rock scene at the time did suck. I think they can both be pretentious when they want to; it certainly comes out in Roland in the later interviews but no one's immune to it especially two guys who are constantly being asked their opinions on things. Nowadays, though, he loves America, and this was taken 30 years ago. I seriously doubt he'd say anything similar today.
Curt was certainly a candid little thing, wasn't he? I was ROFLing, not only at what he was saying (and he was right, let's face it) but at the look on poor Roland's face as he was saying it. This is comedy GOLD (replacing comment removed by mistake - shaking fist at YT)

As someone who has followed the band for many years, tff's history as you have painted it is a bit skewed. 1) They knew each other since the we're 12 years old. They came from similar backgrounds, as they were both raised by single mothers. Socially, the we're very close, more like "brothers than best friends" as Roland once put it. They even engaged in primal scream therapy as teenagers together to help deal with their tough upbringing. When they came into their 20's, and married their sweethearts, respectively, they still lived within close proximity of each other. It's a large part of the reason he left the band and ran away to NYC, before settling down in L.A. The constant touring and traveling was something Curt credited as leading to the failure of his first marriage. 3) Believe it or not, Roland and Curt were both pretty spiritual, more so now as they have gotten older. 4) Along with repairing their musical relationship, it appears, by all accounts, that they have repaired their friendship too. What makes this band great is their unique composition and use of instruments. To me that makes them exponentially better than the majority of the American bands in the 80s, especially the ones that they mentioned. So, yeah Curt's comments were a little arrogant, but he makes a great point about the problems with American music (which is ESPECIALLY bad this decade). Tears for Fears is considered one of the British groups in classic rock, Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal interviewed on No Limits in 1985. Smith just likes to sing "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" from their second album Songs from the Big Chair.

I think that if he was referring to the American-rock music / pop-mainstream, then yes back in 85' it was pretty much regurgitated 70's classic rock. Though inspite of this, American music is still responsible for everything that British artists has brought back to the States, merely improving upon the sound. In 85', Michael Jackson was huge. The punk rock scene in New York City was huge, both scenes were dynamic, new, and exciting. Curtis is a prude who listens to the radio all day.
CelesteK I agree. Where there's great talent, there's always going to be issues. Sadly, these issues rob the rest of us from whatever great messages they might have had to give.
Hey, I don't like certain places in America either. That's life. Having spent 2 years living in Germany in 84 and 85, I can tell you that coming from europe to america would be a HUGE difference. Over in europe, they were busy wondering if two other countries were going to stage their after school fight on european soil and ruin the whole place. It's a different mindset. I think the last generation that was truly HONEST about America's place in the world was the youth of the 60's.
I read somewhere that they were friends since middle school..but things started going south when Curt was kicked to the curb so to speak, leaving him with nothing to contribute since the producer had Roland be in charge of almost everything and Curt felt left out....I think thats when things started to go bad and it effected their relationship....I think they are slowly building their friendship to where it used to be...
@TearsforFearsGirl I don't think it was so much that Curt was being an ass so much as it was that he just had to get his point across. I think that to him getting his point across, that the American music scene is boring, :) I think he's got a very valid point. :)
I disagree, I wouldn't read into the "body language" too much here, I doubt they disagreed with eachother anyway. And isn't that the voice of Jonathan King I can hear interviewing them?
I lot of Americans are honest about where they live. I don't see anything wrong with being honest. You have to take the good with the bad and acknowledge both.
mastmedia Mr. Rogers sang.."Sometimes people are good, and they do just like they should, but the very same people who are good sometimes, are the very same people who are bad sometimes. Funny, but it's true, it's the same isn't for me, isn't it the same for you...." A great song.
Yes- you could definitely see it... Over in europe, they were busy wondering if two other countries were going to stage their after school fight on european soil and ruin the whole place. It's a different mindset. I think the last generation that was truly HONEST about America's place in the world was the youth of the 60's.
That's true. :) I don't know if Curt would dare speak ill about the place where he lives and works and where his children were born. :)
Brasil l need. 💖
good interview
Did these two guys even like each other
I read somewhere that they were friends since middle school..but things started going south when Curt was kicked to the curb so to speak, leaving him with nothing to contribute since the producer had Roland be in charge of almost everything and Curt felt left out....I think thats when things started to go bad and it effected their relationship....I think they are slowly building their friendship to where it used to be...
Things started to go south between them when Roland started singing (at the request of the label). Saw this in another interview.
Curt made this duo break. Always the weird one.
@TearsforFearsGirl I don't think it was so much that Curt was being an ass so much as it was that he just had to get his point across. I think that to him getting his point across, that the American music scene is boring, :) I think he's got a very valid point. :)
Would you please please make this available for view for phones?
Nice package on Curt but he does hog the moment, negatively. They broke up and didn't speak for nearly a decade. Shocker there...
i thought there were yanks at that time. I only opened my eyes after hearing The beatles that most cool music came from the UK ever since
Roland seemed very annoyed by Curt in this interview lmao
Bob and Jeff interview
I like the way they say "which is completely alcohol free" together. :)
This made me sad
I disagree, I wouldn't read into the "body language" too much here, I doubt they disagreed with eachother anyway.
And isn't that the voice of Jonathan King I can hear interviewing them?
Only Americans having a cry about Curt being honest! 🙄😂😂😂
Yes that's true. :)
Dreamy, isn't it? During live performances, he sings with an accent.
You and me both; I always see a better way to word it just after I hit "post," no matter how many times I edited beforehand :D
But he wasn't a US citizen when this interview was conducted. :)
Oh the irony, lol.
I was actually thinking that to myself as I watched this video a while ago, haha.
Yes- you could definitely see it... I don't think it was the fact that he had an opinion :P just what it WAS... especially while they were doing an interview which is sort of a type of promo.. while I love Tears for Fears (and Roland!!! :P ) I don't know if they would have been as big as they were without having cracked the American market/music scene... but maybe they could.. because they're so massively TALENTEDDDDDDDDDDD!! :D :D
Ahh well :D :D
Always thought Roland looked like Jon Cryer. Is it me?
Jon Cryer and Jerry Seinfeld love child! lol
yes!
More like Michael Hutchence from INXS to me...idk
And looks like Dave Weckl
it's the teeth
Yeah, I got that vibe too. He looked a bit annoyed.
